@Kirk Johnson I wasn't sure so I looked it up. What Saul did isn't fraud in the legal sense, but then Webster has this -
      fraud
1a : deceit, trickery specifically : intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right
b : an act of deceiving or misrepresenting

    • @Slechy_Lesh

Because he hasn't aired it yet so no-one is being deceived. It's more like libel? But yes, both require airing, which Saul is quite willing to do of course. And God knows all, so that's all that counts. Very valid.

Also, RE: the Kim marriage, Kim has to save everyone. She was willing to sacrifice some of her salary to "save" Acker early in the episode. She's still trying to save Jimmy. Getting angry and trying to get him to stop? Didn't help. Supporting him but staying back? Didn't help. Going full in with him? Didn't help. She is losing Jimmy to Saul and cant find Jimmy. Next up: Throw Marriage at him. Jimmy wants a deeper relationship. In her head, if she can give him that, maybe she can save Jimmy. (What she doesn't know is Jimmy is, for the most part, dead.)
So Kim is throwing everything she can at Jimmy. Kim is using Marriage as her next attempt to pull Jimmy out, not knowing he's gone. Saul is saying "I just had one drink" with his schemes. The same way Kim's mom "Just had one drink" in the opening. She has been there. She rejected the ride before and had to carry the cello burden the entire way home.

Can everyone on this show just get an Emmy already??? Every single person deserves one!
    The writers.
    The editors.
    The cinematographers.
The casting dept-- How awesome are they at casting?! Every single role is perfectly cast. Some that pop into my mind are ADA Suzanne Ericsen, and the lady in Lubbock, TX they pulled that con on. Every single role, small or large, is so well cast it blows me away.
And the main actors? How they not have an Emmys, I do not understand. Especially Rhea Seehorn. She may be one of the most talented actors of all time. Listening to her speak about acting in the Insider Podcast episodes, and other interviews, makes me appreciate her so much more. Every single thing she does she's put so much thought behind.

The "verbal rainbow" was a really cool detail! A couple more points:
1: "Red Cloud Junior High" has more than one meaning. As you said, it plainly conjures a red cloud hanging over Kim. Additionally, it is certainly a reference to chief Red Cloud of the Lakota plains Indians; "Red Cloud's War" was a major Indian War in the 1860's, named after the chief, and was a territory dispute between the Lakota and U.S.-backed Crow tribes. Chief Red Cloud oversaw his tribes' transition to the reservation system of the 20th century. So, like how Native American tribes were the underdogs struggling against the federal government, Kim sees herself as the underdog fighting against the powerful. She instinctively sides with the underprivileged: Jimmy vs Chuck, Acker vs Mesa Verde, Saul/Jimmy vs Lalo, her pro bono cases, etc. Recall that it was Kim's idea to seek out Ms. Bitsui (a Navajo woman, I think?) in the copyright claim against Mesa Verde. This is on top of all the other Native American motifs sprinkled throughout BrBa and BCS.
2: I noticed that during Saul's shakedown of Mesa Verde, in order to present his outrageous video, he both closed the curtains and turned off the overhead lights. He extinguished both natural AND artificial lights -- he took a cue from Chuck, and even upped the ante. It was dark, but darker yet was the rude gash in the video itself that Saul Goodman sprang from. Dark, darker, darkest. Right in the middle of Don Wachtel's face. The complete lack of color, blackness, shows us the depths that Saul Goodman can sink to. Also compare this to the earlier episode when Kim (unsuccessfully) tries to convince Kevin to pick a different plot of land -- in order to present her slideshow she only dims the artificial lights, but leaves the curtains open. A half measure.

As much as I enjoy these sorts of analysis in the back of my mind I'm always asking "Is this real, is this something the director planned out, or is the commentator just pulling stuff out of his ass and we're all playing a neat little game here of coming up with symbolic meaning for random, coincidental stuff that happens to fit the storyline?" I'm usually pretty cynical about it, tbh, but even I've got to admit there's got to be *something* metaphorical behind Jimmy shutting the lights & blinds because after all he's not showing a projected film, he's playing a TV, a device that's made to show a clear picture in a normally lit room. On a purely literal level, Jimmy dimming the lights doesn't even make any sense.

Saul takes a cue from Chuck - absolutely! Chuck is brimming with the chicanery he's so angry with Jimmy for. Look at how he got Jimmy disbarred. It was beautiful string-pulling, psychological planning, and great acting required to pull those emotional strings of his younger brother. The coldness of all that aswell. Saul merely took the template from Chuck.

I love how the writers insert psychological dynamics in these relationships. We dont see that too much in other shows. Or if we do its very cheesy and superficial. Most adults usually do end following in the same dysfunctional pattern they had with their parents. Not because they want to but because its all they know and its familiar. I'm wondering if maybe her mom subjected her into running scams for money or something of that nature and that was what her mom used to bond with her. And so what we are seeing with Kim and jimmy that's how they bond the most is when they are running scams.

Such a great breakdown. two other things I noticed/thought of:
    1. When Saul is talking to the college film students in his nail salon office, the light from the hallway you can see through the window is yellow, the color of lawlessness. I think it really helps emphasize the fact that Saul is doing something under a shady context, the key word here being "context." The fact that the yellow is coming from the hall and the door is shut is significant because it visualizes how Saul is ignoring the fact that he bends the rules so much. He has put himself in his room with many other colors to distract him with while the hallway implies that to get to that point of justification he already went through a lawless path.
    2. I really like the green symbolizing Saul executing a plan and being fully "in the zone," but so far I haven't heard people talk about the fact that green is a mixture of blue and yellow. That fact alone points out that when Saul is at his most fulfilled his method is full of a mixture of yellow (transgression of the law) with some blue (justice/morality). This mixing process itself really a summary of Jimmy/Saul's entire character arc. When he was Slippin' Jimmy he indulged himself in a mostly yellow lifestyle, but when he studied the law and looked up to Chuck's actions he tried to become that, adding the blue into what is his ideal/most fulfilling flow.

I felt Saul felt the need to take Kevin down a peg or two because he may have felt that Kevin looked down upon him from his high horse just like Chuck had looked down on Jimmy his entire life. I believed Kim's story because the sense of powerlessness and feeling impoverished is what draws Kim and Jimmy together. Jimmy's behavior is familiar to her, so she accepts him without a lot of concern about the consequences of his actions. I feel Kim is tired of trying to stay above the muck because she was always placed in compromising situations as a child by her parents. We still have never heard her talk about her father, who has obviously influenced her for better or worse.

We've seen her mother being a neglectful parent and she spoke about growing up poor this season, but we still don't know what kind of man her father was. Was he strict, kind hearted, gruff, addicted to something, a jail bird...? When we find some of that out, we may know some of Kim's motives and understand her character better.

  • @nangke
    @nangke Před 4 lety +10

Kim's flashback was such a lore drop: the relationship with her mother, which informs how Kim handles it when Jimmy lies to her; and btw did anyone notice the way Kim's mother drives is just like Jimmy? Super speedy in a POS car, with brakes squealing to a precise stop). Also the fact that Kim played cello seems like it puts her on a similar path to Chuck, education-wise, but we know that she also used to party in college with Paige. Way back in season 1, Kim mentioned that she had to be there for her grandmother towards the end of her life, surrounded by scumbag cousins -- I wonder if Kim's mother should be counted as a scumbag as well.
I didn't initially think of Jimmy's father and how Jimmy decided how NOT to be an adult from the behavior his dad modeled, but now that you bring it up with Kim and her mother (and how Kim doesn't want to follow her example), that makes a lot of sense. From my initial take on the scene, I was thinking that if Jimmy and Chuck had a relationship that soured because Chuck decided to be more of a figure of morality/authority than a brother, then maybe Kim and her mother's relationship soured because Kim's mom shirked being a responsible, moral adult?

I am thoroughly intrigued and enjoying your breakdowns of Better Call Saul. In fact, despite the season being over, I don't think I am alone in suggesting that you continue putting the careful time and thought in each of the remaining episodes (and perhaps even going back into episodes of previous seasons missed: as well as breaking bad --- as we have a long wait for Season 6 ahead of us). Anyway, I have a theory regarding Kim that I'd very interested in hearing your thoughts on: I believe she actually has a criminal past and there are some glaring clues that seem to confirm my theory (at least two in particular that I have noticed). The first clue is in episode 7, at the courthouse where they are being wedded. First Saul is requested to provide notes on past marriages: and we look at Kim's reaction expecting surprise ---- but its underwhelming. But, that's not the glaring clue to which I am referring, but rather a bit of foreshadowing. The clue comes during the civil ceremony and the country representative says "huh, no middle name?" I don't know about you but alarm bells went off, hearing this --- could it mean that Kim Wexler is not her original name? Did she get the Vacuum Cleaner Change of Identity treatment? This would explain why the move all the way from Nebraska (note the plate in the scene with Kim's mother) to New Mexico. As for what the crime was, I have to wonder if it involves some ill-gotten possession in Nebraska that Gene could have use for -- hence his decision to go back there. But the second glaring clue is actually obscured by a second meaning, if you pardon me jumping ahead, in the pen-ultimate episode where Kim looks through the bullet hole of the mug. And so did Lalo, in looking through the bullet hole of the car. They both see through Jimmy's story of events that unfolded during his trip through the dessert: But the deeper meaning is far more sinister and profound. It shows a common-thread that no-one would have expected, that exists between Lalo ... and Kim. Once again, it was both of them that peered through the bullet holes. There is plenty of confirmation of this throughout the final episode of the season: Kim looking through the keyhole, long after Lalo has left and her seemingly non-chalant attitude after what should have been a confrontation that would rattle any normal person to their their core. Jimmy is hardly normal and he was far more impacted by it than Kim was. Even when Saul told Kim that Lalo was going to be killed, notice how Kim's sigh of relief doesn't even appear particularly genuine? Saul was so rattled through the final episode that what we saw more of was the original Jimmy, unsure of himself, questioning the path he has chosen. Yet, Kim seems more sure of herself than ever. Season 6 is going to be mind-blowing, not only because we are going to find out about Kim's story but somehow Lalo is going to lead us to it. And just as we thought Saul was working towards being "Amigo del Cartel" ... perhaps It'll be Kim instead. Assuming she wasn't already.

Good thinking, also, Lalo was actually pretty impressed by Kim. A lot of comments suggested she was in big trouble for going to see him in jail etc. But Lalo also said to Jimmy how he was impressed by her. When Kim called him out on how he can't trust anyone, that his house was out of order, Lalo is like, damn girl, Hmmgh! (Kim's biggest problem is with Gus, he simply wouldn't tolerate her knowing details of his business. This is the real reason why Mike got Jimmy to leave his phone on, in case she revealed too much, and would become another Werner situation.)
To me Red Cloud says everything about Kim.

Another incredibly well put video essay! When I watched the episode I had trouble connecting the stories, now it became very clear to me: we are prone to repeat relationship patterns created in childhood, specially with our caregivers, even though they cause us suffering, it is familiar and in a sense it feels right. Is an unconscious behavior. Unless you look very close in the mirror, as we have seen Kim doesn't, and confront the wound is very likely you will find yourself in the same place all over again, even though it seems you're desperately trying not too. What a tragic paradox.

Saul's directing scene is probably one of my favourite moments in the whole show. Here's his notes for just one actor:
“That’s your spot. Do not move from it, okay? But also, don’t be rigid, okay? Try to be natural. And speak to me. You know, conversational, everyday, like a friend... There’s fear here, there’s emotion. You’re searching for a hero, you know? 'Will no-one save you?' But don’t hit it too hard. Just throw it away, but with feeling. There’s cue-cards if you need them. But don’t look at them, look at me, okay? But you know, they’re there.”

Brilliant analysis on the parallels to Kim's childhood and subsequent marriage proposal. My interpretation of Kim is that growing up she often felt isolated and alone on her path to try and craft a better future for herself. This kind of journey can take a toll on a person, often feeling as though its an uphill struggle. Ever since the mail room, she and Jimmy have had their ups and downs, but ultimately she has always had someone by her side that she can confide and take solace in. And yeah he's far from perfect, but there is a really palatable understanding that is felt between them, like in the bottle throwing scene in episode 503, that has grown so strong that it is manifested without even needing to talk to one another. Their comfort with each other is a really special attribute of their relationship. When Kim was having the wheels turn in her head about leaving Jimmy, the idea of having to go at life alone again after all the time she's put in to her partner is understandably a terrifying thought, one that she clearly was not prepared to actually act on. This feels like the ultimatum of the sunk cost fallacy as well, which has been a recurring theme in the show. At some point, Kim was going to need to pass judgement by either jumping head first with Jimmy in the union of marriage, or backing out and cutting her losses.

I have been looking forward to this breakdown really bad, in large parts because of the twist in the end. Thanks John! Again very insightful and inspiring to watch your analysis! 🙏
Little note from my side on the "Level 8 scene" which I think can be added to the discussion. When I look back at the beginning of BCS, Kim and Jimmy have been spending plenty of time on the basement floors at HHM, symobolyzing their professional low status. I think you have mentioned that in some other video as well. And then in S4E9 look how Kim seems to be at the very top level (rooftop, sky is the limit) and how Jimmy was insanely trying to reach the top getting to her, with this old car and tires screeching, just to be told that he is "always down". And now look at how confident he is standing, leaning next to the car, not trying to wait on the top floor but pulling Kevin down to this level where he feels comfortable. I think a great scene that also has this "level metaphor" centered in the total picture. Saul is now playing with the big boys.
Sorry I kept this so long, I rarely comment.. 😅
Thanks again John! Best wishes to you from Germany!

    For future analysis!
Please don’t forget the juicer analogy. Jimmy uses it throughout this series (without making a mess) as a point of bubbling issues. Whenever Kim uses it in episode 9 of this season, it’s never really been used by her and it spills on her shirt. Which can say two things; a) Kim is getting to close to “the game” than Jimmy is comfortable with. B) he doesn’t want the same bubbling issues to “spill” on her.
And there is always a constant tugging and pulling between them, and you can see it most prominent towards the end of the season.

I actually predicted this exact thing happening two months ago in a BCS group, them marrying to prevent testifying against each other- no one believed me. Felt good to be right (again) ! Haha
Awesome breakdown, as always. I loved the insight into young Kim, as as how she was establishing future patterns. Wow, that thought was chilling.

So much I love about this breakdown, btw. Another one I just remembered was what you said about the "Smoke on the Water" song he plays (or hums) when we're supposed to remember he's living an amoral existence. So true. I always noticed it was his go-to, but it always comes directly after a specifically Slippin Jimmy moment. Almost like he's taken back to his Slippin Jimmy days when he'd heard that song so much.

When Kim was a kid she probably didn't feel very much loved by her mother/parents. However shady Jimmie is she can't deny that he is devoted to her. Which grips her when she is about to leave him. He fills the void left by her parents, but even if that brings her down a slippery slope it gives her a sense of security. And that's what Kim wants, security. And that's why she is so into control and order, it gives her a sense of just that.

Nice analysis on the fish tank reflection framed neatly on Kim's jacket. I'd like to add, in a previous episode, Steven Ogg's character made an odd remark about the fish being infected with parasites, despite the fish looking fine to us viewers. Perhaps this shot with the reflection symbolizes the "parasites" swimming within Kim.
Saul's presentation was also a stark contrast to Kim's in an earlier episode. Her PowerPoint presentation was based on facts while Saul's was full of lies. Both made use of the colour green (recall the green box representing the alternative construction site) but Saul's usage was much more excessive and successful. Even the lights in the parking garage had a greenish tint.
Also, missed opportunity to refer to "young Kim" as Lil' Kim!

I want to add to the comparison between Jimmy and Kim's mom. Don't forget when Chuck said to Jimmy, "You're like an alcoholic who refuses to admit he's got a problem." Its all intentional.

The people that often complain about this show, or don't like it are totally insane! It's far from black and white but some can't see past that for whatever reason. All of these nuances, metaphors, and symbolism they have on here are incredible. Not to mention the beautiful shots, as well as the Breaking Bad Easter Eggs. Looking forward to the breakdowns of the other four episodes, great work man!

3:00 this looks like a reference to Breaking Bad season 1, where Tuco says “blue, yellow, pink. whatever just get me more of that,” after seeing the Blue Sky meth for the first time. It’s the same scene with the “tight tight tight” line and when he beats No-Doze to death.

I’ve been waiting for these next few videos desperately 🥰 so glad you’re back and well. I liked the comparison you made between the opening scene and the closing scene. Since this episode aired I knew there must be a reason why they chose now to give us that sneak peek into Kim’s childhood. Kim is one of the most mysterious leading characters in television history. She holds her emotions, her history, her thoughts and opinions very close to her chest, so it’s always important when we see any part of her past, or witness her open up more about anything. She’s very careful with her words and only speaks something aloud when it matters. Your analysis of the opening scene does help me to understand why she would stick with Jimmy when she herself has just explained all the reasons not to. Ever since this episode aired, I’ve been kind of baffled as to why she would decide to marry him. [Spoilers for those who haven’t seen the end] After seeing how the season concludes, I now think that Kim was less angry about being played by Jimmy, and more angry that he took her play out of her hands; she could have done it, she could have done her own play and she didn’t like being underestimated. Maybe people have always underestimated her, seen her as this figure of morality and good. But she’s drawn to Jimmy and the trenches of society because she’s lived it, it’s where she’s from. She knows these people because she IS these people. Maybe she’s just been better than Jimmy at playing the high rise game to success? Towing the line, being put together, crossing her t’s and dotting her i’s? Maybe she’s sick of pretending to be something she’s not too....I’m just spitballing because I find Kim fascinating but often difficult to read and understand. It seems like season 6 is heading in a direction I wasn’t expecting judging by that final episode (and what they’re setting up kind of makes sense if it means Howard will become more integral to the story again, he hasn’t had a real reason to be in the storyline the last couple of seasons). I was actually expecting Jimmy to do something that would push Kim away for good to keep her safe - I thought that was the something unforgivable. The storyline I least expected was that Kim might still be around in Breaking Bad times, but these writers like to keep us guessing! I think Kim wants to do something unforgivable to prove to Jimmy she’s not a pillar of truth and morality, she’s from the trenches to and she DOES get it. She can con them as good as he can and she can make her own choices. If Breaking Bad was an examination of Right vs Wrong and where our choices lead us, I think Better Call Saul has always been a discussion of where choices don’t make a difference; where an individual’s journey is inevitable despite their choices. Perhaps Kim is tired of fighting the inevitable? It clearly doesn’t make her happy to work for big banks and play it straight if it means she’s overworked all the time and the rich get richer while the poor get no legal representation. Maybe she thinks it’s all for the greater good?

What a beautiful shot of Kim and the gold fish. I liked your explanation, but I originally saw it as a reflection of Kim feeling like she was simply treading water because she subconsciously knew the relationship with Saul was not going anywhere. Just my two cents.

Though Kim comes to the commercial shoot to fix this mess, I think the director was trying to convey that Kim is to Jimmy as Jimmy is to his pet (!) gold fish rather than this message of containment. She fed Jimmy this con and we see a slight grin from her, both at the end of the last episode when she gets the idea and as she stares into Jimmy's proverbial tank at the nail salon, just as Jimmy smiles as his fish begins to eat. But now she wants out and Jimmy isn't ACTUALLY a gold fish. Unfortunately for her, she can't control him the way she wants. Shaping and controlling (maybe protecting? depending on future flashbacks we may get) Jimmy the way she couldn't control her mother maybe the answer to the 'why the hell are you still with him?' question we've been asking.
