I love how Jack and his friends talk abt independent bookstores at a party
3:56 A Separation by Katie Kitamura
5:04 The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
9:29 Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson
10:40 New York, My Village by Uwem Akpan
12:40 I Could Live Here Forever by Hanna Halperin
Jack, if I was you, I’d have a trumpet and a trombone ready for all occasions. Also, no doubt that you’d create a good bookstore crawl template.
When Jack tells me I'm a lucky sausage, I genuinely feel like a lucky sausage. 🥰
Bookstores mentioned in the video:
1. The Mysterious Bookshop
(optional) Barnes and Noble Tribeca
2. Yu and Me Books
3. Aeon bookstore
4. Sweet Pickle books
5. Bluestockings Cooperative
6. Book bar
fun fact - the owner of Yu and Me books once told me the place used to be a funeral home before she took over. 😮
ooh that makes sense! there's quite a few funeral homes either side of the store
Lesser known use for a bookmark:
Obscuring parts of the text down the page, especially chapter endings.
When the story/mood gets more intense in a book, I have a tendency to jump ahead in the text out of pure excitement, so I end up spoiling great moments, turns or jokes before their due time. But I hate spoilers, I want to experience the piece of art as the author intended. I learned to catch when my attention gets jumpy and use the bookmark to hide the part on the page that I feel to be risky. Those few moments of covering can give me an optimal reading experience.
But I also read a bit slow, based on a read-along video, twice as slow as Jack, so he might not need a bookmark for that either.
I do this all the time!
Another book about addiction that’s incredibly raw and touching is Junk by Melvin Burgess. It was my favourite book I read last year and I’ll never be able to forget it, especially because it’s about teen addiction and you experience how their lives get completely flipped at such a young age as a result of their h^ roin addiction.
Woooh it’s a good day when Jack posts
Jack kinda motivates me with such videos in which he shows the books he bought recently because every time I realize that I need to study really hard to spend a lot of money on the books in the future.
Omgggg I’m so glad you’re reading The Great Believers it is AMAZING and HEARTBREAKING (not exactly as heartbreaking as the little life cause there is still a message of hope and optimism interwoven BUT STILL)
I always get so excited whenever Jack posts
just wanted to say, i bought a man called ove yesterday because i remembered you did a review on it!
it will be one of your most memorable reads 🫶
Jack, will you please fix the asymmetrical picture frames in the back? I can’t look at anything else😂
Jack said “book stored out.” 🤣 Silly Jack, that’s not a thing…
Fun video and now I really want to visit New York again and do this book store crawl!
6:20 I’m reading “A Little Life” right now and loving it… Jack knows what I should read next before I do
So glad Bluestockings made the list!! I recommend it to everyone visiting nyc
I love this! I've lived in NYC for 10 years and never heard of several of these :O also, if you are going farther north, enough to be going to the Strand, you should check out Three Lives & Co. in the West Village. It's mostly fiction but it's beautifully curated and has a decently sized queer lit section too. I once got a copy of Zadie Smith's new book there and it was signed -- the bookseller was like "Oh yeah she comes by and signs some books every once in a while, she lives in the neighborhood." 😍
Omg... Sweet Pickle Books sounds incredible... I cannot believe a business like this exists in the modern day and age. I need to check this out someday.
I came across The Mysterious Book store last time I was visiting my son in NYC. It was great. I am going there this weekend and this video was perfect timing
Yasss! I’m literally going to NY next week and I am deffo doing this tour 🙌🏼
Love this idea! The stores all sound so cool
The Great Believers is GORGEOUS but gird your heart😂it’s a tearjerker. I think I cried for about half an hour after I finished it.
Such amazing gorgeous unique and incredible book haul Jack thanks so much 😊
Been watching both your channels for a while and I love your videos lol the next time my bf wants to go home to NY I will be taking him along this book crawl 🎉
Please make a Sweet Pickle Books video.
i studied japanese last semester in my uni and i can read his tshirt
Love finding hidden gems and so beautiful and fun ❤
Ugh, that last book sounds like it would WRECK me. Must read it 😂
i can't draw my eyes away from that tilted painting (PLEASE FIX IT)
I read Say You're One of Them by Uwem Akpan years ago - it's a book that's stayed with me and I think of it often and never want to read it again. It was so heartbreaking. I had no idea Akpan had another book!
Also lit crawls are so fun - my friends and I enjoy doing them around our city :)
Simply must go to these bookstores one day. I didn't even think of book shopping when I visited in 2019. Sadly don't live anywhere near new york though
THE GREAT BELIEVERS IS MY FAVOURITE BOOK EVER, enjoy Jack!!!
Omg absolutely most beautiful bookstore in NYC ❤
jack im gonna need you to read demon copperhead and tell us what you think. you’d absolutely love it i can guarantee it
I loved it! Best book from Kingsolver since The Poison Wood Bible, IMO 😊
time to zone out and heal my soul by listening to you rant about books and all that goes along with it
This video is sooooo funnn! I wanna do this with my friends. ❤❤❤
Katie Kitamura! She is a divine, cerebral genius, especially wrt ambiguous emotions. I loved Intimacies! Excited for your review of A Separation. ❤
The great believers is gorgeous can’t wait to read it ❤
wait i’m going to new york in the fall, i’m definitely doing this
saw jack at hay festival but he was eating his dinner on his own but in the staff area (and so was I but in the visitor area) so I didn’t say hi and just moved on with my hay festival schedule. cool to see him in real life but sad times that I didn’t meet him (or have the guts to say hi because I get nervous and also he was eating and I just thought that would be rude, especially as he was in a non-public area) 😢
edit: cause his booktube content is like CRACK to me
Noooooooo you didn't go to Sweet Pickle Books!!!!!! I look forward to the potential video you might make about this bookstore one day 😸
Sweet Pickle Books is an amazing bookstore!
8:23 I think this was featured on Cindy’s vlog as well. Very interesting bookstore.
Jack’s back in what he thinks is bad lighting and background (which it is not) and keeping an eye out for those sirens lol
The "I Could Live Here Forever" by Hanna Halperin synopsis reminded me of Joanna Hogg's "The Souvenir " (2019 film) 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Love The Great Believers! Please speak more about who has the right to tell which story - I have mixed feelings about that topic. Also recommend Intimacies by Katie Kitamura.
I am always curious about books with my first name in them. Lol Should do a series on that. I don't meet a whole lot of Fionas. :)
Nice !
Bluestockings is in LES, king
Hello from British Columbia Canada
🇨🇦🖐👍🚐🚐🛣🌲🌳🖼🖌🎨🏮😎🤴🕶
Please read A Separation soon and give us a review!
honestly the reason i've been saving money to go to New York is because of Friends and Sex and the City and YOU.
Woah 12 seconds haha😊
Has anyone read both of Kati Kitamura's books that Jack mentioned? I read "intimacies" and didn't really enjoy it. There was so much potential in the setting at the court and the topic of interpreting but it didn't meet my expectations, sadly. Wondering wether I should give her other book a try...
I’m literally begging you to do this when you next come to London - I need bookstore recs 🥲
1:42 Wow! I feel like Belle from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ standing on a ladder and sliding across shelves.
new yorkers won today 😭
jack can u please fix the crooked picture frame in the background it makes me go mad 😭
You and me books recently had a fire and are asking for donations on a gofundme on their website!
Quote of the Day: “As long as you can justify it to yourself, it’s fine.”
Do you watch anime?
I really wish you’d change your setting or outift when you do an ad read :) a lot of creators do it and it just helps when the ads don’t apply to us
Do you ever actually read anymore?
He does, we just don’t get to see many reviews:/
He said he’s been in a reading slump 🥹 and I’m right there with him 😭
