I disagree with Monfils because I never see media claiming him to be better than he is, or expecting him to win titles that he can't. A lot of us WANTED him to win more and really establish himself as a top ten, but I always saw people being very realistic with the level he was at.

Exactly ONE thing is overrated about Connors: the most titles record, because he won so many of those in tournaments where he never had to play another top-20 player. Otherwise, he was without a doubt the best player in the world at his peak, managed to play at a high level for longer than any of his peers, and almost guaranteed would have won a calendar year grand slam if he'd been permitted to play the French Open in '74.

Saying that Sampras surpassed Becker on grass in "No time" is really not accurate. Boris Becker is four years older than Pete Sampras. He won two grand slam titles before his 20th birthday and had four grand slam titles by his 22nd birthday (the same number of slam titles that Nadal had at that age.) Boris broke up with his longtime girlfriend at the beginning of 1990 and his mind wasn't focused on the game in the same way that it had been. Becker won 12 consecutive grand slam matches before he lost to Agassi in the semifinals of the 1991 French Open. That's equal to the first half of Djokovic's legendary 2011 season. The guy was one of the best tennis players of his era.

People tend to forget that Kournikova was back in the day one of the most promising players. Yes, she got a ton of money for her looks, but it was not only her looks, she was a junior GS champion, and played Wimbledon semifinals at 15. She was supposed to be one of the next big things with Venus, Serena and Lucic (Hingis was a reality back then). But she was blinded by the fashes and then there were injuries and she became miss double fault and all derailed.
Emma is in danger of being in the same situation. Of course she won a GS (let's be real, a player like Emma would never won a GS back in the 90's or early 00's when a lot of top players fought for the GS) but the impression is that it came too soon and she is not remotely prepared.
And Gasquet probably gives the award. Back in the day he was supposed to be the next big thing. He was going to rival Nadal for years (for some people he was better than Rafa) but that never happened. In my oppinion French federation simply puts too much pressure in their young stars and that don't do them any favours

Gascquet was the teenage sensation before Rafa started showing how unbeatable he was on clay.
I think Gascquet, with his mediocre serve+1 tools was never gonna amount for much in the long run, but the junior circuit was not prepared enough to expose his weaknesses, that's why he usually demolished everybody there with his monster backhand. Once he entered the ATP Tour, reality kicked in and he refused to improve his chops so his career got stagnated.

On the pro ranking Rafa was alwaya ahead but Richard was pretty closer.

I agree with what you said about Raducanu. This was her first full year on tour, and while the US Open championship was partly due to luck, the talent and skills are definitely there. She needs to find the right team and stick with them. I would swap her for Sofia Kenin. In all honesty WTA is seriously lacking consistency. If we are going by the quality, perhaps Iga would make it such a list in couple of years simply because she's been consistent while her contemporaries have not. This is not to take anything away from her talent and achievements this year.

If there would be not wikipedia, who telling us the true with stats , david nalbandian would be the second greatest player of all time, when it comes to federer fans, when they talking about him like if he would be a king or tennis giant something like that.

Regarding Nick he isn't really overrated as some think, he has a great record vs top 10 players, but that doesn't mean if he is serious he would have won multiple slams, he has many weaknesses in his game, his game is majorly relied on serve and he has one of the worst return win% in 2022

Connors losing to incredible players years his junior is the rule rather than the exception. So many have seemed to collectively forget that Federer is 6 years Novak and Rafa's senior. Plus the man made a semi-final run at 39, which no one thought was possible at that point.

David Nalbandian. Realistically, he was far worse than the likes of Tsonga, Berdych, Ferrer etc. but for some reason he seems to get this hero worship from certain fans who claim he is the biggest wasted talent ever / most naturally gifted player who was just lazy etc. In reality, he was a decent top 10 player for a few years who had a great backhand and decent all court ability, but an average forehand, an average serve, and pretty poor movement and athletic ability. At his best, he was obviously still a great player and was even able to beat the best of the best, but he was nothing special and nowhere near the level of the other players mentioned above.

But that are not tales it's the truth, Nalbandián even showed out of shape in tournaments he ended winning like the 2 Masters he won back to back against Guys like Federer and Nadal lol, it was known that tennis wasnt his Main Focus cause usually he was spotted doing ski and Even conducting rally while the season was going on, missing tournaments, not eating propperly spending time in other interests, he basically was Kyrgios before kyrgios without the trashtalk, but actually could deliver some Masters (including atp finals) and his level was clear when he was on, he was really close to be a gs champions and Made semis on the other 3

Court is totally overrated. On top of being a bigot. She cleaned up at the recreational AO of the 60's. The fact that she, unfortunately for the rest of the world, ended up with the most grand slams ever is the only reason anyone ever considers her as much as they do.
Clearly she was an excellent player, but so far less than her record indicates on paper.

Are you guys kidding about Margareth Court being recast? This woman has won as many as 64 Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. In singles alone she has won 24 titles. That's more than Djokovic currently has. No one else has accomplished something like that. In addition, she has won a classic Grand Slam. Roger, Nadal and Djokovic only play singles and still have fewer singles titles than this woman. Margareth is probably the best and most underrated tennis player in the history of the sport. Usually when the best female tennis players are mentioned they are: Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams, and hardly anyone remembers Margareth Court. Besides, she won 191 singles titles. Roger has only 103.

  • @mangstadt1
    @mangstadt1 Před rokem

In my opinion, Rod Laver, Margaret Smith-Court and Jimmy Connors should not be on this list. If anything, I would say that Roy Emerson and Ken Rosewall are "underrated", because we always talk about Rod Laver but then we forget about the other two. Rosewall won 8 slams in the late 50s and early 70s, and was a professional in between. Emerson won 12 individual slams, all in the 60s, and never became a professional (until maybe late in his career, when the Open Era began). Jimmy Connors (or even Roger Federer) should not have to apologise for the fact that his major rivals were several years younger than him. You can only play against whomever is at the other side of the net. If the field of opponents is weak, it's not your fault.
I see some parallels between Carlos Alcaraz and the start of Roger Federer's run of slams back in Wimbledon 2003. It took Federer a while to have serious contenders in Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. There is a lot of talk about Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune, but who knows, maybe the true rivals of Carlos Alcaraz are in their early teens right now.

He's been accurately rated as a walking, jumping, running highlight reel and pure joy to watch. Dimitrov definitely overrated - both in "baby Fed" nickname and "best looking" on tour. He's a talented tennis player, some great highlight shots, cutie pie for sure. But we got Matteo Berrettini and Stefanos Tsitsipas on tour. I mean, get real. Is anyone really calling Margaret Court goat? I don't think so.

I would add two more tennis players to this list. Dominic Thiem. True, Thiem won the US Open, but now he is not even in the top 100 ranking and is unlikely to achieve anything again. The second player is Alexander Zverev. He's a guy who has phenomenal talent, but no mental toughness. I remember him losing a match in AO 2022 to Denis Shapovalov, just because of his weak psyche.
