    To me Berserk is very eerie in the sense that I have never experienced a work of fiction that was THAT hopeless, and yet instills inside me more hope than any other fictional or real life work/event or person.

    Guts deserves all the love in the world. I hope that the series ends with him living the rest of his life in peace and doesn’t have to fear going to hell when he finally passes away.

      I used to be a therapist, and worked specifically with clients with PTSD; getting extra certifications to do so. This was immediately how I read the scene. He's already in panic-mode looking for her when he comes across this scene that shares a perverse resemblance of their old life, and boom, he's triggered. He's clearly been "losing his mind" amid the constant mental and physical torture he's going through, and this was like a tip-off point. The moment he cognitively realized what he was doing, he was able to pull away with instant regret.

  • @ShepherdsCreek
    @ShepherdsCreek Před 6 měsíci +58

    I had a hard time understanding his actions here for a long time. It wasn't until I was going through the postpartum period where I was incredibly sleep deprived, feeling very alone, overwhelmed, hungry, and very touched out (from having a baby on me constantly). I was not the best version of myself going through there and I did a lot of things I am not proud of. We also got a puppy while i was going through that and I was on my own dealing with all of it most of the time for the first year after my daughter was born. I was not a good dog owner. I was cruel to that poor puppy. I yelled more than I should have. Eventually, I realized that I needed to fix myself before things got more out of control. I went to therapy. I won't try to justify my actions because they were absolutely wrong. I made a lot of bad choices when I could have made better ones. I was not a good person. When I realized that, I was able to understand Guts better in his situation. It doesn't excuse either of us, but it does make it more understandable. Kentaro Miura had an incredible gift of making his characters so real.

    • @kevintanza6968
      @kevintanza6968 Před 6 měsíci +10

      It's very brave of you to admit something like that and is even braver to accept you were responsible for that. Especially since you are a woman (I say this because a lot of people use this moment to say that Miura was being sexist). We all have made huge mistakes in our lives and most of us try to learn from that. I think this moment shows a man who broke and couldn't go on anymore like that because he was hurting probably the person he loves the most. And to be fair, Guts does grow after this and becomes a better man, even if he is still dealing with trauma.

    • @ShepherdsCreek
      @ShepherdsCreek Před 6 měsíci +9

      @kevintanza6968 it's hard to forgive yourself and move forward and become a better person without being accountable for your actions. I'm human. I'm far from perfect. I do try to learn from my past and the mistakes and poor decisions I've made and I agree, Guts did the same. People are complicated and few, if any, real people are 100% good or evil. We all fall somewhere in the middle.

    I agree with everything you said but also I would add sexual frustration of Guts. Sex is Guts one of the biggest trauma. He kind of healed when he and Casca made love but then Griffith made sex into vile thing again.
    This situation that you described was not first time when Guts tried to get close to Casca. After Eclipse when they were in cave Guts wanted to kiss her but she screamed and he just left soon after that. Fact that he didn't push that time but couldn't stop sooner later, really shows how Beast of Darkness influence on him is getting stronger by time goes.
    Guts really in desperate need to feel this bond that they esteblished before and maybe it would be sexists to say, but I think that Guts in his inner toughts have a desire to claim her body back. He wants to be sure that she is HIS and of course he was so sorry of what happened to her, but why we forgetting that his heart might be burning out of jealousy? Minutes before Eclipse started, Casca was saying to him that he can go and she would stay with Griffith. Why we don't consider that Guts is just not sure, is she even his girlfriend or not. Casca and Guts didn't really have time to spend together as couple. It was new relationship and it was destroyed so soon.
    Also I feel Guts kind of feeling emasculated that girl he loves was violated like this in front of him and he couldn't help, so yes, Griffith wanted to Guts feel smaller and low and he succeeded it. That's why it's so easy for Beast of Darnkess to manipulate, twist and change his emotions because he never actually sit down and thought about catastrophe that happend to him. He only accapted anger and not other feeling that he was having.
    Guts could never heal Casca because he is the one who needs healing too. Only after that, maybe they could be together again

      @kevintanza6968 Před 6 měsíci +14

      I think this is also a good take and most people won't address it because is an uncomfortable topic. I never thought of the angle of Guts feeling less of a man after the Eclipse, especially considering what he went through with Donovan as a child. And considering how Casca always looked up to Griffith, it was a double dagger to his death and confidence.
      This obviously doesn't justify his behavior but it does shed some light into it.

    • @mariokujo384
      @mariokujo384 Před 6 měsíci +6

      I think it's moreso that because of his trauma, Guts has a sort of Pavlovian reaction to sex. Doing it with Casca the first time, Guts wakes up the next day and tells her that he wants to do that again "a hundred times, a thousand times". Because of Casca, Guts was able to begin to heal from one of his oldest, deepest wounds. Guts never told the Hawks about his childhood, and Casca still accepting Guts despite him hurting her during his PTSD flashback likely made him feel the happiest he's ever felt in his life. After the Eclipse, he desperately wants to recapture this feeling with Casca, but he can't due to her condition. He realizes this in the cave and breaks down because of it. When he sees Casca again in this scene, she's acting completely different from what he expects from Elaine/Post-Eclipse Casca-killing the bandits and charging at Guts. It gives Guts the desperate hope that Casca's somehow returned, and his brain immediately jumps to when they made love all that time ago.
      Of course, that explanation does not excuse nor absolve him of his actions-what he did at the time was literally the worst thing he could do to her.

    • @ane9911
      @ane9911 Před 6 měsíci +5

      @@mariokujo384 No matter a fact that Guts knows that she didn't wanted it and Griffith forced himself on her, Guts is still just a man. It's surprising that he didn't lost passion for her after this, because that might be one reaction, but Guts develop another type of reaction which is claiming back what he thinks is his. Eventually, both Griffith and Guts consider Casca as somthing belonging to them. Of course I am not saying that Guts is Griffith, he is far better man but he is not a saint. I really hope Griffith will not come to her room in future chapters and will not try to do anything again. Casca really needs time away from both of them to figuring it out who is she and what she really wants.

  • @ZealotPara
    @ZealotPara Před 6 měsíci +14

    Thank you for making this! I think it's really important to break down and address these dark moments not just in fiction but in real life as well.
    Explaining Berserk with the perspective of Jung's research is a match made in heaven for me, since I'm so fascinated with both.
    These last couple years have been a living hell for me, I suddenly came down with an undiagnosed disability and could no longer distract myself with good times, and my shadow came out in full force and I lost a lot that I valued in my life because I lacked the energy to be able to keep them. Losing the ability to work and play, and losing friends by lashing out at them undeservedly because I let the shadow take over and vocalize my intrusive, delusional, jealous, hateful thoughts. I also indulged in drugs for a while, but I didn't get too carried away with them and I stopped when they started making me hallucinate and freak out.
    Thankfully I'm more like Guts than an apostle, and I decided to learn from my mistakes and long story short---I spent a lot of time meditating and trying to find the root of my mental issues by facing myself.
    I didn't know it at first, but I discovered shadow work. Instead of fighting my intrusive thoughts, seeing them as wholely bad and trying to push them away, I found that acknowledging them and trying to patiently understand them goes a long way.
    I learned that it's not about control so much as it's about coming to a mutual understanding with the shadow self. After all, the shadow isn't some entity outside of yourself, it's YOU. It's your eternal partner and cannot be removed. It's more a part of you than any person you love.
    Once I realized that, I came to find that despite his wicked desires, the shadow is my friend and actually wants what's best for me.
    It's hard to put into words, idk if there's any tangible way to describe it because it's not like having an abusive partner, its intention isn't to hurt me, it's more like the shadow only seems to be my enemy when I percieve it as such. It's just part of human nature and can only be made less harmful by trying to understand it. And by doing that, my mindscape has become so much more peaceful and at this point in my life I can truthfully say I love myself.
    It's crazy how negative I used to see the world, how much I used to project and how much I hated myself all because I was ignoring my other half my whole life.
    Sorry about the essay, but waking up and watching this video has put me in THAT mindset 😂
    I am really happy this video is addressing this topic, it's very understated in our world despite how important it is to enriching our lives.
    Despite what's become of the Berserk community, I know the folks who understand media literacy are still out there, The Strugglers. 🧡

    Sudden Berserk content made me scramble to see if a new chapter dropped as I didn't want to be spoiled. But after realizing it was just some fine Ryan introspective analysis of Gatsu, I was subsequently sated by an excellent script. Great choice of Carl Jung quotes as well; the man had such a profoundly deep understanding of the psyche. And I imagine Miura did as well; whether or not he was well read on those subjects while writing Berserk, all of that wisdom was distilled by his pen. And for you to pick up on and share these insights is pretty awesome! Thank you.

    🙄 Can’t believe there are people (soyboy kids) who think guts should be inhumanly good character (like Superman) without any defects, seeing everything through the lenses of pure Dualism (Griffith =100% bad, Guts =100% good) and have a problem with *those* chapters of the story and kept nagging Ryan to speak up about it.. I recommend all those young souls to read/audiolisten the “ *Red Book* ” to fully grasp what both (indirectly) Jung and (directly) Kentarō Miura were trying to convey in Guts story along with his Beast of Darkness (shadow self) .

    • @kevintanza6968

      I personally love both Superman and Guts. Clark is built to be a morally good character and Guts to have shades of gray, even if I think he went on to become a good man. They are both fine but what these idiots online get salty about is that Berserk is very politically incorrect and shows a lot of strong imagery. As if they think Miura is celebrating Guts' behavior in this scene when the story clearly tells you he is fucked in the head.

      @@kevintanza6968 that and Clark is not exactly human, but was raised by tho good ones, and he experienced no trauma at all (at least as a child) unlike guts. damn, imagine A kryptonion in Berserk universe, a little Clark raised by someone Like Gambino with all the same experiences as guts have. Would be just a bloodbath for both (mostly bad) humans and apostles alike.. And as for those idiots online i rather not ponder in what direction their moral compass is pointing at.. Miura was a teen basically when he imagined Guts, he was bound to be edgy af..story is so old now, it’s like having mental breakdown over too many white characters in LotR which is almost century old, even tho there is a lot of diversity in Berserk, … you have, Midland white folk,some midland asian folk, kushans….. and a sh*t ton of various magical creatures lol , very politically correct imo. As for sexism.. well Casca (in her sane form) is the most independent strong woman you can get..

    What people need to understand about Guts is that the Ecplise changed Guts just as fundamentally as it changed Griffith and Casca but Guts actually changed the MOST out of the 3 of them it is just the most subtle,
    Casca during the golden age arc constantly belittles and calls Guts “a Mad Dog” and it’s blatantly obvious that she is wrong and he does prove them all wrong however After the eclipse Guts does effectively become the very thing Casca said he was, he becomes a half mad Rapid dog that is literally foaming at the mouth with anger and bloodlust, and while Casca has had her trauma treated and somewhat dealt with and she’s been coddled by literally everyone literally NO ONE outside of Sherike has seen that guts is actually more damaged than Casca was in everyway, and his trauma has literally never been dealt with to this day Guts ever since the Ecplise has been a ticking time bomb and that bomb has never been closer to going off.
    Guts has NEVER been a good person or an Evil Person but the Ecplise absolutely did push Guts more towards the side of Evil and truth be told it’s never gone away it’s just Been Guts shoving his darker aspects (the beast of darkness) aside for Casca sake,
    Guts is one of the few characters that utterly destroys Dents quote of the hero living long into become the Villian because he’s the complete antithesis to that very concept he was never a hero or a Villian to begin with, Guts has done Horrible things even before the Ecplise like Killing a child (accident aside he still undertook the Assasination mission and was willing to at least go down that path)

    • @allahalkareem8055
      @allahalkareem8055 Před 6 měsíci +4

      I agree that Guts was never a hero based on his morals or motives (I'd say most heroes want to be heroes) but you could argue that regardless of that, if you evaluate objectively, he has done some quite heroic stuff, like fend off a pack of wolves as a child, and whatnot.
      Then you might day 'but a hero is a defender of others' to which I would say that sometimes it is also heroic to defend yourself for your own sake, to stay alive. To fight because you don't know anything else.
      Despite all I have said I can't call guts a hero due to the horrible things he did. And I can't call him villain as well due to his motive to kill all apostles. I don't know what to call him. The key message of the story, however, in my opinion, is "don't give in to your darkness", whatever that might be for you.
      Man Berserk is the best work of fiction ever made.

  • @DonutGuard
    @DonutGuard Před 6 měsíci +1

    It's scenes like this that make you think about other parts of the story. When faced with the main character's lowest point, one can't help but compare as you said.
    For some it makes them go from, "Griffith bad." to "Griffith bad?"
    For me I thought about Gambino. We never got to see what turned him into the sadistic abusive asshole that he eventually became. We never got to see if there was ever a point in his life where he was different. We're given hints of these things through some excellent story telling, but we'll never know anything about him before Guts was born.
    One thing I've noticed though, is that nearly every character in the series is a shadow or reflection of Guts in some way. Zodd, Skull Knight, Wyald... all what could have been if Guts went off in one direction or another.
    Gambino I think is what Guts might have become had he never met the Band of the Hawk. A lonely, isolated, angry man who was surrounded by people he could only pretend to be close to, but never show weakness or vulnerability around. It's likely that Gambino struggled with his father as well, and was merely continuing a cycle of abuse rather than being able to end it. I'm not saying we should feel sorry for him, and I'm not trying to excuse his behavior, but it's amazing that even with as little as we got to really know him, that Miura's focus on character development allows us to infer that Gambino wasn't a simple two dimensional character.

From when he was vulnerable as a kid to Donovan, to killing his father figure Gambino, then seeing the love of his life violated infront of him. It would be a guess that this BEAST OF DARKNESS is the sick-wolf twisted fantasy that formed after he saw Griffith’s betrayal to not only him but his friends. It’s quite tragic.

    he sadly became that which he swore to destroy, and maybe it helped him more fully understand his own limits in order to continue seeking to overcome and destroy it. the point about him choosing to accept help from companions is one of the greatest outcomes from this. maybe this was what was needed for him to start overcoming his stubborn side. his choice to continue trying was pivotal, like you said.

    As stupi and cheesie as it may sounds or read thats my number one reason for liking berserk so much, everysingle time guts make a mistake or do something wrong out of pure anger it feel so relatable, as a person who struggles with anger managment issues i find incredible relatable to the point of tears of seeing what could happend if you let those stupid dark thoughts slip, this is a fucking master piece.

    I guess one thing I learned from Berserk is that every day it's quite difficult to maintain dignity and "good" humanity by not lowering your guard against anything, especially oneself.

    I don't get why people have a problem misunderstanding this scene. It's one of those rare moments where everything is directly shown and explained. It's not subtle at all!
    Maybe it's more an emotional thing where you are so shocked your mind refuses to comprehend it (I still have problem understanding the Eclipse and Griffith's decision). I personally wasn't, though the consequence of Casca hating Guts makes me a bit sad. I like this scene, because it has major consequences that are shown and easier to understand than, for example, Donovan or Adonis moments. I would personally like those moments of Guts's life to be explored more (tho the first one was explored in the chapter where Casca and Guts "bond"), but most likely they won't and it's sad😢

    “ I have known many gods. He who denies them is as blind as he who trusts them too deeply. I seek not beyond death. It may be the blackness averred by the Nemedian skeptics, or Crom’s realm of ice and cloud, or the snowy plains and vaulted hall of the Norheimer’s Valhalla.
    I know not, nor do I care. Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.” -Conan the Barbarian

    I don’t think there’s a point where Guts argues back at the Beast of Darkness.
    He just lets it say whatever.
    On a side note, I’ve been thinking for a while that the Beast is a split personality, you think there’s any merit to that?

    I wouldn't say what Guts did was truly evil. Terrible, misguided, and undoubtedly wrong sure, but as we see with Griffith and the Apostles, true evil is to willfully do something like this without much provocation and treat it like nothing afterward. The fact he immediately snaps out of it once he realizes what he's doing and vows to never let anything like that happen again is what makes him a decent man deep down, and the best written character in all of manga.

    I don't agree with the Griffith did nothing wrong videos but I kinda wonder if Guts and his Beast of Darkness
    is a similar situation to Griffith and Femto. They both have a dark side that isn't entirely controllable.
    I know a lot of people say Griffith was crying because of the emotions of Moonlight Boy and that may very well be true.
    But I kinda wonder if it may also actually be Griffith himself crying because crazy as this may sound
    I think it could be possible that on a subconscious level that Griffith actually regrets what he's done.
    I dunno just a thought. What do you think?

      Guts is flawed and his flaws in this case are proportionate to the trauma that he's been through. It makes his actions understandable, though not excusable. Frankly, it's surprising that something like this didn't happen sooner.

    HITTING THE SACK 1/2
    I'm sorry budy, as I already told you I have no more empowering ammo for you no more. I don't know what else can I say to you. Like Chicht I have run out of leaves. From now on you are on your own. What ? What are you doing here Schnozy ? What say you? Oh nothing here it is, Ryan hitting the sack again. Hey, what's up with you ? You have started glowing a bit all of a sudden. It's for something I said ? (Schnoz nods solemny). What ? but if I only have said that Ryan is hitting the sack. What ?! more glowing ? (Schnoz nods solemny again). Ok, what the hell, let's do it, let's do it !! Ryan is hitting the sack, Ryan is hitting the sack, Ryan is ......AAAARRGHHGH !!! the blinding light !!! it's too much for me to bear !!! FAAAOHHUMMM !!! What the @@@ is this !? YOU !? HIM ?! So Ryan was right !? All the big rock stars in history were actually you in disguise !? (Schnoz nods solemny again). What the ?! Me a wearing a school uniform with short pants ? And what ? That I have to play the guitar ? I don't have any and even if I got I don't know @@@ about playing one !? That I only have to use my Imagination you say ? Oh @@@ it why not. I'm so glad that you be........... BACK IN BLACK !!!! while Ryan is hitting the sack on a HIGHWAY TO HELL. (AC/DC - Back In Black; AC/DC - Highway to Hell Official Videos). Dude, next time leave that Carl D-ung or whatever and just resort to some wierdo's scotish-australian good hard rock band. What could go wrong after merging some scotish guys who feel manly as @@@ while wearing a skirt without underwerar while blowing bagpipes with some australian platypuses and natives who think the Universe sprouted from a dream? Very easy. ALL. Yeeeeeehaaaaa !!
    Don't let darkness feed on you and be you the one feeding from it. Just chanel those dark emotions into something productive like AC/DC and so many others did, do and will do. Like you yourself have done without harming no one since you started this chanel, like you yourself have done with this video about the lowest hitting the sack moment of Guts or with the super long retrospective about Chucky getting lots of likes and visualizations in the process. To feed even more this dark side of yours which it seeems to be your wicked (sadly it makes you suffer) engine remember the survival instinct which empowered our european ancestors to fight against winter leading us to world dominance later on, remember Caprio's Revenant, remember how Griffith used it to make his soldiers fight twice as harder putting them between the enemy and that river to make it impossible for them to escape, take a look to a videogame called Dead Space (whoa I saw once an interview with its creator and how his obsession about dying in thousand of horrible ways feed his imagination to produce the various ways the monsters could kill the character the player impersonated and it was deep @@@ I tell you) or to another one called I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream and the novel which inspired it. I hope you've been..........THUNDERSTRUCK !!! (AC/DC - Thunderstruck Official Video) and if not check this ones I wrote to some of my trapped souls:
    Where I live it doesn't rain anymore (even the government has anounced water restritctions and increased taxes to anyone using too much water) but when I have posted some uuh, peculiar comments indeed it has rained....Of course surely it's a mere coincidence but if not, please I don't know what you all did back then when I posted those comments but do it again. Here we need water asap. If really there is such a connection something tells me that what you all did to make it rain here where I live was, ironically, nothing. I think so bc back in 2020 when the whole world stopped bc of the pandemic it began to rain a lot. So, if you all can afford it, please stop traveling or using machines/energy for a few days (or once a couple of weeks or so) and see what happens (if as expected, nothing happens, no harm done anyways). Oh and once again speaking of imagination have you checked the movies Poor Things, Priscilla (remember my comment here about the king?), Imaginary and The Beast ? Funny them all too don't you think ? I, I, I can't believe it, it is, it is @@@ raining in here !? During three days !? (just a couple days after my last comment and the weather men already were predicting some rains but they fail so often that I didn't give importance. until I don't percieve things with my own senses I don't give a @@@ about any @@@). Ok just a few drops but still.....So you know, just to make yourself an idea about the scarcity of rainings in here, during the entire March 2023 it rained literally zero @@@ days. I'm so glad that I have decided to be BACK IN BLACK. I'm so happy right now that I would not care a single @@@ to drive even on a HIGHWAY TO HELL itself. I knew it, climate change is real (eat lead cons. metaphorically of course. their Texas dancing ladies still can be spared though. to eat uh, something that is not lead. provided they want of course. libs like me are real gentlemen after all. more or less...).
    Yes, we cooperating all together can change the climate to anihilate us ourselves BUT we also have God-eating-chips-at-home like powers and just control the weather at will for our benefit whenever we see fit. Just like when I watched your performance and discovered that "all what you have built here is nothing but a fleeting dream, a dream from which your precious Conclave shall awaken, only to find themselves drowned in a greater nightmare" sorry Starcraft obs. again: I have been........ THUNDERSTRUCK !!! Thanks a lot to everyone. Once again, if you all can afford it a bit more and just keep doing nothing (not traveling much, not consuming so much energy, reflecting about crazy @@@ after reading wierdo CZcams comments, etc.) like you did in 2020 during that cursed pandemic and allow some more rain drops to fall into my homeland I would be so grateful to all of you, please, pretty, pretty pleeeeease. Some times I'm such a sweet little thing I can't help it. Some others I just mess up. A ton. Sorry. Oh and yesterday in a lame public tv chanel I saw for the first time in my life Superman 3 (1983). Well, ok, only a few scenes (bad movie as @@@). In it a drunken dork was able to, among other things like controlling the traffic lights, manipulate the weather with a computer. Funny don't you think ?
    Yes, of course there's lots of things that we can't percieve just like in the past thousands died out of infections while we didn't know nothing about germs. For example: Radiation (it can either kill you or supply with energy an entire city though I don't like it bc the toxic waste it produces it's very dangerous and lives for hundreds of years) infra-red rays (they are used it our remot controls making our lifes easier) elctromagnetic fields (they can either empower or collapse all of our technological gadgets) Bacteria (some of them defend us and some others can even kill us) and countless others that, as you say, we still can't explain not even with science. Thanks to Science nowadays we can percieve some of them and therefore we can use them for our benefit if we are wise and good or for our loss we are evil or ignorant. But some is not all. So yes, I repeat, you are right, there is a lot of stuff out there that we still don't know and maybe we shall never know but if we end up discovering them I can assure you none of them will be supernatural or magical. They will be as all those things I mentioned before and all of them will be discovered by Science and Scientists. Not by performing rituals and such. If you still want to practice some rituals to make yourself connect more with the earth or with yourself or with others or with the Universe that's another thing and I don't think it be so bad but don't expect to summon a spirit of somekind from the netherworld please. Oh, and by the way magic exists. The sorcerers, are once again, are Scientists. And their impossible to understand for us humble folk obscure Grimoires full of strange complicated symbols and formulas are the books full of complicated equations which allow them to effectively resurrect the dead (disfibrillators) summon fireballs (bombs) or lightings (electricity) if they want. So, if some day someone is effectively able to summon a demon it will be a genetic engineer who will mix the dna of a human with the one of a bat and a goat.
