if you listen to the first part of Harishankar sir's thani, you'll find that he actually plays the korvai Mali sir was trying earlier on and he finishes it spot on the beat (harder especially since its not taken from samam to samam). That is the hallmark of a true genius!!! And of course his famous korvai which he plays in the 2nd phase. He can play that 1 million times and I'll still be impressed at how he can play it with that much clarity!!! People like Harishankar sir are born, not made.

A terrific tani avartanam. Harishankar at his best. Thanks for posting!

A terrific thani indeed. One of the Mannargudi Easwaran's best. Harishankar can pretty much repeat on the fly what mridhangist plays, irrespective of who he is.

It doesn't take a genius to see that Harishankar Sir the genius received the loudest applause! Do we miss you or what, sir? :(

Mahalingam had been a master of performing complex calculations in swaras. The young mirudangam player (he became another mastro in later years) seemed failing to understand the patern and things do not match well. Thats why TRM appeard to be upset. When he as upset means, that was end of the concert, whether it was at the beginning or end. He would stop playing and just walk away.

I was there for the concert in 1984. It was the last public function both for him and J.Krishnamurthy which also I attended.

@lsjtifo Rephrasing you, Greed, false values which may be socially 'useful' mediocrity, ... are certainly not qualifications that will ever make an artist a genius in his lifetime. A genius does not make an effort to become one, again well said. Given these facts, probability of a genius coming in our midst is very slim. Misuse of electronic media also tends to help even the 'cogniscenti to recognise immediately the wheat from the chaff, let alone the most extraordinary ones, the geniuses.

CORRECTION - Misuse of electronic media also tends to HAMPER even the cogniscenti, etc. etc.

@lsjtifo I am afraid most people among listeners and musicians believe that a mere high proficiency in the art (which can be achieved with dedication and disciplined hardwork) will usher genius in the person. How untrue a belief !
