How do you feel about grammar?
For some of us, grammar can sometimes be pretty overwhelming. It has been for me, but in my years of using and teaching English, I’ve realized something crucial about it. We can’t build grammar just by learning grammar rules. We have to build ‘Grammar muscles’, and in order to do that, we need to have the right strategy and focus on what matters. That’s always the case, isn’t it?
In this episode, you’re going to learn how to do just that - how to learn and understand grammar so you can become more fluent and confident in English.

  • @jean-louismorgenthaler4725

Do I like grammar? That's a good question. Actually, I love grammar when it helps, and I dislike it when it makes things dull, confusing or boring. Indeed, sometimes grammar looks like at least a waste of time, and at worst, a way to beautifully hold you back and mess things up. Yet, in some other cases, grammar can trigger an epiphany in a student's brain. You know, that happens when you suddenly understand something in a simple bright way that, that was before foggy, senseless or inconsistent. Cheers from France.

Hi, I've been thinking about the nature of language for a while, and so far, my conclusion is that it is neither about how many grammar rules we master nor how wide is our lexicon. Language is obviously much more about syntax but, above all, it is about eloquence. As many of us can guess even if some prefer to not admit it, we don't need to know all the grammar rules or memorize the whole dictionary to develop some eloquence. So, in my opinion, getting used to reading (or listening to) good authors is as useful as learning from our mistakes. How can we recognize such authors? As in most fields, it's a question of feeling, Any sentence not only means something but also plays more or less good music. Sometimes I hear foreign people who speak French elegantly although their grammar is far to be perfect, and sometimes I hear French people whose sentences sound strangely wrong although their grammar is correct.
I still struggle with the present perfect, I often wonder whether I have to use it. I struggle even more with the determinant "the", I can hardly remember whether I have to put it or not before a noun. Of course, prepositions and collocations are the most difficult part to deal with. Thank you for this helpful advice.

In order to use English tenses correctly, an English learner should change his/her perception of time respectively. Time is a mental construction, not a physical phenomenon. Various nations perceive time differently so it can be illustrated in their languages.

Personally, I was wondering how you can speak English with good grammar ( I think 😁), but you said earlier that you didn't like learning English grammar ? Where's all that well-structured sentences you're making when presenting the ideas in the video came from? How did you first learn English? As far as I know, most English learners will always start learning the grammar first before they're actually speaking that language. Imagine if English learners don't learn grammar, they won't be able to get what they want because they're using the wrong grammar. Lastly, when you said that it just happened that way, well, that's super awesome, I wish I could be like you who doesn't have to dig deeper into the English grammar but can naturally produce correct grammatical sentences in English 👍😁

Grammar can be learnt by chunks. To build phrases or sentences. I think is the method you say. The structure doesn't change, and from it, there are examples for millions to create by changing the nouns, verbs, etc. In basic grammar I struggle with past simple, continuous and past perfect. I also struggle with future tense. In general, my problem is that I make elementary mistakes when I shouldn't because I'm learning the C1 level of English.

Studying grammar excessively in my opinion is usually a waste of time. Some rules are useful, like when to use simple past and present perfect or will to and going to future, however if you expose yourself enough to the language you will learn grammar intuitively which is better. It's not effective trying to learn a language like we learn mathematics.

Mazel tov - the most grounded and practical approach to grammar that I've seen! I'd only add that I find tackling grammar visually makes a big difference. Almost all grammars present you with intimidating slabs of text and tables. This is emphatically NOT how the human brain remembers and learns. So I try to boil the grammar down to its essence as visual diagrams, using colour, locus mnemonics and neural-like visual connections. This makes the patterns FAR easier to understand and visualise. Then in the early stages of building the speaking habit, I can quickly refresh my understanding with my visual cheat-sheet. And pretty quickly the diagram is imprinted in my memory and I have a visual reference guide to fall back on every time I get a bit confused...
