  • Hawaii is still getting fewer numbers of Japanese visitors than before the pandemic, and a new UH report says a weak yen may keep them away a while longer.

I live in Hawaii, there is NO Aloha here! Japan is NOT expensive even without the weak Yen. I do not support local or the U.S. economy, because they don’t support us. Everything is a ripoff in the states, and tipping is ridiculous. I travel abroad as often as I can, and when I come home, I spend as little as possible, rinse and repeat.

If you don't support local Hawaiian or US economy, why don't you move somewhere else that you do support ? What if everyone else felt the same way, and does not support your place of business where you work? You would be out of work.

You need to experience aloha in Hawaii. There is still aloha in Hawaii. Aloha is love, hello and goodbye and giving and receiving. Receiving a lei, a cooked meal and warm welcome is aloha. Aloha is still here in Hawaii.

@@tw238 Support is like loyalty, it’s earned. Most local businesses in Hawaii lost my support. Prices keeps going up, quality and quantity keep going down. I support only the few businesses here that do not rip off their customers. I feel lots of businesses have FOMO pricing or charge as much as they can get away with. For example, if one restaurant charges $20 for a bowl of simple Pho, other Vietnamese restaurants will do the same just because that’s the new going rate. Honestly, if Japan let me immigrate there easily, I would apply for citizenship or permanent residence.

@@mikes_in_paradise78 Aloha is just a sales pitch to attract tourists, in reality, very little Aloha exists, especially from the Hawaiians. I’ve lived here for over 20 years, it gets worse year after year.

The “warmth and aloha” that was mentioned is the image that Hawaii gets tourists from, but it’ll only go so far. Places like Japan and Korea are cheaper even without considering the exchange rate, and their food, service and experiences are arguably of better quality with their own versions of warmth and aloha.
For Japanese, islands in Okinawa present a good alternative to Hawaii for lower prices and with fewer worries. Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, etc. too. Hawaii is also competing with them and right now I feel like it’s mainly the image that is keeping them in the game.

It’s a protest on the business $ in Hawaii they have priced out tourism $ Hawaii have to innovate and support entrepreneurial businesses. Hawaii has a monopoly problem and they have no business offices that are affordable. It’s not the locals fault $ return the local citizens to Hawaii. Don’t blame Japan they are also being anti tourism, many of these people need to be banned they have no respect for rules and law.

Japan's economy has been in the dumps since their bubble burst over 30 years ago. Their government dare not raise prices since their workers pay has also been basically stagnant for almost as long. Why would their banks pay the consumer interest to take out loans (negative interest rates) for 8 years only ending this March, when they finally raised their lending rates to 0.00 to 0.1% interest... Now THAT'S a BAD economy.

Hawaii needs/should to invest back in the state. The Caribbean does offer the same weather and better beaches. Cities like Rome and Barcelona invest back into their cities to attract more tourist. Barcelona alone trumps Hawaii so much attraction. I'm saying this because I love my state HI. Do better.
