  • You can roll backwards (also called riding fakie) on ANY bike, it doesn't take a special wheel to get the job done. In this video, we explain the process that makes it happen, and how you can do it on ANY bike. After explaining what is happening, we break down the technique and show you all the steps to practicing it on your own.
    The important thing about rolling backwards is that it applies to other skills on your mountain bike. For instance, trackstands are made possible by a quick rollback motion, which comes from the technique we discuss in this video.
    Here's my Trackstand Tutorial video that I referenced in the video: • An Unexpected Way To L...

    I just started practicing this last week …talk about feeling like a brand new rider again. Very humbling. Thanks for the excellent vid as always, Aaron.

      Thanks! Stoked to hear that you've started the journey - this one takes some time to get rolling, but you'll have this under control in no time. Have fun!

      It does that when a bloke starts out. Watching a friend after I rolled up to him on a fixie, said it had reverse, backed away and took off... He just had to try it out. Wanna talk about shaky rider just out of training wheels?!?! Was hysterical. Fakies take getting used to since they are an unfamiliar feeling in the beginning.

    This is brilliant and so fun. Been practicing rolling backwards and it's so hard, but when i can manage to keep my balance for a few pedals backward it feels like a huge accomplishment. I can almost feel the half cap coming along already. So great and thanks for another lesson!

      That's awesome!! This is such a fun one to practice - half cab will come along before you know it!

    Fakie takes years of practice, its not an easy trick, took me years!
    Great indepth tutorial as usual gold standard 👍👍

      For some, it comes naturally, others, not so much. Try manuals... that will be the most irritating trick to learn of all time. Again, for some, it comes naturally however, for most, it is the most challenging bike move of all time.

    Wow, do I suck at going backwards. I can track stand for days. I can ride slow speed tech, and I can even do a decent stoppie, but trying to go backwards made me feel like I have never ridden a bike. If you are as bad as this as I am, it helps to use a curb stop to create backwards momentum

      @SuperRiderTV  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Practice makes progress! Once you get this moving, it gets much easier - I’m sure you’ll unlock it in no time.

    For learning I find that setting my bodyweight way back behind the rear axle helps a lot. Also, kinda weaving back and forth with the front wheel seems easier than trying to go dead straight. Idk if these are bad habits.

    • @SuperRiderTV
      @SuperRiderTV  Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah!! Same. That front wheel element takes the longest to sort out - I still feel like my front wheel has a mind of its own.

    • @dansacco1964
      @dansacco1964 Před 2 měsíci

      Oscillating slightly feels like full time active control vs balancing straight. Positive input is easier than waiting to react. I guess track standing is the same way. Way harder without the wheel turned. For fakie practice I also like to ride uphill to a curb and push off hard when the front wheel hits.

    I have a fixed gear bike in the collection now. Direct drive. Kind of a cheat code that one. 😜👍 I still prefer trying it on the other bikes though. 😎

    Ali C said this is *just* a trials reset, not really a fakie. So I guess a fakie is when you ride off backwards for miles, disappearing into the setting sun 🤣

    Could it be advantageous to first try rolling back with no chain?

      Possibly? Although not necessary. Could be fun, though!

      I took off my chain and gave it a try. Do not recommend! When slow or stopped I need that front pedal pressure to keep balance and when the pedal dropped instantly down I almost cracked my head. Rolling downhill is fine, but stopping while balanced is an issue. Didn’t help with fakie rollback practice either.

    I’ve been trying to learn this on my e-bike. Do you think it is hard on the motor? I saw a video recently that claimed you shouldn’t roll your e-bike backwards.

    • @SuperRiderTV
      @SuperRiderTV  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I haven't heard of this before, I can't imagine backpedaling on the bike would damage an e-bike motor though?

  • @DavidParathyras

    What about SRAM's T-type transmission which makes the gears clutching when back-pedaling?

    • @SuperRiderTV
      @SuperRiderTV  Před 2 měsíci

      Sorry, I've never ridden T-Type transmission, but I would be shocked if it completely prevented you from pedaling backwards?

    • @DavidParathyras
      @DavidParathyras Před 2 měsíci

      Yes the chain jumps to the smallest cog and back to where it was before 😢. I searched it because I thought it was faulty and turned out to be normal. People propose to just not back pedal......
