"cuz i'm a man, not a boy. there are things you can't avoid, you have to face them, when you're not prepared to face them."
you have no idea how much this smacked me in the face when i first heard it.
It's the best line of the song. It's beautiful simplicity is quite powerful.
Simple but powerful
I think this is one of the best advice that anyone could receive
That, and 'for to lose I could accept but to surrender
I just wept and regretted this moment' - it's so true but oddly not the way I looked at it before I heard this incredible song.
Me too, way back in 2003 I think
It might have smacked you because it sounds exactly like "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens. That's why he shares a writing credit.
3South brought me here years ago can’t believe it’s been 20 years since that show was on MTV my Youth!!!
They should bring it back
I'm mad it's only one season @@Chevymansilv9908
@@Chevymansilv9908 even if they did it will never be as good as the original.
3-South just brought me here to this amazing song played in the intro. Man I was just exploring MTV’s past and see how awesome MTV was back then
This is the best example of a forgotten gem, Ted Lasso using this was absolute nostalgia for me and such a beautiful way to end the season.
I can hear Father and Son right thro this song
Was just about to write that 👌
I can’t thank goodness!
This entire concept of this album still rings loud to this day. Timeless music. I always thought this song was a tribute to Cat Stevens. It always seemed like a response to Father and Son, as though it were the Son singing back to the father. I thought it was purposely done like this.. I could be wrong. Great music. Great Band.
Actually, your ears are picking up the same similarities which a battle of plagiarism against EMI records (representing FLAMING LIPS) was levied by SONY/ATV MUSIC PUBLISHING (representing Cat Stevens). Apparently, there was a quick and relatively uncontested settlement that occurred where CAT STEVENS now gets 75% of royalties for this song because of its distinct thematic parallels to FATHER AND SON. Here is Wayne Coyne's (front man for Flaming Lips) response/apology for the lawsuit:
"I want to go on record for the first time and say that I really apologize for the whole thing. I really love Cat Stevens. I truly respect him as a great singer-songwriter. And now he wants his money. There was a time during the recording when we said, this has a similarity to 'Father and Son'. Then we purposefully changed those bits. But I do regret not contacting his record company and asking their opinion. Maybe we could have gone 50-50. As it is, Cat Stevens is now getting 75 per cent of royalties from 'Fight Test', We could easily have changed the melody but we didn't. I am really sorry that Cat Stevens thinks I'm purposefully plagiarising his work. I am ashamed. There is obviously a fine line between being inspired and stealing. But if anyone wanted to borrow part of a Flaming Lips song, I don't think I'd bother pursuing it. I've got better things to do. Anyway, Cat Stevens is never going to make much money out of us." Reported by the Guardian April 26, 2011.
Melodically it’s similar , lyrically this song is superior by ah fckn country mile , no fckn contest
legit thought the same thing bro, like the son getting his song out following his fathers melody
You are a genius. thank you!
This is its own song , powerful as fcuk 😍
For me this song is about growing up and gradually accepting the fact that you are not "smart" or "cool", and that you have to "stand up and be a man" instead of indulging yourself with childish fantasies. Such a powerful song everyone can empathize with.
Its honestly a masterpiece the lyrics speak of him not being able to fight and regretting letting him take her and the video shows him fighting and in both he still loses the girl. Which also goes to show no matter what some things just are not meant to happen, accepting the humility that we are only ourselves is one of the biggest obstacles in becoming mature and having the courage and confidence to get what you what you deserve in life.
I love TFL and have seen them live many times in The UK but this is so obviously plagiarised from Cat Stevens Father and Son. Cat won in court and earned 75% of the royalties from this song.
Whatever Yuan, you look super cool
@@chadandcalebsadventures4950 sometimes you lose the fight in winning. Sometines you fight and lose.
But if you don't fight, you lose twice
I am glad others get it.
Thank you, TED LASSO !!! ❤❤❤
This song gets me teary eyed because it reminds me of my own life.
I cry every time I F hear this song 👍🏾
Ah, that's the idea...
Those bass synths are juicier than a piece of bubblicious. ❤️
some of the sexiest base lines ive ever heard. especially when they throw a bunch of reverb on that one single note haha!
The lips are juiciful
Judt like cat stevens 🙃
nice reference is see...
Who is playing that delicious bass? Is that Steven? Or Ivans? Whoever, that is some addictive music!
3 South is what introduced me to this song
Why do I keep seeing people coming to old school vids saying that? So trippy. Just enjoy it?
3 south was such a a good show
Damn you Lasso. Also, reminds me of 3 South.
God I love this era of the band.
I miss the the early 90's songs!
@@prozacpeople
Isnt this one from the early 00s?
@@standinsilence Correct, this is 2002. But I believe the person above you was probably just talking about their favorite era.
The Flaming Lips turned me into a hippie and I couldn't be happier!
After my first Flaming Lips show I was walking out of the venue and I said, I feel really happy. Everyone in ear shot looked at me and smiled.
This was the song that I first showed my girlfriend 3 years ago to introduce her to the flaming lips and she’s been a fan ever since.
I first heard this on Smallville (even have the Talon Mix CD they put out) when I was about 10-11. Now to hear it on Ted Lasso it just adds to the nostalgia and emotions.
THAT'S where I first heard this! It's been driving me crazy for years! Thank you!
The classic theme of 3-South.
I always loved this song, but add it to the Ted Lasso finale and it hits even better.
and following "father and son" made it sweeter.
Yip.
and made me love the show even more, cried like crazy!!!
Ya when it followed the song it ripped off lol
@@jackprottiClearly why they used both songs together.
this is one of those songs that gave me some sort of self-realization that sometimes i have to stand up and fight for myself.
the line, "if i could, i would. but you're with him now, it'd do no good" really hit home for me; if only i realized that sooner.
It's never too late to learn this lesson.
Ppp]p
Yoshimi is the most gut wrenchingly gorgeous Lips album. Fight Test exclaims it.
Shouts goes out to 3 south for this gem
A friend of mine used to play this album all the time and this is the the song that stuck out the most to me. he passed away 3 years ago. RIP Broc. Hope you found some measure of peace.
oh ted lasso, you are so good
listening to this song now as an adult makes me tear up every time…
His voice is so beautiful
If you get a chance to see these guys do it. Such a happy and fun show. Wayne and the guys put on a great show.
3 South MTV 2002.
Shout out to 3 South. My favorite mediocre cartoon.
It’s sooo mediocre but I still watched the whole thing lol
@gonz22 if you recall how Beavis from Beavis and butthead has small spurts of competent intelligence this show in the same way has small spurts of good writing then falls back on poopoo humor because for the sake of plot one of our main characters is a complete infantile moron and I love every fucking second of this dynamic.
I kinda think this is the best song of all time. Also.. Shoutout 3 South.
"Yoshimi..." é um dos discos mais importantes da minha vida. Marcou demais minha adolescência e início da minha jornada adulta; e tudo começou com essa música.
Never knew the song that was the opener for 3-South. Gotta listen to more Flaming Lips.
This is how you start an album
最高です!
締め付けられます😊
3 South showed me this classic
Found the group yesterday
This song should be more famous
I was 18 in 05, I had gone to LA for the first time, meeting this gorgeous half thai, half lithuanian girl at a party my uncle had been invited to. the chemistry was instant, and incredible.
She flew me out a month or so later, and played this hauntingly beautiful song. I was in a trance, she crawled on top of me, and sat on my lap in her place in long beach CA, then blew my mind that night, and for the next few years.
Ill never forget it, or her. Thanks, Kat. You’ll always be the one that got away. Maybe next time around.
Damn that's an awesome story man
Do you still have her number?
Next life man
Great white buffalo
Oh man love this story but want more...how did she get away? Any chance of a second chapter? We all have that one that got away...sliding doors eh? How life could be different
"I thought there was a virtue, in always being cool."
To any young men watching this. FIGHT! There is no honor in giving up. There is honor in fighting even if you lose.
Finally, 18 year after, i can find that wonderfull song. I hear for the first Time, thanks for my favourite TV show Smallville ❤❤❤
the real fight test is whether or not your speakers can handle this at full volume. Two sets of car audio have thus far lost on my count.
Awesome 👍
Lol
Perfect!!!! 🤣🤣
Fact
Lost it when I heard this at the end of Ted Lasso 😢
The TED LASSO finale brought me here 🎉🎉🎉
I cannot fathom hearing this at the end of Ted Lasso
theyve been one of my favorite bands since 2009 and to hear them in mainstream made me so happy
The test begins now
I thought I was smart
I thought I was right
I thought it better not to fight
I thought there was a virtue
In always being cool
So it came time to fight
I thought I'll just step aside
And that the time would prove you wrong
And that you would be the fool
I don't know where the sunbeams end
And that the starlights begin
It's all a mystery
Oh, to fight is to defend
If it's not now then tell me when would be the time
That you would stand up and be a man
For to lose I could accept
But to surrender I just wept
And regretted this moment
Oh that I
I was the fool
I don't know where the sunbeams end
And that the starlights begin
It's all a mystery
And I don't know how a man decides
What's right for his own life
It's all a mystery
Cause I'm a man, not a boy
And there are things you can't avoid
You have to face them
When you're not prepared to face them
If I could, I would
But you're with him, I'd do no good
I should have fought him
But instead I let him
I let him take you
I don't know where the sunbeams end
And that the starlights begin
It's all a mystery
And I don't know how a man decides
What's right for his own life
It's all a mystery
I don't know where the sunbeams end
And that the starlights begin
It's all a mystery
'Cause I don't know how a man decides
What's right for his own life
It's all a mystery
And I don't know where the sunbeams end
And that the starlights begin
It's all a mystery
Mystery
The test is over now
🙏🏼
Did you make the lyrics?
@@AlejandroGarza2024 yes i'm the writer how can you not know that
Because you like it.

I can usually say why a song is so good or at least why I love it. But I can't describe how this song is so great and why it's always made me feel like it does. I can't put my finger on it or explain it. I guess it's all a mystery...
this is me. I cannot explain why this song makes me feel the things it does, but it's been doin it for over 20 years now
Tbe most ultimate feeling of love I,ever experienced, came, after a Flaming Lips concert. Thanks Wayne. It was at the Norva at Virginia Beach. "Point your lasers at Wayne" flashed on the screen and we did. (Laser pointers were handed out before the show) It was 2008ish.
Their music helped shape me into a good person. (By replacing potential bad with good.)
Perfect song to end Ted Lasso with, now that Ted returned to Kansas it's time for him to fight for what he wants.
3 south forever
might have taken a great deal of the verse melody/chords from Father and Son, but the chorus of this song is so memerable
This always reminds me of Mark and Lard on Radio 1. They used to champion the Flaming Lips and play their songs a lot.
What a weird and amazing song
ripped off CAT STEVENS Father and Son
@@joebloggs8636 songs can't sound similar? You do understand how music works right?
@@joebloggs8636 hey you jagoff. Two songs having the same chord progression doesn't ripoff.
3 south. Because I'm old.
Best song off of this album, by far! Ok, not true...most of the album is magnificent!
This still holds true today... nice guys finish last with the girls.
The test begins: now now now now now now now.......
Seems to me, the test is always going, infinitly
Great comment!
Amo esta canción! Todo es genial en ella, la voz, la música, la letra, el mensaje, el video, todo! Definitivamente una de mis favoritas!
This is life. In four minutes...
The chorus is brilliant.
Takes me waaaay back 👌👌

I never thought I would say this, but 3 South brought me here.

This song will be a classic.
Love this song. A song for all men...
kamran102 2019 “Respect and dignity.” Furthermore: (“Respect and dignity!”) • “Respect and dignity, 2019?”
I can't believe how good this song is vs how many people know it. I love this
My toddler digs this album
Shoutout 3South lol. Good ass show.
It sounds like Cat Steven's Father and Son but I love it!
Cat Stevens sued them and now gets 75% of profits from this song
Glenn Ross
I hear it was 1/4 or 25%
Don Monmouth I READ that it was Stevens gets 75% from the song, if reading is better than hearing lol .but that aside, it goes against Cat Stevens image ,but I think its the record companies that own the rights who sue not the actual artist, so maybe Stevens himself gets 25% and the record company gets the other 50% and the Flaming lips get the last 25%
There are loads of songs that sound like others songs and it's odd how only a few few sued
Theresa Ocampo I listened to both and they sound nothing like each other
You don't have to go looking for violence, it will find you. It finds us all.
Stand up for what is right. Be a man.
Makes me feel like a robot that finally understands how to make conscious decisions and starts to question his programming
It's a mystery how this song just appeared in my life when it did. Made life look a bit more 3D
Same.
Never heard of this band before, but these lyrics are so powerful, that you to writing such a great song.
best song ever
Love this BAND
Very good sound. Translating to southern Brazilian Portuguese: baita som. Hugs!
I remember randomly flipping channels to grammy awards (around this song's release) knowing that bob dylan was going to perform. Amazing to see these guy kick off that trio performance, followed by The Avett Brothers, Bob Dylan, and then all of them played in the finale. First time hearing Mumford and Avett bros, so hands one of my fav performances. Probably the only performance at the grammys where the talent actually played instruments and sang
20 years ago, so much has happened since
one of the best damn hip hop tracks of 2003
For me, this song goes out to an old b.f. who I later understood regretted the end of our relationship. How would I have known that when he never stood up or mentioned anything about it to me, nor did he fight for us to stay together. We were both musicians - & I loved that, but we were very young still in highschool...
If you loved him you would have known
Not only is this song similar to Father and Son by Cat Stevens. But both songs appear in the final chapter of Ted Lasso. Is incredible.
It's as if No Vaseline by Ice Cube and Brick by Dazz sounded in the same episode
Regret about not fighting is a pretty hefty regret.
+Rory R in some cases one must fight

It sticks with you
It's all a mystery
@cloudyyo if you don't stand up for yourself no one will! You did the right thing to do!
This is the one. The one I really like
this music always perfect I think the voices like it too

Eu me apaixonei por essa banda mas essa música em questão sei lá, primeira vez que eu ouvir me passou uma vibe muito foda e qnd li a tradução, ela me ajudou em um momento difícil.
My heart breaks every time I hear this song. And then I listen again

It does sound similar, different instruments, different tempo, but similar. I can see why homie sued. Both great songs.
