I ride English, but I would also recommend one should also check all the leather to make sure it's strong, especially at the places where it meets/is in contact with metal. I fell off a horse a few months ago because the crappy place I was riding at wasn't checking the tack, and the stirrup leather was totally worn out at the stirrup bar where it met the saddle, and it snapped off in the middle of a canter in the arena and I fell off.
