- Chauncey Billups joins Rachel Nichols, Amin Elhassan and Kendrick Perkins ahead of the 2019 NBA draft to talk about why he struggled so much early in his career with the Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets and other teams before landing with the Detroit Pistons. They then (2:41) discuss who is the better prospect, Ja Morant (presumably going to the Memphis Grizzlies) and RJ Barrett (New York Knicks).

Chauncey lowkey one of the coolest nba dudes
B-B-B-Billups!! Not only cool, also a winner, serious, intelligent and tough.
For everybody love calling people bust
Certain situations can turn your whole career around
Munchino H Hill I think that if someone has to prove to be a bust, they have to at least go to another team with a different play style and see how he will address or react
@@SosaA11I hate we had to include Ball in a trade....Jason Kidd 2.0
@ANTONIO chambers I’m not sure about next season, but I can easily see Lonzo having a 4th-year breakout season like D-Lo did.
@@773d0n Usually busts are guys that had an advantage in school but get to the big boys and fold
Im not completely sold on Ja morant as I am RJ, But my bet is on Garland, Hunter, Zion. Bol Bol will take a few years, but he is definitely worth a pick
@@southernflavamaker me too wish we could have kept lonzo think he turns out to be a greAt pkayer
I think that’s a huge problem in the NBA, teams never give players a chance to develop! If they’re not killing it out the gate they think they’re a bust right away. LOVE YOU CHAUNCEY!
Quite true. Casual fans certainly don't help either.
Agreed. Why they should change the age limit to 21. Asking an 18/19 year old if they can carry a franchise is very silly
I swear they think every young guy they draft would be the next lebron or luka type of player😂
@@joiri9498 some are, some aren't and that's okay
Billups is the clear example of someone that was the best player growing up but never had a real challenge to grow until he got to the NBA... he accepted that challenge and the rest is history. To be better, you have to play against better players.
Who cares,he’s a ring holder now.Thanks Billups for 2004
Ay but my Lakers won one back to back in 2009-10 so 😂🤣
Thank Larry Brown for turning him into a legit point...Before that he was a journey man
Jayson Brown Dude that’s completely irrelevant to the topic at hand .
The process is everything. Bandwagons fans of the NBA only respect the glitz and glamour. Not the dark days. Much respect to Mr. Big Shot⚓
@@treneshaclark4643 We respect the rise from the dark days...Not the dark days itself
rookie chauncey looks like CJ from gtasa lmao

He looks like the short nigga in Jodeci
I don’t see it.
All u have to do was follow the damn train CJ
😂😂wow
Big shot Billups. Dude turned into a monster in Detroit. I watched those games, there wasn't a PG in the league you would want in a big game over Chauncey back then. Seemed like dude hit every shot.
I respect Chauncey for keeping it real
Word.didn't blame coaches or anything.
Most these guys ain’t ready now but they won’t ever say
0:26 world's slowest cross over and him getting ripped 😂😂 they wrong for showing this
Thief in the night
I think someone slipped a xanax in his water bottle before that play.
Yo I looked for someone stating that right away why the fuck was he so slow ? It looked he was the only one in slowmotion on the court
This is why I love the San Antonio Spurs development program for their rookies. As Chauncey Billups said, he needed 5 years at least in order to figure out how to play in the league. Some came in to the league ready, some aren't and ended up as busts. What the Spurs are doing, is play their rookies in the D-League for a full year in their first year, and then play them bit by bit in their second to third year until they figure out the NBA pace. So it would at least take a full 2-3 years for the Spurs rookies to fully contribute, while the veterans keeps them afloat. This worked out for a lot of their players like Cory Joseph, Kyle Anderson, Bryn Forbes, Davis Bertans, Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, etc. Some are exception of course, who played a lot of minutes in their rookie season like George Hill, Kawhi Leonard and of course Tim, Tony and Manu..
0:24 Chauncey with the slowest double crossover in NBA history

Chauncey Billups is one of those special players that comes and wins a championship even if you couldn't see it.
Chauncey’s so humble ❤️
Kendrick Perkins came a long way because I thought he couldn't even talk at one point and only had murder on his mind wen he played ball😠LoL
IT'S SAD THIS IS HOW YOU SEE THIS BLACK MAN YOUR WORDS SAY IT ALL ABOUT HOW PEOPLE LIKE YOUR SELF THINK ABOUT A BLACK MAN , YOU DO KNOW HE WENT TO COLLEGE, I ASK YOU WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HIM ?
lol we all did
alonzo randolph it has little to do with the fact that, most of these ex player analysts are ‘black’ like him. They’re talking about the type of player he was on the court.
Funny we call him stone face in my house. And Kevin looney from the warriors is stone face jr.
@@alonzorandolph609 it's sad u have to bring race into it
In Cole middle school in denver Colorado our teachers would have us do reports and read articles on Chauncey. He was truly an inspiration for the city coming out of CU and being from dogg city.
jeso317 dogg city? Lol
Chauncey Billips is a hall of famer.
Am glad it works out for him
Thanks you. Espn for plugging what channel cus google aint tell me what channel the draft on
He was so great and a great story
I lived in Denver until 2000 but I would see Chauncey at the Parkhill Rec. Center quite a bit. He had a huge buzz about him going to the league as a high school senior. But he was always cool.
King of ParkHill
Damn 😂😂😂
Chauncey used to look like Waldo from Family Matters
Dont do that lol

I hope Billups makes the hof

It's not always how you start.its sometimes the middle or ending for a player.
I went through the same thing in college. I wasn't ready athletically but academically I was prepared.
I was amped when him and Mercer got drafted .

Its difficult to believe my eyes with that double crossover lol it looks like its in slowmo when the crossover starts 😂😂
and he didn't need the double move, he had him with the first move
If billups makes the hof i'm for sure in
This man was on the cover of NBA Ballers Phenom!
My idol
He got traded because Rick Pitino was a terrible coach
Props to Chauncey Billups for being honest about his early struggles. Most of the guys at the top aren’t stars and end up as busts.
Chauncey is 1 of the 50 greatest players of all-time!! I was shocked that he wasn't a 1st ballot hall of famer, I believe he'll go in next year in an absolutely stacked hof class: Him, Kobe, Garnett, Duncan..
I like Chauncey, a lot. But to say he's one of the greatest 50 all time is absurd
@@kd9262 I stand by it. I didn't say top 20, top 30 or even top 40. I have him ranked #42 all-time. His numbers & accolades support that. There are not 50 players better than him in nba history

Chauncey keeping it real...
he was basically p-diddy when he was young
Ata Maden lmaooo I see the resemblance

His tenure with the Timberwolves was a turning point.
I was pumped when the Celtics drafted Billups and totally confused when they traded him.
I was mad about it then - and I'm still mad about it.
Denver’s own
In fairness to Chauncey, he had to juggle between his NBA career and his business responsibilities as the founder of Bad Boy Records. Anybody would struggle to manage both those commitments.
😂
Wow I never knew Chauncey played for the Celtics until now! Wow ...
He beat Jordan and the Bulls on opening night.....fluke

I thought Chauncey only played for Detroit Pistons ,Knicks and sometimes I forget nuggets. I never knew he played for Celtics and Minnesota. Wow! Maybe I forgot about minnesota though

If you had a pc u could play with them now lmfaoo
What’s that song tho
Experts saying the league is guard driven is laughable. It's a wing driven league. Every champion this century had superb wings or power forward.
This true all the best players in the league are fowards
Yeah but the Champions almost always have a star PG that acts as a major if not driving force in acquiring championships (Tony Parker, Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry, Billups). Other than the five I listed, what teams in recent memory have won without an all star point guard save for the Heatles and 2011 Mavericks? It is still a PG driven league when it matters most, the postseason. The best players, I agree with you about but we're talking about ringz, Ernie.

Morant's wingspan is suspect tho
What Chauncey really wanted to say was “Rick Pitino stunted by progress”. I have no doubt that if Chauncey started off with a better coach, he’d been a better player early on. Also getting traded in your rookie season as a number 3 pick can affect you mentally. Chauncey really didn’t start showing signs of progress until he started getting coached by Flip Saunders, Rick Carslie, and eventually Larry Brown.
That’s funny how everybody always like to say that NBA is a point guard driving league but yet only 1 is a top 5 player right know and no point guard did win Finals MVP since 07’ 😂

Chauncey " Carl Johnson" Billups
Give Rj 2 years
Guard driven yet Forwards have won the last 9 finals MVP.
Dirk?
Yeah. that narrative has to change. It makes sense, too, since forwards can guard multiple positions successfully with their size and athleticism. Kawhi can guard 1-4, Giannis can guard 1-4 and sometimes 5. Both are excellent two-way players. Both can pass effectively, and are big and strong enough to play a power game.
PGs can only really guard other PGs, and SGs, if they are great, are still only able to guard 2 positions at best. Have a great forward? He'll be able to guard most of the court, and score.
@@MrGRking I think I counted Dirk. Kobe and Tony Parker were the last guards that I remember won it.
