  • The next-gen Chevrolet Bolt, which GM announced in July 2023, is likely to be one of America’s most affordable EVs. Featuring a new design and Ultium and Ultifi technologies, it’ll offer young customers a more stylish and high-tech urban commuter.
With an upgraded platform and a battery back containing lower-cost cells, the new electric crossover could be more efficient and thus deliver an improved range. Watch the video to learn more about the next-gen Chevy Bolt.

    My expectations are:
1). Base price about $5K less than base Equinox EV, so just below $30K.
2). Different sized LFP batteries will be offered. Base version will come with a 200 mile battery. Larger 250 and 300 mile batteries will be offered in higher level models or as options.
3). DC fast charging will be faster, but slower than the competition. Speed will vary according to battery size. Smallest will support 90 KW, larger batteries will support charging up to 150 KW.
4). Dealer installed battery modules will be available at a reasonable price. It will be possible to mix and match different battery chemistries.
5). A major change will be optional AWD using the Ultium 90 HP AWD Assist induction motor (less drag than PM motor). The current 200 HP FWD motor will be dropped in favor of an Ultium motor with similar power output. Motor changes will require suspension changes including to independent suspension on the rear.
6). The Ultium energy recovery system will be standard in all versions. This system is based around a heat pump for better winter efficiency.
7). The infotainment system will be upgraded to use the newer displays and software used in other GM EV.
8). Major change to software to align with Ultium requirements including Over-the-Air updates. 2:35

Exhaustive list! Thank you Larry. We also think that a lower capacity battery option would help GM achieve an attractive entry-level price, but most customers are going to be looking at the higher configurations for its features and the safety net of the added range.

Hello! Yes, as mentioned in the captions and the description, those are renders which combine the styling of the Equinox EV with the shape of the Bolt EUV. We'll be sure to make a new set of renders and video once we see the first test prototypes on the road!

I would replace the standard side rear-view mirrors with outside cameras and side screens on the dash, Honda E style. Would be great in terms of convenience and aerodynamics.
Also, I heard that the early 2017 Bolts had an option to watch movies on the center screen. It would be nice to have it back. For example, to kill the time while charging.
I believe the new Bolt could use more acceleration at about 60 mph. My current Bolt shoots like a real arrow from 0 to 60 but gets sluggish after that. So, I would consider getting a dual motor version.
    And... reasonable pricing please!!!

The digital side mirror is a good idea, we do see this in EVs sold in Europe and S.Korea, for example. However, local laws/regulations would dictate the availability of this feature.

As a happy owner of a Bolt euv, I'm looking forward to the new one; it needs a heat pump, at least as an option.

Hello David, besides the Heat Pump, what else would you expect as improvements in the next-gen model? Perhaps a bigger boot? Would love to hear your wishlist, if you have one!

    • @davidrandall2742
      @davidrandall2742 Před 6 měsíci +1

@TopElectricSUV -- I think GM should keep the Bolt simple, fwd, and low-priced, as the Equinox ev can be more complicated. My list:
      - Keep it the same size and dimensions, but maybe make the hatch area/boot three inches longer.
      - 300+ mile range.
      - At least somewhat faster charging, without sacrificing battery life.
      - Make a heat pump an option, as it's not needed in warmer climates.
      - put the brake lights back where the pre-facelift Bolt had them.
      - A limited-slip diff, electronic or gear-driven like a Quaife.
That's really about, as the new Bolt should stay basic and accessible.

@@davidrandall2742 300 miles (EPA-est.) of range with the LFP battery tech from 2024-25 would be a bit expensive for a car of the Bolt's segment and price positioning, but all the other aspects you've discussed are on our wishlist as well!

Hello Rod! You mean Sodium Ion battery? Don't think that technology is on GM's radar, nothing at least made public. The next-gen Bolt will use Iron-based cells (LFP), as we've talked about in the video. Hope this helps :-)

I'm a 23' EUV owner. Having this car now for a little over a month in the Canadian winter, I think I would like a heat pump option also and CarPlay will be a deal breaker for me. I really love my EUV but by the time the new gen comes out there will be more models in the Bolt's price range and most will have CarPlay. Apple, Google, Microsoft have been making great software for decades. Let them run with it. Why replace it? I'll tell you why, Subscriptions. GM wants you to subscribe to features that rely on their software. The companies who avoid this will sell more cars.

Most of your predictions look safe, but I don't believe the $25k entry-level price. That's below the current price, and inflation typically only goes in one direction. Tesla was promising a $25k vehicle (two-door) in the next few years, but they've since raised the projected price to $27k.

If new first time buyers can get up to 10K off the MSRP with there Federal and State Rebates, new owners might be able to get at least the entry level trim for
35K out the door, a lot depends on those state incentives, if our Federal Govt was smart, they would offer an additional 2500.00 in tax saving rebates to get more ICE cars impounded
    and gone from the planet.
