    Thanks Whitney! All of the fitting info you shared already answered my questions! My biggest issue with fit is that extra fabric in the inseam area. I can't wait to finish this pair of pants to see how well they're going to fit! I look forward to the next video. Have a great day!

    Glad to see this tutorial. I just made a mock-up of this pattern, and I find the written instructions nigh-on incomprehensible.
    I was thinking of changing it to a side closure so that I can finish up a pair of these trousers for my daughter-in-law in time for Christmas.

    Thank you for this sew along! I'm in desperate need of work appropriate pants now that we're slowly getting back out there, but I am wayy too scared to try anything that's not a knit pant. Glad I dug through your sew alongs and found this! It'll help boost my confidence as I attempt to make my first pair of trousers! :D

    Hi Palmer and Pletsch pant book worth aquiring. Use the book this morning on daughters shorts problem. Fold of fabric horizontal at the crotch, I was thinking length. Nope, needed to let out inner thigh and outer thigh at crotch depth not enough room, fold of fabric disappeared. Loving the sew along.😊

    Taking about driving yourself crazy over fitting pants... I’ve done exactly that over 2 years until I have realized what you said about not needing to be perfect. I have used exactly the same pattern and realised that just couple of changes gives me a very decent fit.
    Anyway, love your videos and you relaxed style of delivering, it is so refreshing.❤️

    I’m guilty of overfitting. I have the pants for real people book. It isn’t the best laid out but okay with other resources. I think I’m just really fussy when fitting trousers. I need to take Suzy Furrer classes. Thank you for the sew a long, I have the pattern and will make later in the year. Yay for you being a Minerva craft blogger.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      Overfitting is so easy to do. Suzy Furrer has great drafting classes and then Linda Lee and Pati Palmer have some great fitting classes on there as well.

    • @audreywring1920
      @audreywring1920 Před 5 lety

      Did the Blueprint class, approx 3 years ago, created a block and some jeans, still wear them today. Class is good in creating block. Fitting content sparse. Expect to make many test garments and then run with it. Make sure you include 1 inch fitting seams on your outer and inner thigh in the fabric you choose to complete your trousers. Bought a burda pattern and compared crotch curves a year later. I laughed when I realised I spent many hours altering my block to fit and created the Burda crotch curve. Enjoyed the learning process though.

    Hi Whitney, I have just come across this video even though it's a few years old. I'm so happy to have found it-- I have this pattern in 20W-28W sizes. I've never made pants before and eager/scared to try. My waist and upper hip are almost the same size; my upper hip/tummy area is my largest measurement; my hips 9" below my waist is 5 inches smaller than my high hip. Would I still use the lower hip measurement to select the pattern size? I hope to hear from you, and thank you for this tutorial. I'm a new subscriber.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 2 lety +1

      I would use lower hip measurement to pick a size and then do a full belly adjustment to get the rest to fit properly. I have a very similar issue!

  • @carolynpierce6694
    @carolynpierce6694 Před 5 lety

    This was great! I’m going to attempt a pair of pants after about 20 yrs! Do you cut out with a rotary cutter or scissors? I’m interested in buying Palmer Pletsch interfacing when available. What length stitch do you use? Do you baste in the seam allowance? Thanks!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      I use a rotary cutter, but either is fine. I sew with a 2.5 stitch length typically and we’ll go over which seams to baste in tomorrow’s video!

    Question- if you have a large tummy, would you suggest selecting a pattern size based on waist, or sticking w/ hip measurements? It's tough to fit for apple shapes!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      I would always pick a size for pants based on the hip measurement and then adjust for the waist (you could always do a full tummy adjustment). It will fit you much better!

  • @robynjury4403
    @robynjury4403 Před 5 lety

    Hi. Just a fitting question, on all the measurements I come out as a clear 14 except the crotch where I am way bigger - my measurement is 16.5 inches. I have made other trousers / pants and usually end up scooping out the curve at the front piece and back piece to adjust for my shape (I think they are the round pubis and low bum adjustments.....such unfortunate terms....) -so I was thinking I would stay with the average 14 pattern pieces but make this extra crotch adjustment. I will muslin this too first - but just wanted to see what you think.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      Yes. If those are normal adjustments then definitely do those since those can’t be adjusted in the basting stage!

    do you have to add pockets to this pant?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 2 lety

      It’s a slash pocket so the pocket is cut away from the front pattern piece. However, it’s just a matter of putting the back pocket piece behind the front piece to create the full front and then you could easily omit the pockets!

  • @dominikasantiago1591
    @dominikasantiago1591 Před rokem

    Is there a way to make this without the pockets

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před rokem

      Definitely! You would just need to cut out the front with the pocket facing behind the pocket cut out. Does that make sense? If you lay the pocket pieces how they would be sewn, you'll have a complete front instead of the front with the pocket and then the pocket pieces. Let me know if that is confusing!

    Hi Whitney. Been looking forward to this class. I do have a question right off the bat. The pattern says they measure the hip at 9in . I am between 7 and 8( probably 71/2 ) . How would you suggest I go about altering this and when?

    • @dianedoherty3655
      @dianedoherty3655 Před 5 lety

      Barb Gallenberger shorten at the hip line all around horizontally.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      Are you a more petite person? Chances are you might just need to shorten the rise an inch. I would just use your full hip measurement (no matter where it falls) to pick your size. This pattern has 1” seam allowances on the side seams which makes tweaking at the end (I’ll do this in tomorrow’s video) really easy.

    • @barbgallenberger7482
      @barbgallenberger7482 Před 5 lety +1

      I am 5’4” but I wouldn’t call myself petite anywhere else😂. Most of my problem is in the stomach mostly because of bloating also.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety

      Barb Gallenberger 😂 I get that! You might just be a bit shorter in the rise, I’m average in the rise (although I’m only 5’2”, but I have a REALLY short upper body). Fitting can be very weird!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, but I would chose a heavier bottom weight linen that will hold its shape and provide modesty since the trousers fit fairy close through the hips and bum!

    S8056 has a curved waistband that complicates the fitting process. The shaping is divided between two pieces, unnecessarily. A straight waistband with all the hip shaping in the darts and seams would be easier to fit.
    The 3 different bum shapes are good, but even the curvy size, has a back seam that is too short for me.
    But I can deal with that. I have been fitting my bum for 30 years.
