Sorry but this was shameful . South American diving and poor refereeing. Peru tried it against Australia to no avail, the world of soccer is changing and they don’t like it Asian and African teams are the future along with Australia who had to play 16 games in other countries and still qualified and New. Zealand who should have at least had extra time in this game.
As a peruvian I was obviously rooting for Costa Rica, after being eliminated I didn't want to see another latin american country kicked out of the world cup by an oceanian country and I wanted to see Navas in his last world cup, but New Zealand really impressed me, in the friendly match we were surprisingly pushed to the limit, and against Costa Rica you were arguably the better team despite having one man less and having a questionable referee. The progress in the last 3 U20 world cup could be seen here, a lot of young players like Cacace seem promising as they're already in Europe, also as far as I know there's a guy with a contract with Bayern Munich and other who plays at PSV that couldn't make it to the playoffs due to injuries, there's more future in NZ football that in peruvian football lmao. You'll be at the next world cup, and I hope you can surprise the world

Costa Rica didn’t play good football, but in this kind of games you plays for win and just that’s matters. 5WC against 2WC… history also matters here. Great played from NZ national team but… they need a lot more to beat CR national team, who are more experienced in that kind of games.

Costa Rican here... NZ played good, prettier alternatives, and definitely dominate the game. But, dominate is not necessarily CONTROL or real options to score. Navas had not a lot of work this time. Several Central American and Caribbean teams are more dangerous than "All whites" for sure. Evidently, CR didn´t had more options to score either.... but the game is more simple than that. During the first 2 minutes, when both teams needed the goal, CR got it, and then, NZ needed to score during 88 minutes more, and they just could not. Believe me that if NZ had scored and tied the match, CR would definitely played prettier, and dominate the game until get the upper hand again. We have to admit, the referee was in our side, the VAR decisions were right, but in some other Penalties or red card (costarrican elbow strike) VAR didn´t appear, and that was unfair. FIFA has never been professional or a competent company, sometimes you get some help from referees, sometimes some robbing... Of course CR can not pay to FIFA... so, if NZ was not able to score against the weak CR, NZ is not able to play the world cup. Welcome to soccer world "All whites". Nice try!!

It's a bit unfair these games are now just one game playoff when they should be home and away like in previous campaigns. NZ would have had a fairer qualifying system if they joined the Asian Confederation like Australia but Oceania will get an automatic spot next time round so it looks like they'll stay in Oceania.

The playoffs have always been 2 games with each team getting a home game.
But they haven’t for this World Cup. Because of the pandemic and the needed restrictions.
All the qualifications had to be played a year later than originally planned. And with fewer games.

Hello from Costa Rica! First of all, I consider it is unfair that FIFA doesn’t give you guys the direct pass to play in the World Cup. New Zealand has the football it takes to go make a great participation. However, I think some people might be naïve when they think you can win games by playing best on the field. You just have to see the last UEFA Champions League final to realize that Liverpool was the best team of the game, but it only took 1 goal for Real Madrid to win the cup. That’s what football is all about. As a Costa Rican, I know that we played a shitty game because of course you would like your team to be more offensive and have more possession and options upfront. Nevertheless, as someone who has watched football all my life, I can tell you that this is how we play in Costa Rica. It might not be the best kind of football, but we do play to win even if we win playing really bad. Like I mentioned, this isn’t ideal, but that’s how we play it and that’s how we’re going to the cup. Please wish us luck, we’ll need it. I really hope there aren’t hard feelings, like I said, I believe New Zealand deserves to qualify to the cup directly. F* FIFA!

The ref did wrong with the disallowed goal. The Costa Rican player went into the duell with full force too. It is actually allowed to use your muscle power in football. FIFA should have used a more experienced ref for such an important match. I think he was way too much distracted by the protesting Costa Rican players shouting for VAR. He gave in very easily. Not a good sign for the WC.

Yes you are allowed to challenge for the ball shoulder to shoulder but not by wrapping your arm around the thigh. Had both players had their arms intertwined play on by not when it is a clear foul by the Kiwi. Sad that our Anzac cousins lost but the refs' decision under VAR was 100% correct.

As a neutral, I enjoyed the game. CR did what they been doing in Qualifying. They absorb pressure, and are comfortable without the ball. Early goal was all CR wanted. Which is why NZ dominated the ball, and took the initiative. Now talking about the ref, I think he was pretty much perfect. NZ goal was a clear foul. 50/50 doesn't apply to holding on a players leg, and the red card was obvious, when we saw it on VAR. Overall, intense game. 👍.
Lol you're actually cooked if you think the ref did a good job. Based on your logic if the 50/50 challenge leading to the NZ goal was a foul (which is wasn't) then that means the CR goal should've been chalked off too because the CR player was holding the NZ defender from the throw in meaning he was obstructed from getting back.
It was more the inconstancy from the ref. Wood got pushed in the box, not called. At 7:19 player got elbowed in the head, not called. Reid was being rugby tackled in the box before a corner, not called. All key moments that the ref didn't pick up on.

Quiero decir, que el gol de NZ fue bien anulado, eso era falta, y el que terminara en gol no fue coincidencia, al que tumbaron era uno de los dos defensas centrales, así que es normal que el área quedara vulnerable. Pero también, debo decir que Contreras merecía roja cuando dio ese codazo, y el "penal" a favor de NZ, al menos merecía ser visto en el VAR. Así que sí, hubieron ayudas para CR, pero el gol estuvo bien anulado, y la tarjeta roja también estuvo bien. De todas formas jugaron muy bien, se nota que han evolucionado muy rápido

Just watched it now for the first time. Unlucky loss for NZ. A very early goal was conceded and they got unlucky with 2 sort of 'fifty-fifty decisions'. Costa Rica seems to have sat back the whole match after the very early goal.
Congratulations to Costa Rica but unless they have improved in a major way, I see them finishing last in their World Cup group with either 0 or 1 point.

That disallowed goal though. The ref was close enough to see it the first time and let it slide. Then decides it's a foul. Also, that was a collision of bodies, indicated by the CIA Rica play by the way, not a foul.

Costa Rica were poor, they were completely out played & that was a desperately poor VAR decision. Having said that we had enough chance to win three games, so can ultimately blame ourselves.

Agree with the red card, that was a sloppy challenge. That VAR goal review however was a sham. Looks like NZ got CONCACAFed...

New Zealand had control of the game, but soccer is not about who control the game but about who score goals. There is a clear foul against Duarte in the disallowed goal, it is not 50-50 but the New Zealand player loses the position and pulls the leg of Costa Rica's defender Duarte. The red card is fair too, Kosta Barbarouses was able break Calvo's foot. It is comprehensible to be angry with the referee if you lose, but the VAR is only activated when the VAR referees call the main referee to check something...
Duarte fouled himself. If you watch the video he initiates first contact by pushing down on NZ player shoulder forcing him to the ground kiwi player in doing so brings Duarte down. Not unfairly. Duarte fouls him first. Everyone says Duarte challenge was 50/50 which is correct it is except in challenging the way he did he bought the NZ player down which cause him to come down with him Duarte just tried to milk it instead of getting up like the kiwi player did. Not a foul. And the red card well that's subjective. There was no force in it he did not have any intent. Compared to some of the tackles iv seen during world cup playoffs this is a yellow card every day of the week. It's only a red card to a VAR who is wrong.

Nah it's not mate. Costa Rican player initiates the contact and clearly puts pressure down on the NZ player which causes him to start to fall the kiwi player brings the Costa Rican player with him via the pressure exerted by the costa Rican, in essence the Costa Rican fouled himself really. That's play on in every other league in the world.

Lo que más me gustó de Keylor Navas fue su gol al minuto tres. Viste como Keylor corrió por la banda izquierda, como centró el balón y sobre todo como remató para anotarle a Nueva Zelanda!! Definitivamente, a Costa Rica la salvó su arquero.
