- ⚖️ Do you need a great lawyer? I can help! legaleagle.link/eagleteam ⚖️
I get asked a lot about whether being a practicing attorney is like being a lawyer on TV. Like most people, I love watching legal movies and courtroom dramas. It's one of the reasons I decided to become a lawyer. But sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out because they are ridiculous.
Today I'm taking a break from teaching law students how to kick ass in law school. This one is just for fun.
In this video I tackle some of the most famous courtroom scenes in Hollywood history including A Few Good Men, 12 Angry Men, The Dark Knight, and Erin Brockovich. Great dramas, but BAD lawyering. They are preposterous, but I still love watching them.

Custom Suits: legaleagle.link/indochino

Tie Clips/Bars: amzn.to/2WIQ6EE
Pocket Squares: amzn.to/2UfsKtL
▶ Why Indochino Suits? (50% off Premium Suits + free shipping) [legaleagle.link/indochino]: Off-the-rack suits NEVER fit right. Indochino makes fully custom suits that fit perfectly using any material I want, with all of the options I want. And they cost 1/3rd of what normal suits costs. I’ve purchased them with my own money for years, so I’m thrilled they are now a sponsor.
▶ Why Ties from TheTieBar? (Free shipping on orders over $50) [fave.co/2ImLY9I]: Normal ties are too fat. Skinny ties are too skinny. So these days I only wear ties that are exactly 2.5” wide. They are fashionable without being hipster. You see them in all of my videos. TieBar ties are perfect, come in every color I want, and never cost more than $19.
▶ Why these Tie Clips? [amzn.to/2WIQ6EE]: It’s really hard to find affordable tie clips that are the right size (1.5”), look good, and are great quality. These tie bars are all three. Plus the 3-pack gives a variety of styles. They pair perfectly with 2.5” ties from TheTieBar (above).
▶ Why these Pocket Squares? [amzn.to/2UfsKtL]: I like my pocket squares perfectly, well, square. Like straight-out-of-Mad-Men square. The only way to do that is with a stiffer material that keeps its shape. I’ve exhaustively tried dozens of pocket squares, and these are by far the best. It’s how I get the perfectly flat pocket square you see in my videos.

Review Drop Dead Diva!!! :D
i'd like to see ya review some episodes of the TV series "Bull" if ya don't mind?
I'd love to see your opinions on the movie From the Hip.
you should tacke the "Exorcism of Emily Rose". one of the most interesting law dramas i've seen
One correction. It was Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men. Henry was the father of Jane and Peter Fonda.
I was in a production of "12 Angry Men". Sadly, the production budget would only allow for 6 jurors. So we had to be twice as angry.
6 REALLY angry men
6 irate chaps
Thankfully my play had 12 ppl. It was really fun tho
Thank you so much for taking part of making an amazing movie. Still one of the movies that help spark interest in law for me
And since the jury was divided among 3 genders, the 2 remaining men had to be a total of 6x times as angry.
Not allowed to yell in court..... Well there goes every law movie ever
except To Kill a Mockingbird
Getting to yell in court was the whole reason I applied to law school. There goes that career...
@@heartandtroll9993 you could hypothetically yell during a closing argument. If you notice, he said something like "you won't see yelling LIKE THAT in court".
Edit: capitalization for emphasis
If you can’t stand up in the middle of the court room, point your finger straight at the prosecution and yell “OBJECTION!” Then really what’s the point of being a lawyer?
@@DavidHackGomez95 you don't have to use caps for emphasis, just put asterisks on either side of the emphatic phrase to make it *bold.*
My favorite thing about 12 angry Men is that, no matter whether or not it's legally sound or whatever, it managed to create an incredibly compelling drama that had me glued to the edge of my seat for like an hour and half, with nothing but 12 guys in a room having a debate. Excellent writing and cinematography and acting
...and that also leads to a lower production budget!
Six Angry Guys
I like the characters to. How even the most stubborn people can eventually be convinced. Like the juror who has the octagonal glasses, I remember winston saying "What can you do against the lunatic who is smarter than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and persists in his lunacy", all you can do is keep giving them, and hope he listens, which luckily he did.
"The evidence is circumstantial" is to lawyers what "Yeah, but that's just a theory" is to scientists.
Yeah, but that's just a theory...
A GAME THEORY. Thanks for commenting!
Except that it wouldn't even be a theory, just a hypothesis.
@@shinigamimiroku3723 He's saying that circumstantial evidence is like a scientific theory, in that both are downplayed while they're actually quite strong.
A hypothesis doesn't mean anything by itself, only with testing (in other words, evidence), does it become stronger, until eventually it becomes a theory.
AWESOME BLUE GENERAL I was finna say a FILM THEORY… but that works too ig
no not really. In the science world a theory is the highest level of confirmation you can give. When something is a theory it has been given large amounts of substantial evidence to support the theorists hypothesis.

Yo, seriously, I was SO disappointed XD
Oh he got me too. I like people that get me like that though xD
I'd have believed it.
He actually roundhouse kicked the witness to the head
I once knew of a defendant who admitted tacitly to the crime while acting as his own defence counsel and cross-questioning a police witness.
One pillar of his defence was denying he'd even been at the scene and during cross-questioning he asked the cop if something had been a certain way at the scene, the cop answered and he replied,
'Well, that's not how I remember it.'
The cop just looked at the judge and started laughing. At this point the defendant tried to re-arrange himself thus:
'I mean, err, I ah... didn't get that impression from photographs.'
Yup. He was found guilty.
They say the person who represents themselves has a fool for a client.
What a dumbass. Walked himself right into that lol

I wanna say that everyone should see 12 Angry Men, it is a fantastic movie, easily worth spending the time to watch it in it's entirety and maybe even a second watching to see the beautiful irony of each scene.
There was a remake with De Niro. I prefer the black and white personally.
and it's Henry Fonda not Peter
It's a great great movie indeed.
I've seen it several times over the years. I prefer the black and white version too.
@@mikegarza8648
No, there wasn't. De Niro wasn't in the 1997 remake. That one was a made for TV version with Jack Lemmon and George C Scott as Jurors 8 and 3, respectively. I think both versions are fantastic, and have their pros and cons.
A good lawyer knows the law
A great lawyer knows the judge
My lawyer's first priority is preventing himself from being charged.
His second priority is keeping me from being charged... And I'm fine with that.
And a world-class attorney knows the law, the judge, has the rhetorical skill of Cicero, and an understanding of the human condition of C.S. Lewis.
The Supreme court has ruled anyone can practice the law and no state can license it yet the BAR association (a lawyers union no different then a middle ages masons guild) has crafted legislation in direct contradiction with both Common law and the Constitution.

I think it's "occupational damage". I've noticed the same thing with psychologists. They have a hard time NOT prying into your deepest recesses, even when you simply know one and have a chat over a cup of chai latte. And they've always seemed coolly detached and deeply welcoming at the same time. It's some uncanny valley stuff right there.
Am I the only one who has no intention of being a lawyer or is in any way related to the profession but still watches his videos and pays attention to his legal expertise?
Same. And on top of that I'm from a country with a completely different legal system
LaMorito what country and how is the legal system there?
Same. And also I'm from Finland. It's a different legal system as well. But alot of these rules and laws are still followed, since mostly they are just logical. Only sometimes I notice something that is really fundamentally different. Like indeed the duty to help when someone is in danger, and you clearly can help.
yes it's still interesting

I served with Erin Brockovich's son in AFG. He was an infantryman, a Radio Transmission Operator in our platoon. He never let anyone but the closest of us know about it, and his mother sent us a large care package filled to the rim with cartons of various smokes.
Also, she was in my area in the Dallas Metroplex area advocating for cleaner water.
She's a true gem.
What a real Carin Alotavich
Cleaner water and smoking cigs. Makes sense.
Moms who give their children smokes, in my experience, can great moms, terrible moms or both.
Great short story, though. He must’ve been a cool guy.
OBJECTION! You can't just say you punched a witness and not give details!
At least he didn’t get acid thrown on his face like in the comics.
Overruled!
I think he was trying to be sarcastic. I was thinking that he was serious my first briefing too, until I thought how in the world a gu could sneak a gun into court. The fact that this is representation of court in media must have been so obviously fake to him that he thought he didn't have to comment on it, just make a joke, but little did he know that we are so ignorant of actual court that some of us took it seriously. Lol
And then I unpaused and heard the, "I'm kidding," very quietly. Lol
I wondered: If that DID happen, would you get in trouble for punching the witness?
If a man with a lower jaw like you would have told me he was threatened with a gun in court and punched the guy I'd believe every word.
I saw the scar on his jaw and was sort of ready to buy it...but it'd be all over the news if it had happened.
He looks like a guy that would do that, real manly man.

What’s even greater about the scene from A Few Good Men is that Colonel Jessup wasn’t even the accused and he admitted to the crime that the accused were accused of
Did you even watch the movie properly?
That was the exact point of the defence counsel's (Tom Cruise) argument
He WANTED the general to admit this and indict himself to prove that the two marines were... Well not innocent per se (since they literally did it) but moreover not RESPONSIBLE because they were ordered to and refusing an order was equally illegal

I served as foreman on a criminal jury (here in Canada) and it completely changed my perspective on news reports of criminal trials - we tend to judge as outside of observers based on the likelihood that someone committed a crime, but when you need to positively confirm each required element of a crime it gets a lot more complicated. It was a very impactful and life changing experience.
I was a reporter who covered the court system in Iowa, and I remember one of the admonitions the jurors were given was never visit any of the locations discussed at trial. To my knowledge, nobody ever did, but I keep thinking about the mistrial that would have caused if it were discovered jurors had gone to the scene of the incident.
I'm just curious, why are they not allowed to go to the scene of the crime or any of the locations concerning the trial?
@@beno1996ac #1, it's trespassing. They can't be on someone's property without their permission. And #2, there's the potential that it could taint the scene. Also it's as if you're investigating the case yourself, which isn't fair to the defendant.
@@amwfan88 Honestly, it's not really fair to either side, is it? Investigating for yourself circumvents the process of entering evidence and all the regulations put on evidence to try to keep the trial fair. the jury is only supposed to be a finder of facts (not finder of evidence)
@@Twisted_Code That's true as well.
That's right. There is a case being tried again now because a member of the old jury took pictures of the crime scene to share with his peers during trial.

Harrison Ressler You can watch the H3H3 videos about their lawsuit to see how that goes when the content is being used properly under fair use. I would recommend the video where the first mention they’re being sued, I think it’s called “We’re being sued!” and then the video where they talk about winning their case, I forgot what that one was called but it was probably something like “We won!” In fact, in some, I’ve noticed it on at least one, of the videos on this channel you can see in the description box it’ll say that he’s using the copyrighted content under fair use and then he cites some rulings, including the H3H3 ruling. But I don’t know how familiar he is with copyright law specifically but it certainly would be interesting if he did ever have to go to court for a copyright case over a false claim of infringement. Though since he uses movie and tv clips in videos like these, I would imagine he would be up against some very expensive lawyers representing the companies who own the rights to the movies and shows.
@@CrippledMerc none of them sue youtubers, they simply make a claim and automatically all revenue from that video belongs to them. Even if the youtuber wins the appeal (for which the "owners" of the copyright have 30 days to reply) the potential of the video is gone, since by that time it had most of the views. Then there are copyright strikes where if you get 3 of them they basically just delete your whole channel and you're gone...
The real sad and shitty thing about this is that youtube doesn't even check if the claim is true in any way, there are many youtubers who got their videos demonetized simply by some random "studio" claiming they used 4-5 seconds of their music, even tho they don't hold any rights to it. In other words, youtube has a really shitty policy where they'll throw any content creator under the bus just so they won't have even a chance of having problems with the big boys...
@@MrCrniVrag Someone got a copyrightstrike for showing his own music lol
@@miamigangbanger I would not be surprised tbh...
@@miamigangbanger theratbrat was it?
I could buy that the explanation in the Al Pacino movie is that he was well aware that he would be disbarred for doing what he did and simply didn’t care anymore
I'd like to see a Legal Eagle episode that deals with the preparation for the case in A Few Good Men.
Loving this channel as I am self-isolating at home. Have you ever done one on the legal proceedings in the movie Wild-Things?
I would really enjoy a video dedicated to 12 angry men, definitely a favorite movie
I had to watch that for my poli sci class and we were going into corona quarantine. For a while, all I could think about was that awful towel.
Yeah, it was a brilliantly written movie. It's something you don't see very often in this day and age. I'd love to see it analyzed thoroughly by an actual lawyer.
OBJECTION!
Badgering the witness doesn’t involve badgers??
No unless you are talking about a Honey Badger, which is actually more related to the Canadian Wolverine than the gentle Giant European Badger.
I know, what's up with that? Court sure would be more interesting.
Badgers? Badgers? We doan need no stinking Badgers!
No badgers, but there do often involve bears, vipers, monkeys, and mockingbirds.
Today is October 15th 2020 and I'm watching his videos! Love his channel, I became a new subscriber in February!!
True story. One of my legal teachers knew the lawyer that Tom cruise is based on in “a few good men” we didn’t go into depth about that story.
Damn, what a stud. This guy looks like a movie lawyer.
Look like the guy on -Ant Man
Money will do that
Erin Brokovich is one of my favorite films, glad to see it's fairly accurate, especially cause it was based on a true story. The two clips you used are my favorites in the movie, Julia Roberts has so much fire in this film. 😂
Erin herself is still fighting for the masses, although Ed Masrey has since died.
Best line:
There called tits, Ed
I truly enjoy each and every video you do. The difference with this particular case is that it’s a military tribunal vs a regular trial. While there was much dramatization in this case it is important to recognize the differences. 12 Angry Men is my favorite movie of all time. The version you cover is much better that the 1990s version but it’s good too.
You are exactly right. This past year I had a huge poster of this movie in my office, because the Brigadier General JAG Lawyer (he's been in the White House with several presidents and argued some of the most famous US military court cases) who was the technical legal advisor on this film had two of these posters, one in my office and one in his next to my office. As he shared with me he was on the set several months coaching all of the actors in how to conduct themselves and portray these scenes accurately.
Philadelphia 1993 one of the best lawyer movies ever. I would love to see you react to it.
That's a bloody nice suit!
That a nice _bloody_ suit!
He's also got a bloody nice face!
CommentCop Badge#666, yeah, I know! I got a good jaw but that thing is a god level jaw.
It's a law suit
The funny thing about his joke about also having to take a gun from a witness and punch them is he looks very similar to Aaron Eckhart, who plays two-face LOL
MaLLinz289 haha I was hoping someone else noticed that too. For a few seconds I was so confused after he said that kuz he looks just like him lmao
Love your channel, funny and informative
Have you ever talked about inherit the wind ? That's my favorite
@4:01 in civilian court yes you can’t be responsible over another’s actions, but the chain of command in the military means non-commissioned subordinates under a commissions officer are solely responsible, which is why Jack Nicholson’s character is getting grilled so hard; he IS responsible for the actions and whereabouts of his men.
Not to mention RICO
"I lay an order and I know everyone would follow that order"
That is what army is, you follow the orders of the person above you, if you refuse to do an order or it turns out you did not do it yea that person will get punished
@@paradoxzee6834 yes but I’m talking about duty of care and legal liability.
I love that you can tell he really enjoys some of these movies even as he's criticizing them.
Objection: speculation
frankly, hes prolly happiest, most upbeat law-yuh ive eva seen [!] i mean most r so cynical & seemingly ashamed of crap routinely engaged in ... & rest seem beaten down by horrors of bein stuk in a rly poorly managed system [!!]
That long pause before "I'm kidding" had me on more edge then most movies.
Never knew you covered …and justice for all! Nice! My legres/legwri subject made us watch this.
Are you really currently working a full time Lawyer career, recording, editing, and managing a CZcams channel, all while maintaining that, "slightly older, salt and pepper but more handsome Harvey Dent from the Black Knight" look all at the same time? If so, I think I just became convinced energy and willpower vampires exist.
Well, there's these wonderful people called assistants who can do those things for him.
I mean, he's been a lawyer for 10 years, and he seems like a pretty smart guy, so I'm sure he has the funds and brains to just hire an editor for these things :P
@@megamage911 Or he has the funs to hire people to help him with his job so he can do this as a hobby
I'm sure he pays someone to edit his videos
im a full time college student and i can film edit and upload a video in like a day if i have to! it is a lot of work but definitely viable as a hobby for any profession
Objection! Military courts usually don't have juries, and court-martials never have juries. Military law is very different from civilian law, and it starts with two words: Basic Training.
Objection! I have a boner right now
Billboe Bagginns objection argumentative
Robby Cvejanovich to be fair this is a general court martial which requires a panel of at least five members, with highest ranking member being the president(foreman), along with the military judge presiding
@@Mustafa777. ok but it is still not a "jury" but five judges.
There seem to be many different rules in military court vs civilian court. Example being you can not accuse a commissioned officer of an offense, especially a felony act lest you be charged.
13:36 Objection! Counsel has identified the actor as Peter Fonda, when in fact that is Henry Fonda.
Lol I love the phrase “it’s probably speculation”
Please do to kill a mockingbird
Exactly what I was thinking
Every time somebody mentions that title I used to think about how as a kid, I used to think the title was Tequila Mockingbird. Then I think how sad it was that I was that young & still knew what tequila was...
@@LaineyBug2020

I'M OUT OF ORDER, I'M OUT OF ORDER, YOU'RE OUT OF ORDER, THIS WHOLE COURT ROOM IS OUT OF ORDER!, Again Sorry I Couldn't Resist, And I Never saw the Film.
@Clippy Oh Yes Thank You For Catching That, The Judge is Using the Contraction for You Are Isn't he, I'll Edit that Right away, Thanks.
I love this stuff and thank you so much for this video ! My favorite are courtroom movies and whether suspenseful like whodunnits or dryer less full of surprises I find all this fascinating. I wish I chosen the law as a profession because I think it’s too late now but if what Cousin Vinnie says-that you gain a lot of the procedural knowledge you need in sitting in a courtroom simply observing lawyers doing it right or making mistakes, then I’m partway there. I could never view what I find throughly entertaining and enjoyable as studying. I will definitely subscribe. Speaking of cousin Vinnie where’s that fact vs fiction review ? That would be great fun.
Dude literally looks like the white knight Harvey Dent himself..
Not the lawyer YT needs, but the lawyer it needs right now.
He looks like if you made Harvey Dent and Ryan Reynolds the same person
edit because just realized autocorrect now wow

I love watching videos of professionals reacting to movies/tv! It helps makes me appreciate the film/tv more or less in the care they take to be realistic as they possibly can while balancing being entertaining. You are obviously knowledgeable and great! Keep up the great work would love to see this become a series more focused.
Good video... thanks for making it.
