Addendum: You can turn on a click-track (metronome) by pressing Function + BPM. This cycles through sync modes, which include an audible sync-click on the beat. There are 6 sync modes, 0 being the one you will want to return to when you're ready to play without a click again.
Sorry about the strange noises in the VO, still getting used to my new lav microphone.

I've just ordered the 20 and 28 after like a gazillion years of watching these CZcams videos and I think I might just explode of excitement.
haha! i understand that feeling
Dude, since I found your channel I have noticed how much time and effort you put into all your videos. Just wanted to say that and just keep going with the videos. Your channel is going to blow up soon haha. Cheers man
His channel did blow up haha
6 videos at the same time?! This is certainly the best human manipulated channel on youtube ;)
1:06 Kokiri Forest bruh?
Pizzaman Gargatuloth came to the comment section to say that. You beat me to it.
you turn the metronome on/off with glide + bpm
1:06 saria's song!
You read my mind
No shitting, got the arcade one today, my friend and i played around, no idea what we were doing, and he made the same three notes. Now i watch this and im spooped
Spastmatiker haha, it's just F A and B!
It speaks!!
Great video :) I actually got the Robot last week, and didn't realize you could have a sequenced sound, and then jam with a different one on top of that. I learned!
yeah! that's one of the things that makes it really standout.
I think that's why it's my fav at the moment. I got some videos up if you wanna hear some examples of PO-28 being used by itself for a track
theycallmejpj I love your PO-28 Robot album!
This has been more than just informative; this has been more helpful than the manual was! Thank you.
Did anyone else here Saria's Song at 1:06?
yes, i was just thinking that
love the fact you get straight in and quickly explain the features.. awesome video
Thanks for narrowing down a potential collection to just one choice.
'6 new videos from Red Means...' I love you man!!
a human? where's my robot overlord?!?!?!
cool vid.
Janiel Martell it's actually a program called realistic_voice.exe
So if PO 28 stands for "Pocket Operator", the OP 1 must stand for "Operator Pocket"!!! I figured it out, Teenage Engineering. You can't fool us.
Alex Diersing more like overpriced
@@Reza-hq6bq XD you're right! I mean 1000$ for a synth, you better get free lifetime warranty
SolidKeys, $2,300 in my country bro
These POs are way better than a OP1
@@Capta1nFaz not sure about this one xd
pretty gosh darn cool
you're pretty gosh darn cool
beeeeep, Thanks for the great tutorials Jeremy ! I'm getting one of these thanks to you !
I don't even know how to use these things but I love these videos.
I have 6 of these BUT I WILL NEVER STOP REWATCHING
I will never understand how to do this, but I love watching the videos :-)
At least this one has a *red* button for recording >_>
lol
its the cover not the drum machine
I got one after seeing this, and am totally happy with it! thanks bro!
These videos are really cool. Hope you get to review the po-32 :)
I already have a po-32 vid in the playlist!
Found it. Thank you :)
Great demo, super excited for this one to arrive
I just bought one of these but I can immediately see that it will be sitting in my drawer as I don’t have the patience for this.
I watched this before buying one,
I'm watching this after buying one,
And I'm gonna watch it again after getting it.
And then I'm gonna watch it again when you get yours and watch it again and click your link to your magnificent creation.
The sound change issue at 5:23 ... my PO-28 also does this. I think it is a software bug :'( Am I right or it is just some weird feature? How to handle this?
Balázs Szórádi i have the same issue :((( not sure why. i just got it also
Iam so Happy with the Robot. So much fun to Jam! Thanks a lot for this video, i couldnt find out how to change the lower Sounds but now i now :) my favorit combo: SUB, Tonic, accarde & Robot ofcourse 😍
You're gonna get me to buy like all of these damnit
Has the rhythm po12 and street fighter po133 and use them well, this robot is confusing as the sounds seem to change as it's playing, it's like I just added effects. Oh and also when I hold the sound button to change sound two lights are lit - i.e. if I press 1, 1 and 9 have lights. Wondering if my Robot is defective?
2 light up cos its the same sound, one a higher pitch than the other. Look where it says high and low down the left side
Mines changes sounds for no reason too.
1:06 That little bit of Zelda
This was a really good video! Thanks!
great videos, inspired me a lotkeep the great work up!
2:17 to 2:24 is just so amazing sounding
Thanks so much for you videos! A friend of mine got the PO-20 yesterday and I want one PO to jam with him. After watching your videos I think the robot will be my weapon of choice. Also the sub sounds pretty interesting, which one would you suggest?
Robot is great!
Both.
Thanks for these vids - great stuff!
So interestingly enough, I came here after just getting mine and noticed that mine also doesn’t live record right. Even when setting the bpm to 60 I can’t for the life of me hit it on the down beat when recording which I have no problem doing on the arcade. My unit also has a weird issue where when chaining patterns, it always plays the first pattern twice. Apparently this is an issue with the Robot but it’s been happening for a while so it’s sort of a bummer that I got one even after years of it being identified.
All in all I think I’m a bit disappointed with this one. I LOVE the arcade and am able to make some sick songs in there thanks to the polyphony available. This one just seems too limited or more designed for live play rather than make a complex song like the arcade can. The fact that it also has this weird beat and pattern issue just soured the thing for me a bit :(
Fantastic
Wow mass upload!
no reason to string all these out over weeks... better for people who want to know about them to be able to check them all out at once.
That's a golden move, man. Hope your sub count is growing steadily these last few weeks? The videos keep getting better.
Dude thank you so much for doing this. When I checked my subs I was like "No effing wayyy". Would you recommend purchasing only one of these? Or would you pair it with another calculator. I was thinking PO-12 and PO-28.
As a standalone I would suggest the PO-28 or the PO-20.
the PO-28 is the best if you only want to buy one initially
he is actually talking :O
So I just got the PO-128 mega man and had a bunch of issues with my note quantization when live recording. Came here to see if I had a faulty unit or if that's just how the 28s are. Seems you have the issue here too. Really disappointing that they would make an updated 28 but wouldn't fix the quantization. Was honestly hoping mine was just faulty.
Where did you get the silicon cases that have matching accent colors to the different pocket operators?
Thanks.
Great video! Did you ever figure out why the baseline you played didn't enter correctly? That seems kinda worrying.
+dudewithtude42 I assume it was user error
@9:10 you had Castlevania II going there
Do you have any coupons for this I would love to buy this as a gift
How could I choose different sounds for sequencing in the micro drum machine?
Hey I really want to buy one of these to make songs around town. Should I get the PO-20 or the PO-28 for on the go jamming?
both are good. a lot of people start with the po20
Love your videos. Is it difficult to use the PO's with the covers on them? I rely on the LED's quite a bit, and I imagine it would be difficult to navigate without them. Or can you see the LED's through the cover?
It was an issue with my recording angle, not the case. Check it: imgur.com/l6kJEyO
Awwww! Sweet! Will be getting the cases now. Thanks. BTW your tutorials were a big help in discovering these addicting lil monsters!
Can you record both melodic lines or do you have to play the second one live?
Live on the PO-28, but you can also sequence both melodic tracks on the PO-128
Are these usable, if you want to jam to the sounds you created, with a (bass-)guitar? Or is the one key you have too limited to play along something more complex than a cmajor-scale? ;)
I want to have the opportunity to use it to create bass lines and to do backing tracks for my electric-bass jams (I'm really into these lower freqs :D)
Would you recommend the robot or the sub for this?
Thanks!
The Robot and the Sub are actually setup pitch-wise slightly differently. I can't remember the exact scale, but the Robot bucks the trend that the rest of the POs set with melodic scale elements.
A C-major scale gives you access to A minor and elements of E minor and D minor, so you can some wiggle room.
That said, I don't know if I would necessarily recommend the POs for backing track stuff to play "real" instruments with. I think you may find them too limiting.
hey man, the sub can do the whole chromatic scale, but it is awkward to program as initially you only have C Major scale, but using the FX you can raise a note by a semitone. so you have to program, play it, activate write mode during playback, and hit FX +15 on each step you want to raise
the robot has the same notes plus a G sharp, ie A B C D E F G G#. this gives you the 7 modes derived from C major (like the sub), along with A harmonic minor, D blues scale, A minor bebop scale, plus half a dozen pentatonics.
however, as someone who plays bass and guitar, I think you would get way more use out of a looper pedal if you just wanna do improvised jams over riffs, grooves, and chords (if you haven't got one already). I use a ditto looper. they're cheap, very simple, infinite overdubs, and loop can be up to 5 minutes. if you wanna get into low frequency stuff, you could combine it with an octave pedal. I like the BOSS OC-2, tracking is very good, and if you turn the dry signal all the way off and just have the sub-octave, you get a very nice keyboard synthy sound
theycallmejpj Solid advice!
this is rad as hell
I want to put them on my guitar strap, hook them up to a wireless system and into a seperate Amp or straight to the PA so I can mess with them live
jeremy, where did you get that special PO-28 case? the only cases i found on TE’s website are generic single-color ones with numbered buttons
They stopped making them unfortunately
the wizard strikes again!
oh dear... why i have a weird feeling, disliking the screen turn that way with this "pro" case on.
And why does it look like the screen is getting pushed when he's clicking the buttons, if you know, does this happen with the silicon case only?
Because I have one but doesn't look like the screen is getting pushed
Can I cancel 1 slot in sequencer and mąkę 15 step sequencer. I would love to make rythms on 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 on just 1 preset. Is it possible? Am I missing something? If not, what pocket operator allows me to do this?
Hey, I have a question. I actually have this PO and it is my favorite!!! I was wondering if you know a Synthesizer that can give me this repertoire of sounds using a MIDI besides an OP-1. A Roland JU-06 maybe? Hopefully, you can help me here.
The robot is very simple and chiptune in it's timbres. You would want something with a nice big square want to start your programming from. Something with a bitcrusher effect would be cool too. I would suggest maybe an Ultranova.
9:09 Castlevania II?
Would you say this could make a boop sound similar to that of a checkout in a store?
What brand/model is that cutting mat?
+Tokyo Kill it's an Alvin
I can't decide between the po-20 and po-28! Which one is less restrictive in terms of playing and which one creates more complex song? I feel like I could do more with the po-28 but the p-20 has chords and loads of other things! Any advice?
both are great starters. a lot of people go for the 20 for their first.
Im thinking about the 20 too, the chords are a real selling point for me, as well as the side chain effect!
i just sequenced my first psytrance rhythm track on this thing xD
upload it! i'd love to hear it.
❤❤❤
do you need the case to use this nice little thing or is it just to protect it?
you don't need it, but it does make it nicer to play
okay thanks for the fast answer :D
So which is your favourite. If you had to pick one?
33!
I have a scarlett, I want my pocket to sound in my speakers, what kind of cables do I need?
Good morning and thanks!
8th inch to 1/4 inch trs cable
@@RedMeansRecording My drum pads don't sound good, they sound like noise. What would happen? will it be any effect?
Anyway to have sustain in the sequencer?
I haven't watched the others yet, but isn't there a way to string all of them together?
yep, they sync
yup sure do.
Это же "Ну погоди!" волк яйца ловит )))
one word : ridiculous!
why does your cover have cool icons
Which PO would you recommend for making casual laidback hiphop beats?
Do you just want to make beats, or do you want tones as well?
Red Means Recording Being able to do both would be great, but I think beats and bass are slightly more important than tones.
+MagicPutty The Rhythm one is the most beat oriented and you can step sequence the bass note it has to get rudimentary basslines.
Red Means Recording Thanks man!
This has been said a lot of times, but I just discovered your channel and you have super solid content - you deserve more views. I'd watch your stuff over those 'HEY GUYS WHATS UP TODAY WE'RE GOING TO...' videos anytime.
Question though: You inspired me to get one of these Pocket Operators, I'm looking for a standalone device at first, and I want to get as close to this sound: czcams.com/video/SF58Lsvqg5E/video.html as possible, even though I realize you'll need more than just one Pocket Operator to make songs like those.
Which one should I get?
Thank you for the kind words!
To pull off synthwave you're going to need drums, bass, lead, and pad. That means the Pocket Operator Rhythm, Sub, Arcade, and Robot.
You're welcome, thanks for the fast reply.
I see a lot of people that say the Arcade is the most fun as a standalone device, but the Robot seems to appeal to me a bit more, because of its ability to play over sequenced bits you made, if I understand correctly. The Arcade has no function like that, right? Any recommendation on which device I should get first?
The Arcade is a really popular first choice. I personally think if you like the Robot, go for it. It's one of my favorites and definitely one of the most "playable"
CAN THE PO-28 ARPEGGIATE PROPERLY??
I like Clyde too
Ah the Mr robot font.
how do you get a blank pattern? when I hold do pattern all 16 have lights above
On the po 33 its holding down rec and pattern and then the pattern number you want to clear
In this it should be the glide button
Anyone know how to make the bass octave lower, it happened once on accident to me, and I noticed it happened on this video too
Santiago Cueto you have to go into write mode and hold a button for a step that already has a note on it, then turn knob A to change the pitch :)
I can't decide between Arcade or Robot. They sound familiar but not completely. HELP.
Arcade is a favorite first one for most people.
Your power or raping my subbox can't go against the Pink Season
sounds exactly like a game boy.
pretty much sucks that you can't patternsequence the notes that you want, you only have access to 8 tones in two octaves, so no c# d# f# a#
I picked up the PO28 a few weeks ago, used off of ebay. Trying to plug in a drum beat and I see that all 16 sequence patterns are already used... Do you know if there is a way to clear the patterns, or remove parts of each sequence? Have tried asking TE but no luck.
Great video by the way, really shows off how nifty this thing is
Yes, you can clear any pattern while on that pattern by pushing Glide+Pattern.

Thank you so much!
I just get this PO and totally desapointed, its most useless one, as additional this sound change issue :(
How can you delete something on the po28
www.teenageengineering.com/guides
which of these operators would you Pick, if you couldnt buy all at once?:)
The Arcade (PO-20) or Robot (PO-28) would be my picks for a single.

you have a voice??? o:
Robot is theeee worst of the four that I own. Has a mind of its own. Switches the sounds / pitches to where I have no idea what it’s doing. It makes cool sounds but I have no way of programming them to stick where they’re supposed to be.
Which one would you recommend purchasing? I wanted to get my feet wet with these and am unsure which is the best to start off with. Thanks!
@@TD-kb4ts Hi, I own a bunch of them and the KO33 is the cream of the crop. It's super versatile. If I could keep only one, it would be that one. It can do so much. The new 30-series (KO, Tonic, Speak) are noticeably better than the lower versions. The Tonic is a fun one too, probably my 2nd one to recommend - it's a drum machine so it might be more intuitive than the KO sampler.
I know what song you started to play.
looks like a nightmare to learn
ebay. 100$ CDN... going for it. PO #2 :)
kaboom
turn off your auto white balance
+sethraptor no
ok you don't have to I guess
PO-28 is a joke - no clue why they would release something that is barely usable. Certain low sounds won't sequence/play back, drum sounds end up being sequenced when you clearly have other sounds selected, etc. After using the majority of others, I'm surprised they would even release this piece of shit as-is.
Jack Davis it is a bit odd compared to the others. my factory reproduces written rhythms perfectly about 80% of the time, while my robot probably does so about 40 or 50%. still fun to play with and you can always turn the tempo WAY down to enter notes! and of course you can still enter notes by step too - but i got my robot with a busted screen (at a discount) and for some reason you don't get to hear which pitch you're selecting when you edit it so there's a lot of trial and error there.
i agree with you tbh, it’s my second po and i’m honestly disappointed with it
A lot of bla bla
where did you get the case with the different buttons?
they don't make those anymore.
