    Olmo has not played more than 20 League games for the past 3 Seasons. While he is a magnificent footballer his injury issues make it absolutely reasonable to not pay the release clause also according to multiple german sources the release clause has expired on the 20th of July. And Leipzig are still willing to sell him for 60m anyways. So I don't fault Barcelona for negotiating but that first offer was absolutely laughable.

    The problem with release clauses is, unless you can come to an agreement with the players current club, you have to pay all that clause up front. I'd wager that 90%+ of all transfers in recent years have deferred payments. Typical transfers like you referring to Antony to United for 85m will more than likely have a payment plan of say 20mil for 2 years, 15mil for next 3 years for the duration of the contract the player (Antony) signs for with his new club (United), 5 years contract. So Barcelona may have a budget of 60mil that theoretically they can go and pay the 60mil release clause on Olmo, they may have in fact still be owing on previous years transfers reducing what they can pay this year for new transfers, meaning they dont actually have 60mil to spend right now. So they would need to come to an agreement with Leipzig to defer payments on the release clause for 2 to 3 years (or longer). A good example of this is what United did with Zirkzee, they ended up paying Bologna an extra 3to4mil on Zirkzee's release clause of 38mil to defer payments to the next 3 years.

    As a Barca Fan (watching most games), I think spending 60Mio on Olmo is not the right call. He is worldclass and I love to watch his highlights since his Dinamo days (respect that move a lot from him) but he is not what Barcelona desperately need. If the club were in a financially better spot, sure I would take him in a heartbeat, but under current circumstances, the need for a touchline left-winger (Nico Williams) is just way bigger in my opinion.
    Olmo likes the halfspaces in the center more, which could work under Fickl's direct system (wingers not glued to touchline). Nonetheless, Barca has huge amounts of talent in that area (Pedri who I think will be the 10 in a 4231, Pablo Torre, Guille Fernández, Noah Darvich even Gündogan can play there...) and are in need of speed in transition. Im going nuts when I see roumers that the club is going for BOTH (Nico and Olmo) because they have more urgent needs and are NOT in the position to spend 120Mio + Wages + signingbonus on them.
    I would prefer them going for a 6 in their prime, that can play the double/lone pivot like Zubamendi (my dream but not happening...) or Merino (probably going to arsenal because Barca have wrong priorities...), Nico (lack of left wingers, still believe in ansu but injuries...) and maybe extend Cancelo's loan somehow thats it. La Masia is so promising! I've been anticipating the emerging defensive midfield talents (Bernal, Casado, before them Nico) ever since Busquets left and thats just the tip of the iceberg.
    Rumors suggest that Flick doesn't see the need for a 6 (canceled free transfer of Guido Rodríguez) but I still believe that a more defensive-minded and experienced presence in that area would benefit Barca more then Olmo (in case Nico Williams comes).
    Thanks for the daily content btw love hearing you talk about the game. Keep it up!

  • @MatanelCation
    @MatanelCation Před měsícem +5

    Not between every correlation there's a causation.
    When a player have a release clause, the buying club need to pay the full amount of the release clause in front, which I'd very problematic for a lot of teams because they don't have the necessary cash flow (Barca for example), and it the club that have the player don't want to release it, the club that want to buy have the option to pay or not and nothing in between.
    In addition, Olmo is on 170k per week, this is a very high salary for most clubs, he have no problem staying in RB and they are willing to increase his salary, so every club that want him need to face issues unless they already have a big space in their wage budget and their transfer budget according to their FFP and FFP became the name of the game for every club in Europe.
    Besides Olmo, most of the other cases that you mentioned like Antony and Enzo for example came from totally different things, Enzo was a release clause and Ted was nuts that he was willing to pay it, Antony was a very bad transfer management that lasted a month in a half and eventually Man united were willing to pay because they just did had any other option and it was the last days of transfer window.
    No club in the world would buy a player for 120M for so called "sell value" because there is non in buying such a player with that amount these days unless he would literally become the best in the world and some Saudi club will be willing to pay up front gigantic amount and that's a stretch.
    Just see as an example Neves from Benfica, 120M release clause, Benfica at the beginning insisted that they will release only for the release clause, couple of days ago the the director of Benfica said in an interview that they will review offers for a much lower amount, because today no club will be willing to risk up front 120M for a "wonderkid" without a real movement in their wage and transfer budget, and this is why PSG is rumor in buying for 60M because that's the cash flow they have and most clubs prefer to get money up front than installments.
    Long story short, Dani Olmo is just expensive and clubs that can afford him, or don't need him or prefer better players than him in a deal that will be more beneficial for them financially because they might be able to spread it.
    As you said, life is not FM, but because we play so much FM we believe that stuff we do in the game imitate real football business, it's not, in FM you can "just pay" 60M release clause because you already lined up 10 players that came for loan that you are going to sale to get another 300M to you budget, that doesn't work in real life and as I said, FFP is the name of the game these days, that's what ruin transfers like this.
    Beside the above, yes, he is a great player, but he is very fragile, i think Neymar had more official games than him in the last couple of years and it says a lot.
    Love your content.

    i can see olmo being overlooked by barca just because hes not the full on pacey winger nico williams is, having nico as the opposote winger to yamal works so well because they both stretch the other team's line so wide that a poacher type of player like olmo can shine, olmo might have difficulties playing different roles or trying to score when there isn't that much space to begin with, similar to lewadowski's situation.

    Just to clarify this particular situation, Barca are trying to bring in both Nico Williams and Olmo. Not Olmo as an alternative signing. • @jasonnchuleft894
    @jasonnchuleft894 Před měsícem +1

    Well there are 2 strong arguments against players 25 and older:
    1. Typically it takes a player at least a full season to fully integrate into a new team and system. So by the time they can potentially play at their best they're already 26, then it takes another full season of them playing at their best to significantly raise their value. But the older a player gets the lower their value ceiling drops. So it's very likely their value will end up stagnating at the club that signed them instead.
    2. Nowadays players tend to be overplayed in their formative years. So by the time they reach 25+ they've either already had quiet a track record of injuries or they're expected to develop problems in the near future. So why take the gamble when you can just buy a young player and overplay them instead? Then all you need to worry about is not missing the window to sell them before their body eventually shuts down.

Willing to splurge for someone who would be your undisputed 1st choice for his position who is only 22 like Nico Williams makes sense; doing the same for a 4 year older Olmo who would face much stiffer competition for his spot, given the Club's finances, makes much less sense.

    We came into this summer knowing we needed a LW and a DM both of now seem to not be happening anymore. As the DM may be coming from La Masia. There has been no progress for the LW. So signing a Mid seems unnecessary.

But Tebas knows that without any good players at Barça, his Liga would be a complete joke competition / one club show. They will always let Barça do whatever they want, however this time they are too broke to even sign 2nd tier talents. Leipzig and Athletic Club are not dumb, they want the money upfront before selling any players to Barça.

      @@RaulEdu33 Nope? First of all last Summer Barcelona spent almost no money. 2nd of all they are back to 1:1 rule or at least close to it, the finances keep getting better and it has nothing to do with that lever. Also, the reason they still passed ffp despite the money not coming through yet (it's still apparently happening) was because Laporta and the board gave up some of their own money to pass ffp and still be able to spend. I'm not saying there isn't some weird stuff going on but it's really not as crazy as some people make it out to be. The new nike deal is going to give us even more money. We are making wage cuts and have scaled back a tonne on wages too.

Maybe clubs are not scouting players only based on international competitions, some players do really well in a tournament but flop domestically. They probably look at both domestic & international form.

    You don't get the point: players are financial assets in the balance sheet. You can keep them at least at purchase value as long as it's not proven differently. The younger the players the longer you can keep them. It's like a building: a newer building has higher value than an older building. It has nothing to do with football capabilities and not even with free market: it's just an accounting trick. This is why american sports are so much smarter: a nfl player is not an asset, its value is only measured in draft picks, you can't put him in a trial balance

    Barcelona advanced midfielder/mco options RN:Pedri, Gundogan,Fermin Lopez,Pablo Torre.

One of them is playing well in the CL Semis right now, and one of them MIGHT be better than that if everything works out and the scouting report is exactly right and he doesn't get hurt etc etc etc. Just one example, Olmo is another one. Clubs should transition to buying ready made 24-26 year old players who are somehow cheaper than wonderkids. Conor Gallagher another example; the man is very good and Chelsea need to sell him for PSR reasons. Lots of examples.

    It’s funny because in fm I don’t just go for the young players. Depending on what doing but if I’m a club like Barcelona (I like to play Milan) I’m buying players who will win me a title now, not in 5 years. And if I sign a 26 year old for 50m and win the title with that player as a pivotal role then he’ll probably resell. Or I’ll just keep him and build around him for next season when I sign another player ready to win a title. I often take 30+ year olds on free transfer if they’re going to play a solid role in my team. I don’t care about the resale value at that point. I’m looking for titles. It’s important not to overspend. Spend wisely. But when you’re at that level of the game, it’s not necessarily good to buy for the future, especially with high transfer values. If anything try to buy young players who are undervalued just in case they don’t turn out well. That just seems like common sense. Especially since if all big clubs aren’t looking to buy a 25+ year old. If you sign a 21 year old for 50m you’ll likely not get 50m when they’re 25. It seems too simple for big clubs to be making this mistake

He can come in and be amazing immediately and can give us a solid few years. This is better than signing Duran who while he is 21, he is not proven. He barely scored with Villa last season.

    So you criticize Barca for their overspending and urging them to think about their financial situation. But when they focus on a long-term investment over a medium-term one, that's also bad?
    I think a big club completely sitting out a transfer window would be a death knell. Instead they want to be smart and think about the rebuild. They will have a couple of low-spending years in which they want to at least finish second, but probably want to be back in the mix in 3-4 years. So getting players that are not too expensive, good enough at the moment and a brilliant fit 4 years from now when it's all supposed to come together, seems pretty smart.
