One of my school teachers was a serial Sahara overlander, he crossed that desert at least 20 times. He had tried everything: motorcycles, Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Land Cruisers, Mercedes G, Santana, Unimog, Original Kübelwagen. His preference: a bog standard 2CV.

The unique suspension system of the 2CV makes it almost impossible to roll over, gives it great ground clearance, balances the car when taking big obstacles, and last but not least (specially in the desert!): it's engine is air-cooled! One of the greatest examples in automotive history of intelligent engineering!
@@Qwerty8 Exactly! What it does not have, can also not be damaged! No electronics nor complex technic, so maintenance and repairs can be done all by yourself, also very important if your 2CV stops in the middle of nowhere...!
In some spots, where they had trouble, they could've turned around and BACKED up the hill! In a FWD car, steep hills UNLOAD the drive wheels. By backing up the hill, it distributes the weight of the car OVER the driven tires, essentially "bearing down" onto the tires and providing more traction. Also the people in the car "help" with their weight, too, over the slippery slope. I have a steep drive, and I have done this lots of times when going up it in snow. The car would sometimes slip on the snow, but by turning around and backing up, I could get out.
Unfortunately the 2CV gearbox is known to be killed by backing up highspeed or with much force. Dunno if there has been a solution found to this issue since back in the days.
Thers a few other tires he could have used that i guess would have suit better, like the vredestein snow tires of the ones with tractor grip, dont know name of those but can be bought where i live. But the biggest problem is ofcourse thers 4 people in the car. But thats some really great driving! So silly looking at the other big jeeps driving like they where afraid od mud, where the 2cv go straight in the shit with no worry what so ever.
youbidoubidou it has 35hp at most. having better tires and less people is not going to change a lot it's performances, a citroen GS or a bmw engine swap would. (and better tires would kill the clutch)
hbourj - I had one that I drove in Germany, then Czechoslovakia, Austria & Italy & it did climb hills. I really miss that car it was so much fun to drive.
