We know how great that kid has been for us this season and that injury against girona made him drop his form little bit off . As a madrid fan we knew he would step up at 2nd leg and oh man he did to set up that goal for madrid . Defending was even more impressive from him . Real Madrid and the City attack stopped Haaland. When RM gave Haaland space every once in a while, City ignored him and so between the two, Haaland was a passenger more or less. Pep's refusal/inability to be flexible with his tactics have been a major for City all season, and yet no one wants to talk about it. We concede chances and goals bc of Pep's high line (higher than last year playing wingbacks most of the time as opposed to playing a combo of flat back 4 and overlapping FBs) which has led to City being ranked dead last in the PL for defense against the counter.
    Couple that with Pep's refusal to allow for quick breaks and transitions when chance allows it, thereby taking away some of Haaland's greatest strengths and giving the opposition the opportunity to reset their defensive shape, or worse, full team low block, makes it so much more difficult to score when we need to. This is not a binary. We adjusted our systems last season based on the opposition such as giving Arsenal the majority of the ball and getting them on the counter; allowing RM more possession in their gaff and being tempered only to spring speed and possession on them at home for our 4-0 win over them. Its like that all went out the window and Pep is reverting to type - refusing to adapt and it has been hurting the team all season.
    To add to that, the whole attack with few exceptions, could not hit the side of a barn last night. Would the outcome have been different IF Pep had adjusted his tactics (not just moving a player here or there)? Possibly. But I am pretty sure we would've been able to utilize Haaland more than we did which was basically zero. Apparently Pep forgot everything he shouldve learned last season getting rewarded with the treble. Maybe Pep learns better with the stick and not the carrot????

      @torgeirgimmingsrud2439 Před 13 dny

      Your right, it seems like Pep is incapable of staying loyal to a successful formula. The 4 CB approach from last season would never have let Rodrygo score that first goal, and even if Haaland was used much as a decoy in big games then, too, they didn’t completely forget to fead him as the case have been this season.

      @MCFCTheMadHatter Před 13 dny +1

      @@torgeirgimmingsrud2439 Facts. And you have just added more credence to my point. Why couldnt we play more like that this season against ruthlessly efficient counter attacking teams? Drop the high line a bit and insulate ourselves from forced defensive errors via counters? Yet we didnt all this season. WHy?
      Yet Pep did change things around at points last season depending on the opposition. Yet it seems that concept is totally alien to him this season. Love Pep but this has been very frustrating. Its like he is trying to force innovation for innovation's sake even when the evidence suggest he should not (high line at least)

    U guys are jokers and this Haaland situation has just highlighted the hypocrisy in football. When CR7 went back to Man Utd, the pundits said he had no real impact on the game other than when he scored as if that isn’t the primary responsibility of a striker especially one already past 35. Yet Haaland comes in and only scores and gets like 3 assists in all competitions last season and they all want to blow him. And now when he doesn’t perform because the other team, on one of the rare occasions, shuts him out and exposes the limitations of his game, the pundits are making excuses for him. We live in an era of versatile strikers exemplified by Benzema, Harry Kane, Lautaro Martinez etc and no team exemplifies the need for such a striker quite like Man City under Pep, except of course since Haaland arrived. When Aguero was there, all Pep did was criticize him for the first 2 years to get him to drop deep and play with the rest of the team even tho he was scoring like 30 goals in all competitions each of those seasons. But with Haaland, whose real value to Man City is his marketability, Pep just wants him to stay out of the way of the other players until he has space to power through a goal. These pundits are here talking about he held up the defenders but he’s not a target man, isn’t used as a target man and hates all the body contact a target man has to put up with. He can’t really play with his back to goal and bring his teammates into the game because at his best he’s a glorified poacher in an era that no one is looking for poachers. Without the unbelievable quality around him and the fact that the team create so many chances without him, he wouldn’t score as many goals as he does. Matches like this prove that. One day he will be off to Madrid where the talent around him will make life equally as easy with no real physical defenders to compete with in the rest of the league to really challenge him. And one day someone will ask the stupid question of if he’s a better player than CR7 was.
