  • In this video, I take a look at Shimano's cheapest clipless set of pedals that they have on the market. There was a recent sale where you could get these pedals for around $24. They're some of my favorite pedals, so they deserved some screen time!

Your advice about using the wrench helped a lot. Thanks!

Thanks for that review! I also prefer spd for all riding. I've been using 520's for years on both my mountain and road bikes since 2005. They are indeed less expensive compared to the rest of the Shimano pedal family while lacking no quality. I used Look kits and other road systems for racing but always stick with the 520's for my regular rides. They're so reliable and easy to clip in and out. A few grams in weight hasn't made a difference at all in my experience. I'm not a weight weenie so my other faves are the A-530's on my commuter and also on my road bikes in the past.

Jordan, thanks for the like. I want to share my experience with these pedals during snow and ice rides. During my commutes in the lousy winter weather here in Richmond, VA, I've loved these pedals even more. The icy road muck kicks up into them but seems to fall out automatically due to the open design. I never lost a clip during my rides and when I do stop, I can give the pedal a kick to release all of the the funk that builds up in the cage. I've had road shoes ice up and freeze in the past leaving my cleat frozen to the pedal. That was teh suck!!! There's nothing like falling over on an icy road when you can't clip out! Maybe I failed winter riding 101 there but I never expected that. The 520's are so versatile in all conditions. I know that Shimano makes a lighter version of this pedal but I've never been interested since the 520 is so reliable.

Which (current) shimano shoes would fit best with these pedals. I am buying a road bike and would like to have mtb shoes for walking around.
