- Dirty Smith demonstrates the concept of turning a hinge out of .25" x 2" and .25" x 1". We will forge the ends, remove stock, forge some decoration on the strap under the power hammer and seal it up with beeswax.
Have something to say? Now is the time! Stay, sub and enjoy!

I love how so many metal workers do some sort of sliding/glancing hit with their hammer AS IF it would "push" the metal in the direction of the slide. Lol
It's complete nonsense. Hit it right smack with the good direction . Stop with the glancing blows ; it does NO-THING . THe metal moves right at the impact in ONE single vector (you can NOT physically impart several vectors with one blow, it simply is not how physics work in this universe ) and then the hammer rebounds instantly imparting no more energy into the piece, obviously
Stop it lol
It’s called scrolling.
Commenting to say I just used this video to see how to make a bracket for my motorbike seat (essentially a bit of flatbar with hinge barrel on the end) after trashing an unreasonable amount of flatbar trying to cold set it into a circle to fit my bolt. Worked great. Thanks.
perfect 👍
Very nice video in my opinion this is definitely one of the best educational blacksmith channel out there.
thank you!
👍✌️⚒️
much more educative it's an opportunity of creating job for yourself.
Thanks putting these videos out there. I've always loved blacksmithing and finally decided to take it up for my own. Your videos are a great help and inspiration.
A very well presented video, straight talking and in a language a lay man can relate to,well done.
I am 74 ad am starting blacksmithing. Yours is the best series by far.
BlueTarpGuy thank you for watching and the feedback! Greatly appreciated, sir!
Very very informative.....I like the way you describe each step in detail and the reasons why you do this or that, excellent, thank you !
Glad your feeling better. I look forward to more of the same type of videos.
Great lesson! I always learn more than the episodes main focus just by watching you work. Thanks for doing these!
Thank you for watching!
Another great video! Probably the best yet! Loved the begginning!!
I had 5 guys lined up and when I told them what the plan was...3 left! lol but I think they had enough character to fill a room. Thanks for watching, Mark!
That is SO COOL!!
I have such a fancy for black smithing because of the raw ability to create building materials, tools, and the most basic things. The stuff you could do with a hinge!!! I wish I could smith a hinge that nice.
practice is the secret! no one will remember the ugly ones if you dont show them...ha!!
Yet again... Another outstanding video.. I know you weren't feeling well, but I personally like the way you taught/said everything you were doing at the time...(not dubbed over) a sign of a true craftsman, knowing what you do well you can explain everything. Where to hit and why. Thank you again for making detailed video while recovering..
thanks for watching and the feedback!
Always wanted to have a go at a barrel lidded pirate chest! You just showed my how to make the hinges! Thanks , thats great!
Beautifully done. I absolutely love your videos.

Good job John from dublin
Good Video Rory

Over 25,000 views! Awesome!

Good to see that you're consuming the right beverage to aid in your recovery. I just discovered that it was made originally for pregnant women! Go figure! Before you get bummed out thinking it's a girlie drink, it's not. But, back then, that's when men were men and women were tough! Keep forging!
lol keep it dirty!
👍👍👍👍👍
What oil you use on cloth, wasted oil, linen oil? *(subscribed )
That is wicked pissah!
So excellent! Thanx!
thank you!
Nice one, Rory! Hope you get to feeling better soon. Remember to cook your food on an oven...not over your forge.
ohh a cooking one is coming lol
+Rory May (Dirty Smith) Oh lord. *facepalm*
let's do this!
Nice stuff. Subbed. Just "met" you on the Tim Schmoyer call. And the Jimmy Diresta comment below mine...legit. :-)
GreenShortz DIY subbed back at ya! 👊 I’ll be checking out everyone’s links tonight

awesome video can't wait to start forging myself I'll have to get me a dirty smith bracer ;)
The bracers are worth it. I bought two and they really save my wrists from fatigue. It does suck, however, when a piece of hot scale decides to take up residence between your skin and the leather.
+James McMillen yes I want one and plan on getting one as soon as funds become available and I bet so lol
I really like them. The leather used is thin enough to be pliable, but stiff enough to keep your wrists from curling over (a bad habit) when you're hammering. Keep in mind, teenage daughters think they're cool and like to "borrow" them sometimes, so keep them in a secured area.
Even I can follow the steps, I haven't ever tried blacksmithing, but it seems possible.
you should try it then, it gets alot more "complicated" once you are then one stading with the hammer.
I agree with DiRT. Try it sometime. You won't regret that decision.
What kind of wax do you use? Great video! Thank you!
most of the time johnsons paste wax
give up and become a welder..... LOLthat's fucking hilarious
will you be getting anymore bracers in the DirtySmith shop?
yes! :) soon too
epic
As Salam Alaikum....the more I see.... the more I like 👌👍😄
Sweeettt
What kind of anvil is he using?
a big black one
HAAA, i asked about a year ago, looks like a Peddinghaus?
great vid..but ugh, Guinness....yuksville city Arizona!!!
Traduit la langue pour comprendre le vidéo
well to be fair, you were all doing it wrong, guinness NEEDS to be poured ;)
Have you ever made bells that go on sleigh reins? I make the bells okay but when I fasten them to leather they loose their jingle. Attaching the bell is the big problem but learning the proper way to make the bell would be appreciated. Thanks for your great videos. Lets do this!
I have not but could try. Maybe a christmas tut? Thanks for watching, sir!
But it's still Thursday. ....
guess Ill remove it then :/
Wait I'm watching now!!!
+Rory May (Dirty Smith) it's Friday somewhere
no no its ok I understand. It is thursday. I mean who wants to watch this if its not friday
+Rory May (Dirty Smith) You're probably right. It could mess up sometimes entire weekend. If they watch this now, they might think tomorrow is Saturday, then try to go to church when they think it's Sunday, and get embarrassed. Do you want that evil on you?
