  • Chauncey Billups joins Rachel Nichols, Amin Elhassan and Kendrick Perkins ahead of the 2019 NBA draft to talk about why he struggled so much early in his career with the Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets and other teams before landing with the Detroit Pistons. They then (2:41) discuss who is the better prospect, Ja Morant (presumably going to the Memphis Grizzlies) and RJ Barrett (New York Knicks).

    This is why I love the San Antonio Spurs development program for their rookies. As Chauncey Billups said, he needed 5 years at least in order to figure out how to play in the league. Some came in to the league ready, some aren't and ended up as busts. What the Spurs are doing, is play their rookies in the D-League for a full year in their first year, and then play them bit by bit in their second to third year until they figure out the NBA pace. So it would at least take a full 2-3 years for the Spurs rookies to fully contribute, while the veterans keeps them afloat. This worked out for a lot of their players like Cory Joseph, Kyle Anderson, Bryn Forbes, Davis Bertans, Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, etc. Some are exception of course, who played a lot of minutes in their rookie season like George Hill, Kawhi Leonard and of course Tim, Tony and Manu..

Also getting traded in your rookie season as a number 3 pick can affect you mentally. Chauncey really didn’t start showing signs of progress until he started getting coached by Flip Saunders, Rick Carslie, and eventually Larry Brown.

    Billups had all the makings of a All-star even as Rook - I was pissed when the worst Coach / GM In Celtics History dumped him after 1/2 a season. How do you draft a kid #3 overall only to trade em 40gms latter ? The damage that he who shall not b named did to the Celts took a decade to reverse. Ainge sure ain’t perfect but to those of us who lived thru dark days He’s Been a godsend

    • @Harker911
      @Harker911 Před 5 lety

      Yeah. that narrative has to change. It makes sense, too, since forwards can guard multiple positions successfully with their size and athleticism. Kawhi can guard 1-4, Giannis can guard 1-4 and sometimes 5. Both are excellent two-way players. Both can pass effectively, and are big and strong enough to play a power game.
      PGs can only really guard other PGs, and SGs, if they are great, are still only able to guard 2 positions at best. Have a great forward? He'll be able to guard most of the court, and score.
