Our Vedic system was also like this.... Parents used to go to Vanaprastha Ashram after their son's marriage. During Vanaprastha, they would regain their health, practice devotion and knowledge, study and travel, serve ascetics, do social work, and sometimes visit home for 1-2 days. Therefore, the son and daughter-in-law would respect them a lot. In the last phase of life, they would take Sannyas. In this way, we had not joint families but small families. According to Vedic religion, an 8-year-old and a 60-year-old should not stay at home. That is, from 8 to 25 years old, they should stay in Gurukul, and 60 is the last age when a person should leave the householder's life and not live with the son and daughter-in-law.

I stayed with my in inlaws for 3 months after delivery. Itna zeher bhar diya unhone zindagi me unn 3 mahino me. Unki reality mere samne aa gayi. That could be because she may have different brand endorsements which may want her to show up as a self confidant woman rather than showing up as a आज्ञाधारक bahu. Parents don't have responsibility to pay for the college education for kids, you may give it as an interest free loan to your kids and they should pay it back from their salary. So that way parents have saving for old age. If they really want to help, then make it maximum upto 50% of contribution. Other 50% must come from son or daughter. Here in Canada, kids take student loan for college education. India will be on same path soon.

हमारी वैदिक व्यवस्था भी ऐसी ही होती थी .... माता पिता अपने पुत्र के विवाह के बाद वानप्रस्थ आश्रम के लिए चले जाते थे ... वानप्रस्थ के दौरान वो अपने स्वास्थ्य को वापस मजबूत बनाते थे, भक्ति और ज्ञान की साधना करते थे, अध्ययन और भ्रमण करते थे, तपस्वियों की सेवा, सामाजिक कार्य करते थे और कभी-कभार 1-2 दिन के लिए घर आते थे, इसलिए बेटे बहू भी उनका बहुत सम्मान करते थे ... जीवन के अंतिम प्रहर में संन्यास ले लेते थे ... इस तरह हमारे यहाँ संयुक्त परिवार नहीं बल्कि छोटे परिवार ही होते थे। वैदिक धर्म के अनुसार 8 साल का और 60 साल का घर में नहीं रहना चाहिए ... यानी कि 8 साल से 25 तक गुरुकुल में रहे और 60 वो आखिरी उम्र है जब व्यक्ति गृहस्थ-आश्रम को छोड़ दे और बेटे बहू के साथ ना रहे ...
Our Vedic system was also like this.... Parents used to go to Vanaprastha Ashram after their son's marriage. During Vanaprastha, they would regain their health, practice devotion and knowledge, study and travel, serve ascetics, do social work, and sometimes visit home for 1-2 days. Therefore, the son and daughter-in-law would respect them a lot. In the last phase of life, they would take Sannyas. In this way, we had not joint families but small families. According to Vedic religion, an 8-year-old and a 60-year-old should not stay at home. That is, from 8 to 25 years old, they should stay in Gurukul, and 60 is the last age when a person should leave the householder's life and not live with the son and daughter-in-law.
