Modeling a Chess Set That Works in 2D and 3D

  • In this video we'll explore an idea I've had for a while: A chess set that will work in 2D and 3D at the same time! We'll use the boolean modifier to intersect two different chess designs, and merge the two designs using forced perspective.

    Thank you so much for all the kind comments on this video. I'm so glad you liked it! So here are some good news: Since the 2D chess elements used in this chess set are licensed under GPL 3.0, I have to release my 3D model under that same license. You can download the project file here (free download, no login required): patreon.com/posts/59047159 (This means if you use this design, you have to license it under GPL 3.0 too!)
    Thanks for watching!

    This can definitely implement a more modern feel, due to the fact that there can just be a camera overhead at physical chess tournaments, it would be so very convenient for hosts and live streams. Wouldn't even need the 2d game view, since the set does that job! This can very easily monopolize the competitive chess board sales. To be honest, I want one.

    if you wanted to make this physical you could have glass holding the floating pieces and making a better horseshape without compromising the illusion, for example the horse with a cut off nose, you could have a glass piece completing his nose and it wouldn't interfere with the illusion.
    or you could've made a set where the negative space (the cut parts) were glass, so you'd retain the physical shape of the initial meshes but keep the illusion (the illusion might not look perfect) but you'd at least keep the ergonomic shapes.
    another cool idea could be to make the cut parts glass, the and remainder parts a glow in the dark material thingy, could look cool.
    This was quite the 5head idea tbh, really nice video and you made the the sculpting look so darn easy, feels like you know the program in and out

      Speaking about glass, although this is most likely going to be too difficult, I would like to see the entire piece where the empty spaces is glass while the fill piece is the actual piece. But... I feel like both black and white should have used the "filled" models (the models that are being used for black). Just make the color of the pieces black and white, but don't give them a different shape... Right now the "not filled in" or "inverted" pieces look like a failed 3D print i.m.h.o.

      @armata_strigoi_0 Před 2 lety +13

      Yeah, I thought exactly the same thing, the infilled models are more aesthetically pleasing overall. I also thought he should keep the knight facing the same way, because it's upside down from black's perspective. Would be interesting to actually attempt printing these, it'd probably require some manual tweaks to the model but it'd be cool to see them in person.

      @armata_strigoi_0 Před 2 lety +1

      @@SporkNotFork Yeah, I know it's correct from the 2D perspective, but that only works if you have the benefit of software that automatically switches the colours from both people's perspectives. If you were to play with them in three dimensions, especially real life, you'd expect the images to align with the direction you yourself were facing. It would feel odd to play with them all being upside down on your side of the board.

    Because of how these were made they fill each others missing parts so in theory you could just slot these together for either easy cleanup or if you want a full black set. If you also have just like a thin transparent base so all of the piece is connected I think that this could actually be a really widely used chess set.

      Can't really slot them together. They still share the same exterior outline (which is why all the Bishops and Kings have the same circles on top).
      What would be cool is to fill the bases with acryllic. Stays transparent from above AND gives the pieces weight at the base for that satisfying feel when moving them.
