Wolfey mentions 0 Atk to lessen confusion damage, but doesn’t talk about 0 Spe for his much-loved team style of Trick Room.
Being able to put ivs to 0 (mostly for speed cause confusion isn't as scary as it once was) would mean I can make more use out my shiny pokemon like torkoal cause trying to get 0 ivs on shiny mons is painful
0 attack is also great for weakening foul play users

James from Team Rocket must be an expert in manipulating IV (since he has a huge collection of bottle caps)
That was probably the joke with the in-game item.
That was what I was thinking
Except the fact that he got rid of them to help Meowth convince a tribe of people that he knew Pay Day

Another reason to want 0 attack IV on a pokemon is if it's a special attacker, that means less attack will make foul play do less damage
Well, you wouldn’t run 0 Atk IVs on physical attacker anyway. The trade off of -15 base stats for a niche interaction like confusion or foul play isn’t worth it.
It’s like running 0 Spe IVs on a fast pokemon just in case the opponent has trick room

james has been forshadowing this for 25 years holy shit
I always thought that for the rusty bottle cap, the hyper trainer is offended that you give him a bottle cap that is in bad condition. So he lowers your stats instead of raising them
I'm still begging for a defense version of an Assault Vest or an item that lowers the power of supereffective moves by 10%.
That item + Body Press + a pokemon like Obstagoon who learns Iron Defense or Chesnaught which gets STAB would be an insane combo.
EDIT: Yeah, I know now, Iron Defense wouldn't be usable on an Assault Vest equivalent
Sameeeeee
I second this motion
@@anothergamer112 assault vest makes it so that you can only pick attacking moves so if it was just a defensive version of that you’d never be able to click iron defense. Otherwise I agree it would be broken.

Would also be useful for lowering speed in trick room
For people who don't understand why a Pokémon having no IVs in certain stats is good, having 0 IVs in Speed makes you faster in Trick Room and having 0 IVs in Attack makes you take less damage from Foul Play and confussion.
What is Trick Room? I don't understand a lot about pokemon. I apologize
@@BCS86 It makes slower pokemon move first instead of last
trick room is a move that reverses the speed tiers
eg, a 100 speed pokemon usually outspeeds a 50 speed pokemon but when trick room is used the 50 speed pokemon moves first
despite this priority moves work normally
the 100 speed pokemon will still hit first if it uses quick attack
@@BCS86 A move that changes the battlefield for 5 turns and essentially inverts speed, making the slowest Pokémon attack first and the fastest last.
Appreciate all the responses. Thank you! 🙏
There are other reasons too on why you want 0 IV Physical Attack stat:
1. Less damage from foul play
2. You give less recovery to the opponent using strength sap which works on physical attack stat.
3. Lesser speed IV means you would be faster in trick room(but you would be slower normally) So it is only useful if you plan to use trick room movesets.
Imagine giving your Pokémon tetanus to make your special attackers more competitively viable.
I really like this idea, because you can already change their abilities with the ability patch and natures with the mints, so why not change IVs?
It's also super important for trick room teams, as the lower the speed the faster they are in trick room
Another example of pokemon not wanting max ivs is Latios with life orb trying to have 299 hp instead of 301 to minimize recoil damage
This little item will fix the problem of hacked mons
I have NEVER understood IVs, and you explained this so well! Thank you so much! 👏💖
You never tried to learn it*, because they are as simple as Wolfey explained here, they are just a hidden number in each stat that increases it, nothing less and nothing more.
@@gicrueldad9520It’s not even explained in a lot of the main line Pokémon games and it’s a hidden number I didn’t know about IV’s EV’s for years and it’s very trivial and dumb makes competitive Pokémon a full time job no thanks
This is different to the berries that reduce your EVs
this is why james loved collecting bottle caps
What if instead bottle caps let you pick your Pokémon’s IV in one stat not maxing it necessarily since certain strategies involve stats of not 0 or 31, for example stakataka could have a defense stat just low enough so that when it beast boosts instead of boosting its defense stat it increases its attack stat since that would be its highest stat
I feel like the rusty bottle cap just makes them weaker from tetanus

When using the rusty bottle cap, your Pokemon cuts itself and contracts tetanus.
I wish there was an item that could reset your evs so you can make your playthrough team competitively good
There are berries that can do that, though I believe it would take a lot of them
Pomeg berries reduce hp evs don't they?
Maybe in the Dlc. In Galar's Dlc they added an npc that resets all the Pokemon's ivs.

I just had a thought. Calm mind should remove confusion

I always loved that combination of ability and move. Can't wait to catch a Snivy and give it an Ability Patch!
A few other reasons to why 0 IVs is important for those who aren't very familiar with competitive pokemon:
-If you're using a pokemon with high spatk and atk stat and you just wanna focus on spatk, having 0 IVs on atk could reduce foul play damage.
-Having 0 IVs on speed helps you with trick room and gyro ball
-Power split is more effective when using a defensive mon
-Strength sap heals less
Team Rocket James definitely got that max IV team on deck
A more useful example is a trick room slowking or something
James has been really quiet after this video
you are such a CZcams, keep up the good work
And a quicker way to lose EVs as well would be nice. Then just taking ages finding the berries you need
There was an NPC in Isle of Armor who would remove all EVs on a Pokemon. Hopefully, this NPC will exist again in the DLC for SV.
@bml37733 I didn't know that. There was a npc that could do that
Game Freak: "Well, since you specifically asked for it… no. Never. You jinxed it."
-Mega Evolution- Cancer: **laughs in Z-A announcement**
If i recall, special attack also effects the self damage from confusion. When my Pokemon got hit by both swagger and flatter in past versions the self damage would skyrocket rapidly compared to being hit by only one of those moves
A better example would be Speed IVs for Trickroom Teams. You want to be slow as possible on the Pokemon that are going to benefit from Trickroom.
They're both fine examples. Slightly more common, sure, but not better.
Ah yes. Now we have the restart mochi. We finally got what we wanted
That isnt what we wanted though.
The mochi resets EVs, not IVs.
You were already able to reduce EVs back in gen 3 with berries
I could get behind this, min-maxing your pokemon even more to get better performance
I feel it may be worth mentioning that James from the Pokémon anime collects bottle caps. That could explain a few things.
I don’t just want one to put my IVs to 0, but a way to get the IVs to a specific number chosen by me. Not just the extremes.
World Champ Lunala a couple years ago ran a specific number of IVs (18 I think) to be faster than some mons under Tailwind, but also slower than other specific threats to outspeed them under Trick Room.
Pkhex be like: "Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our powers."
Hacked Pokemon are generally illegal for competitive play. So no! That doesn't count.
@@reubentherblazer9756Yeah, but… (pullsss out the hacked Ditto) You can’t traccce a pokemon’sss family lineage.
I would suggest keeping silver bottle caps, but you get to chose, which IV the chosen stat will have instead of just maximising IV
Yeah getting specific IVs via caps would be good if you need like exactly 1 or so
Back in UltraSun and UtlraMoon, there was a rather odd situation where Stakataka needed 15 IVs in Def to get an Attack Boost from Beast Boost. I think we should have control over how the stats are allocated via Hyper Training... maybe a Platinum Bottle Cap that would allow us to do that. Plus there are some spreads that call for 29 IVs in HP.
The way that my 0 speed Ditto is now more valuable than any 6 iv ditto
No wonder James from team rocket collected these 😂😂
last I checked minimizing foul play damage is more relevant than confusion damage, but there's also 0 speed for trick room, and the occasional beast boost/protosynthesis manipulation, though those want to be able to pick specific values instead of max or zero
0 atk ivs were also useful back when Foul Play was a very frequently used move.
Yes everyone this works with speed and trick room too lol we all know this that’s why Wolfe doesn’t need to say it
Fun fact: Having 0 Attack IVs also helps by slightly decreasing the damage you take from Foul Play.
A Rusty Bottle Cap would be perfect for Pokémon with zero IVs and whatever state that you don’t want, which needs to be a thing for next generation so that way you don’t have to just keep hatching the same Pokémon over and over until you get to no good stat and that whatever that you would like.
Confusion and Foul Play are why any pokemon that doesn’t use physical damage well should be going 0 attack ivs when possible. At this point, we need Fair Play, a move that goes off of Sp Attack power, and be a either a Psychic or Fighting type move, because Play Rough and Foul Play are Fairy and Dark respectively.
Honestly, my memory of pre-bottlecap breeding tricks has definitely helped me in these recent competitive needs. I keep 0 attack or speed IV breeding partners of various egg groups to pass it on, and it gets it done quicker.
My gimmighoul took ages to set up though since it wasn't breedable, I just had to settle for any encounter that had 0 attack and correct all 5 other stats myself.
They could call it a rusty bottle cap
0 atk/spatk to attack your own pokes in doubles or 0speed for trick room or other shinenigans is one of the reasons why I love competitive Pokemon, because it's so counter intuitive for ppl who don't understand the game
If the rusty bottle cap reduced IV's by 1 that would be huge too for those hidden power 30 IV's
This item can also help a Pokemon get certain type of hidden power
I love trick room and clearly so does game freak!
We got that in the form of the Reset Mochi introduced in The Teal Mask, and it's a god send!
No, no we didnt.
The mochi resets EVs, not IVs
You were already to reduce/reset EVs back in gen 3 with berries, the mochi just made it less grindy
The Golden Bottlecap could jut b reworked to allow you 6o pick the IV stat you want.
This allows you to add something new to yhe game without needing to add another item
I didn't actually know that was how IVs worked. They matter far less than I thought. It's still very helpful to have high ones but as long as they are closer to 31 than 0, it doesn't matter too much for standard play
Imagine the hyper training guy receives a rusty bottle cap and makes a passive aggressive remark before “hyper training” the pokemon
Pokemons with prankster and trick:😏
As a Fallout fan I can say I am fully loaded with bottle caps
This would truly boost Trick Room teams
And that would definitely make my trick room strategy even easier to do instead of breeding using a ditto with a zero in Speed.
I've been thinking about this idea for some time now. Just call it a rusty bottle cap and we're golden
A ROM hack I played actually had an item called the iron pill that let you reduce a pokemon's speed IV to 0 when all IVs in it were normally maxed to allow trick room teams to be better in it.
in the old days of breeding we always like to say “6x31 or release”
All we need is a “Rusted Bottle Cap”, that when given to the hyper training guy, “accidentally” lowers that stat to 0 instead of maxing it
Bro is evil for not arranging the stats with S.Atk next to S.Def
Aegislash is another good example. I have a brave aegislash with low speed ivs and high attack ivs. I almost used a golden bottle cap on it before realizing I want it to move after my opponents so it takes hits in the defense form and attacks after.
I know it has low ivs, but I struggle with calculators so I don't know it's exact value. Would be nice to drop it to 0 though just to make sure.
Mentions attack for confusion instead of my all time favorite attacking method of curse and gyro ball, possibly making my + sp def - speed ferrothorn that even more bit powerful
I think we should also consider lower HP IVs for the sake of rounding down Life Orb damage. As well as defense and special defense for focus sash strats that need the sash to go off. Lower Speed IVs is very important in weather wars and certain moves like roost where the flying typing is important to keep to stay defensive
How'd that work for Life Orb?
@@Prince_Eva_Huepow life orb damage is rounded down, so assuming you wanted to keep blasting with life orb damage you'd have 1 more hit since you can manipulate your HP value to be just at the correct amount to pull 11 hits off instead of 10
@@comfybed2543that sounds like it only works if you don't get hit once in 10 turns.
@@lazyryan3766 Of course, but that statement applies to a lot of things. Like running assault vest is assuming you are only going against special attacks or running focus sash is assuming your HP is gonna be deleted by the opponent with a single attack
@@comfybed2543 Edit: I made the assumption you were suggesting 0 hp IVs. 129 hp as apposed to 131 would make the life orb take 12 damage as opposed to 13. I see the point of not wanting max hp ivs.
Giving up 31 points of hp so you can attack 11 turns instead of 10 sounds more situational, especially as there's only 6 Pokémon to potentially 1-shot. It assumes opposing Pokémon want to set up instead of attacking for several turns. A quick attack from a weak Pokémon could remove several turns from a life orb build, certainly that 11th turn. But I don't get into competitive Pokémon, so what do I know?
"Every pokemon has 6 ivs"
Well the ones I seem to find usually do
0 speed IVs for more damage on gyro ball and slower teleports on slowbro and slowking too
Dude, you totally explained IVs to me in one minute. I’ve been wondering for years lol
I thought of foul play but confusion actually makes sense
Ya I feel like people have asking for an IV lowering or zeroing out item since Black and White and especially since Sun and Moon when they introduced the Bottle Cap.
Give me one of those rusty bottle caps and I'll start running Trick Room like nobodies business
The trolling potential with this is insane
I thought he meant, like...
A debuff held item.
Imagine Prankster Trick and suddenly the enemy gets an Omni-debuff
They should call the item that makes a pokemon weaker “Bottleneck” instead of bottlecap
You don’t even need a new item. Just some kind of NPC with a quirky backstory that does the opposite effect of maxing out stats that also accepts bottle caps.
I didn't hear the beginning so I thought rusty bottle cap actually exists🙈😂
I thought he was talking about for a trick room among us *cough* sorry amoongus
I think I counterfeit bottle cap would work better because the hyper training guy would get mad and set the iv to zero
The rafkonians probably start new tech city tbh
While the rusty bottle cap would be cool, I’d prefer a small change to the existing bottle cap that just lets you pick the value of the Pokémon’s IVs, rather than automatically maxing them out.
There would be almost no situations where you’d pick any number other than 31 or 0, but I’m sure there are some fringe cases I’m not aware of that would be cool.
Back in x/y, I tried desperately to get a perfect aegislash with 0 speed. Never got it.
It’s called a hammer 😂 or if you want to keep the theme make it a broken bottle 😂
Every bottle cap gansta untill the golden cap comes in.
I didn't care about Foul play damage until Wolf made me terrified of it.
Assumed this was gonna be clickbait with that title but no, it's spot on
speed also is very important if u run trick room or just a slow Mon that needs to go last to be effective (like a tanky mon using volt switch/uturn/parting shot/baton pass)but can't afford to use lagging tail(I think there's a 2nd item that does the same thing but can't remember the name). also HP is important if u wanna maximize the effects of something like FEAR or Pain Split/Leech Seed
Trick room and foul play immediately came to mind
