Documentary telling the story of dancer Rudolf Nureyev's rise to fame in the years before he defected from communist Russia and began his long stage partnership with the British ballerina, Margot Fonteyn.
Through the vivid memories of those who knew him best, this psychological portrait tracks the origins of his rebellious character, his complex personal relationships and his artistic genius. It features previously unseen footage of his early triumphs in Leningrad, filmed by a German teenager with whom he fell in love, and who encouraged him to leave his homeland.

Rudolf Nureyev time was well before I was born, but the beauty of his art transcends time. I only wish he was alive and I could watch his ballet live. Thanks so much for sharing these magnificent videos of his life and his art.

in my opinion rudy was a far better dancer in his kirov time ,after life was too easy for him in west.this short clip of laurencia is fantastic.
i read several biog on him...it seems that ever since he defected he was pretty miserable most of the time because he was missign his Russian side where he could never go back again w/o being arrested ....this made him frustrated - living in teh west was like love and hate
@@AT-cy7im absolutely agree. I defected from a different eastern block country and it is a love and hate situation. I was telling someone I was dating that I was planning to eventually go back and subconsciously could not commit fully. I was doing it for twenty years. Recently, I finally moved back and during the corona, and now I feel like an alien all over again thinking about the country I defected to and whose citizenship I now have. It is very traumatic to leave without an option to go back freely.

I'm divided between the professional and the spiritual, I miss so many of the moments from back home...I hope you manage to cop with the change and I hope you manage to find the old affections

Yes, he was far clean and effortless in this Laurencia. His problem in west might have been he had no Kirov coach to tell him no and he had to live up his reputation of the great Russian dancer,

It looks as if he wasn't gay until Teja Kremke seduced him. Nureyev himself said that Kremke was his introduction to homosexuality. But Kremke was very odd, and died young having married a child bride from Indonesia.

I’m almost 66 and I was lucky enough to have seen him perform.....I was in love back then and I am rediscovering him now. I would have loved to be a friend in his life.....totally amazing person.....

Darn, I cannot watch the part one and two of this, it says that it is blocked because of copy rights in my country. One has extract from PBS and the other from Universal something and even though it exists multiple times, they whipped it all out, It sucks.

the first time l saw him live in 78 he was no longer so young ,but also not so old ,was 40 but imo already no longer good dancer ,but also in the first films in west he was already a worst dancer than in this short clip ,how could happen a so quick changement is a mistery.

@@shaunm.2738 he was far worse shape than others at the same age ,for exemple l also saw vasiliev and valeri panov at 40 and both were far better shape than him ,that surely danced too much probabily not less than the double of any other top dancer and this was not good for his body

These women are my Ballet family. When we talked to them about the story related to you about Valentino, and the tea and the old woman dieing. William Fike. She said, "Do not talk to us about that we will kill Betty Fike and Mangie ( Marilyn Monroe) We had to wait until BillY Elliott to be brought back. 1940's The Ballett was the first source of entertainment income from a public attendance.. The Jews were very involved in the Ballet. Only men were Jews. The women were Arabs and married Jewish men and could not be Jews. Women Jews came much later in History. We brought the women back in this documentary when BillY Elliot was performed in Prague. Many Jews were killed in 1949 after I was murdered and years passed as I was made into and infant that would grow in height with my age. It was a first. John F Kennedy was making me and this old woman had hid out and was an excellent arms maker. So she came to see me in Dallas when I was of age. I had to bring my paperwork with my appointment for Circumciscion or she would do it herself! NMVXV
