“Until we recognize our commonality, we create more woe for ourselves and others… we trigger their shame and further isolation.”
    - Daniel Maté
No statement, no words can speak to the immense suffering, devastation and horrendous humanitarian crisis intensifying in the Middle East. The current tragedy awakens existential fear, acute grief and deep despair. It also creates a rift among friends and families. Many are in a state of deep shock and in need of support, and the obstacles to communicating with loved ones only intensify the anguish.
In this Q&A session, Dr. Gabor Maté and his son Daniel discuss ways to listen and communicate across different perspectives and narratives.
Dr. Maté is a Holocaust survivor and an expert on trauma, addiction, and the connections between stress and illness. Daniel is an award-winning theatre songwriter and self-described ‘mental chiropractor’. Father and son have co-authored "The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture".
They draw on their personal experiences and professional perspectives to help us foster a compassionate dialogue, even when grappling with divisive narratives, intergenerational trauma and incapacity to face hard facts.
When in the grip of trauma, it becomes extremely challenging to make space for a different perspective, or take in facts that don’t fit our narrative of choice. The sheer emotional pain can narrow our vision and harden our position. As Dr. Maté’s work reveals, beneath rigid beliefs and attitudes often lie unhealed wounds in need of care, not condemnation.
We explored how trauma brings about a false quest for security. When survival feels under threat, we instinctively adopt an “us versus them” bunker mentality, clinging to the familiar while walling off anything that feels foreign. This primal urge for safety and control ends up fostering the very insecurity it is trying to fight. Only by questioning these “normal” reactions can space emerge for a broader understanding.
Gabor Maté, M.D. is a specialist on trauma, addiction, stress and childhood development. After 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience, Dr. Maté worked for over a decade in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness. For his groundbreaking medical work and writing he has been awarded the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian distinction, and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver.
Gabor is also the creator of a psychotherapeutic approach, Compassionate Inquiry, now studied by thousands of therapists, physicians, counselors, and others in over 80 countries.
Daniel Maté is a composer, lyricist, and playwright for musical theatre based in BC and New York. He has been active since 2007, when he graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with an M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing. He also holds a B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from McGill.
Daniel received the prestigious Edward Kleban Prize for Most Promising Lyricist in American Musical Theatre, a Jonathan Larson Foundation Grant, and the ASCAP Foundation’s Cole Porter Award for Excellence in Music and Lyrics (for his song cycle The Longing and the Short of It.) He has presented his work at the historic Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and New York’s Lincoln Center, and was an invited participant in the inaugural Johnny Mercer Writers Colony.
Science and Nonduality (SAND) contemplates and reveres the beauty, complexity, pain, and great mystery that weave the infinite cycles of existence. We explore beyond ultimate truths, binary thinking, and individual awakening while acknowledging humanity as a mere part of the intricate web of life.

@Well, and then she was muted. I wonder, if the moderators muted her. I was here a view days ago, there were comments begging them to go back to her, as she seemed very touched and sad. The moderators also pointed out that several people during the lifestream asked them to put an end on the conversation. But I dont find these comments anymore, so I guess they have been deleted. I just find that all very strange..... I still believe that the channel owners want to do some good with this, but for me this seems to be a distorted way - although I feel their intention is good. (I would not say the same for Gabor Mates intentions, he rather seem to be obsessed with himself and he knows everything.....Apart from knowing everything about trauma...he knows whats going on in Israel, whats going on in Gaza, even whats going in Germany....Amazing, isnt it? Or maybe rather a overestimation ob himself? ) So maybe better find a trustworthy organisation that works in Gaza and donate money to help the desperate people there?

@@annahacker5863 Only genocide defenders think it's cold hearted to correct a privileged oppressor. You wouldn't call it cold hearted if someone said the exact same thing to a German woman participating in the crimes of her country in 1938 but then we know that brown and black lives never matter to many as much as European ones. Even their victimhood is elevated to a higher plane than that of non Europeans.

@@annahacker5863 Where did you find this behaviour from him? Anyone who has extensive knowledge on more than two subjects is a 'know it all'? He lived in Palestine for many years. He's seen the suffering of Palestinians in the West Bank fot quite a while. He's seen what Israelis do to them. And unlike you with your dedicated sophistry of 'both sides', he has the humanity to not support oppressors out of tribal affiliation. The fact that you smear such a man because he shares the lopsided reality of this issue where there's a clear oppressor and victim shows your own moral bankruptcy. You'd love him if shed tears for the population that's occupying a defenceless people instead of propagating for its victims.
When it comes to us brown people, European colonialism and oppression suddenly becomes 'nuanced' and 'too complicated' with two equally legitimate sides but when it comes to Europeans, the idea of invasions and military occupations is extremely easy to decipher and condemn like we saw for in the case of Ukraine.

The japanese culture knows something that is called MA, and that is a moment of silence after having listened to someone before answering, a moment to become aware of the impact of the words received and their resonance in one self.
This conversation is an example of it. The best contact between the speakers I could observe then were moments of MA, and a rupture of contact took place when there was no listening any more.

What a beautiful open-hearted vulnerable dialogue. Having participated in quite a few public “talk to your cousin” moments in anti-racism work in the Deep South of Amerikkka, I know how much courage and equilibrium it takes to have such hard conversations. I love that Daniel and Gabor are doing this work together. I also know what that feels like, to put your authentic self on the front lines beside your child in public. We are all having so many global teachable moments. The Palestinian people have been teaching us all for a hundred years now what persistent resilient insistence on liberation and sovereignty looks like. And our Jewish diaspora grappling with these gut-wrenching conversations has much to teach us all about finding our way through the noise to discern what is real, what is right and dig deep to broaden our compassion. Conversations like these give me hope that we might yet have time to crack open enough for the light to get in. #FreePalestine

Hamas has been firing rockets into peaceful Israeli territories for years. They have been trying to commit genocide against Jews for years. What don’t you understand??????? Gaza hasn’t been occupied by Israel since 2005 when the Jews there were expelled by ISRAEL so the Palestinians could have their own territory and the Palestinians voted in Hamas and turned Gaza into a land of terror tunnels and weaponry against Israel. Why don’t you present this evidence?????? You’re damaged from childhood trauma and need a good therapist.

I wish that most of those who presented themselves to the panel would have taken Daniel´s advice to take a little self-examination. The narrow lenses in a discussion about other people´s sufferings were disheartening. It was nearly 100% what about me.
In all of his discussions about this subject, Gabor has been steady and clear in his narrative: He cares about the Palestinians due to his honest, rigorous, unrelenting self-reflecting search for truth. This truth expands way beyond this particular time and place and has been pushed to a much larger picture. This truth comes with healing, release from the grip of fear, clarity of sight beyond one´s own self and leads to true compassion.

And the honesty from both of them about the hardness of heart that has developed in them over this time - I soo relate to that. Just after you were born, no matter how bad the circumstances, a person, or people, gave you some measure of loving kindness, some amount of compassion. If not, you would not be alive now. That was your introduction to life, the implicit knowledge that loving kindness and compassionate understanding are indispensable for human life to exist.
The foundation of human life, therefore, is loving kindness and compassionate understanding.
As we age we are taught otherwise by damaged people. 💔
Their misdirection is rarely intentional. They are simply sick due to their own early learning experiences/trauma.
Once this is understood, we can seek help to dismantle the wrong thinking that we were taught and insert, through daily practice, right thinking, and thereby right actions.
The teacher that I have learned from is Thich Nhat Hahn, and the practitioners that learned from him before me.

Out of the 1148 total names on haaret dataset, 473 military and 675 were civilians.
Ratio of civilians to military personnel killed on the 7th was 1 . 4 : 1 - lower than any of the iTf "mowing" operations, which has a ratio of 7 : 1

From the 161,233 accumulated civilian casualties over only 14 years of "mowing" operations.
A 162 :1 ratio means that for every 162 civillians, 1 military personnel is a casualty. The 7th had a ratio of 1.4:1, more than a hundred times lower.
The 473 are - 55 soldiers, 13 privates, 59 corporals, 200 sergeants (45 of whom were sergeant majors), 48 commanders, 32 lieutenants, 5 lieutenant colonels, 6 colonels, 37 officers, 10 inspectors, 6 intendents, and 2 Lance Corp. Although I disagreed completely with Rifkas understanding of things, i was really moved by her. She appeared so authentic and bewildered by the focus on Palestine. I appreciated the Mates trying to help her know the context, and to admit their hardening against israeli suffering. This was both normalising for me, but also shook me to recognise how I too have done this and how unhelpful this is. In his video with Angela Davis, they recognised the experience of pain for those that were involved in the siege on 7th October and have lost people or are missing people is valid, and unbearable pain. I think this would have been worth sharing with Rifka before 'explaining'. But we are all human and get so activated by this horrific situation. I am going to try to hold onto the fear, hurt and anger that those i dont agree with are feeling to try to maintain the possibility of expansion for myself and the other

Dr. and Daniel Mate’ my knowledge of the middle east is infantile in comparison to your collective wisdom. I don’t say that in as much in reverence to the two of you as it is an appreciation for the heartfelt efforts I see the Mate’s making for people to have a transformative experience and a deeper understanding. The conversations you are having are critical for humanity. It is my hope that peace comes to the souls of the Israeli people and that they can heal from the fear and dread they feel. The Israeli government is ultimately responsible for this ongoing tragic assault on the Palestinian people. It’s time for them to grasp the truth about the genocide their government is carrying out. Until then, we will continue to witness the moral and spiritual self destruction of the Israeli people. I wonder if what we see time and again IS the true nature of the human condition, and that is to self-destruct.

Thanks for your examination of this very difficult topic. As an Australian spending time in Germany during this difficult time the book “The History of Love and Hate in 21 Statues” comes to mind. Symbols are powerful representations within the human psyche which often defy rationality in their ability to impassion and mobilise. Mixed with Black and White thinking and the categorisation of people as “Other” - well there can be serious consequences. I have had interesting conversations with German enculturated people before and then after the current Israel Palestine war began regarding Germany’s stance on its past and the Governmental stance on Israel. I think the underlying problem with Germany’s approach is the Black and White nature of the culture. Perhaps I’m wrong. But it stood out to me. “Because of what we did to the Jews we need to be 100% behind whatever it is that the Jewish government is doing BECAUSE WE NEVER WANT “IT” TO HAPPEN AGAIN!” And as a result of this Germany has been instrumental in it HAPPENING AGAIN. Only this time it is the Palestinians being subjected to Genocide by the state of Israel. Such an irony. But people in the German Government are blind to it. Because Black and White thinking is a type of mind blindness. A lack of “Mindsight”. Because your consciousness is turned fully one way- what you see to be the “Right” way - you cannot see the trail of destruction you leave behind you.

a lot of times when people talk about jews, they really mean zionists because Israeli jews have identified themselves with zionist (unfortunately) so people use these 2 words interchangeably.
As for advika or whoever her name was (the lady from Jerusalem), she thinks she carried the trauma of her dad (she was not actually traumatized herself), what kind of trauma does she think the Palestinians feel that are directly traumatized daily AND they inherit the trauma from their parents and grand parents (so it is multiple layers of trauma)?

There are a few questions that I have.
    1. The idea of supremacy. That The Jewish people are the chosen people (tribe) of The Creator. I find it incredible that The Creator would select one ; people, tribe, nation, ethnicity, race or religion, above every other ; people, tribe, nation, ethnicity, race or religion. That God Allah, Yaweh, (The Creator) would show favour and privilege to one group over every other group.
    2. Is there an indoctrination or form of brainwashing implemented on the collective conscience of Jewish peoples mind ? There seems to be a deep rooted fear or hatred for people who do not subscribe to the zionist ideology.
    3. With recent events in Israel/Palestine and the atrocities inflicted do you think that this will be the demise of the State of Israel?
    4. The Jewish people whom have been persecuted throughout history and have suffered greatly especially during World War 2, could then inflict such horror and inhumanity upon the Palestinian people. Having suffered and felt so much pain to then inflict a similar pain and suffering upon another group.
Thanks in advance for your responce to these questions. 💛💜💛

Im hear because this stands as an example of whats happening in America as refusal to assimilate creates the very same dynamics within all nations ,people, places and things.
Some of us witnessed the time before penal systems and proper government in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon etc. As a kid beruit was an unbelievably different place, the place to be which is lite years away from that now.
It sucks but it highlights how even in the western global socialism at the expense of national hegemony cant have complete opposite ways of life devolping so separate to the point one becomes unrecognizable to the other.
Giving Hamas all the rope for this long is the only true wrong we as the rest of the world carry guilt on .
We knew it was coming but you wouldn't expect Palestinians launch those attacks on this administration and not the older passive left wing socialist administration.
All western nations in Europe, UK & America under 1900s structuralism has unfortunately all had complete refusal to assimilate within at the expense of underming it's own way of life and being ..

I honestly don’t think she will even try to understand the plight of the beautiful Palestinian people and the horrors they have suffered. She seems to believe she has more rights than the indigenous people, when clearly she’s a Zionist European or Russian. Her hate and false equivalency of Hamas and Palestinians being one and the same was unfair! The holocaust is a pocket excuse they use to hush everyone and as a pass/excuse.

I think it's really important that there's some compassion and space for expression though - if you've spent most of your time enmeshed in a particular culture and suddenly you're being asked to shed all the ideas that culture has conditioned you with, and which are important for your own identity, it's going to be a deeply shocking and destabilising experience. And I say that with having no experience whatsoever of my parents generation experiencing something as traumatic as the holocaust, or fearing that there are people in the world who want to exterminate me and my people. I imagine it's not too dissimilar a situation to the struggle most of us have coming to terms with how the cultures we've evolved are devastating the planet - if we truly let that truth permeate us, it means opening ourselves to letting go of a huge amount of things that we've been conditioned to feel entitled to. I wanted to hear more from her in response to what the Matés were saying, and have it unpacked a bit more.

@@scienceandnonduality So what exactly do you mean when you refer to antizionism? I looked it up in Wikipedia, here comes the definition:
" Although anti-Zionism is a heterogeneous phenomenon, all its proponents agree that the creation of the modern State of Israel, and the movement to create a sovereign Jewish state in the region of Palestine-a region partly coinciding with the biblical Land of Israel-was flawed or unjust in some way.[7]"
So what are the conclusions of Anti Zionism? Shall the modern state of Israel no longer exist? Shall all Jews in Israel people go back to.... I don't know?
Is that what you want? That is madness.
I understand that one can criticize certain aspects, like the settlement movement of right winged israelis in the west bank, the the governement of Netanjahu. (and in fact many Israelis critizise these things as well). And certainly all that bombing and killing of so many civilians in the gaza strip.
But that criticism doesnt mean to question the right of existence of the state of Israel, nor does it justify the horrible astrocities of the hamas terror organisation.
