- The Minnesota Timberwolves, due to an All NBA season from Anthony Edwards and a DPOY season from Rudy Gobert, finished the season as the third seed in the Western Conference only behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Denver Nuggets and positioned themselves for a battle with the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix seemed destined for the Play In Tournament with an extremely difficult schedule to wrap up the year, but they stayed afloat with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal carrying them past other six seed hopefuls like the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and New Orleans Pelicans. While Minnesota has been better most of the year, the Phoenix Suns may just be the nightmare matchup and have given them so many problems throughout the year. While the Timberwolves had a historic year, it may all be about to come crumbling down. So, let's talk about it.

Im hoping this series gives us more than the season finale game. Rooting for the Wolves, though i cant say I'm overly confident

One thing to mention about the Suns 4th quarter net rating woes is that the first 2/3 of the year they had a terrible bench. So a combination of the bench opening the fourth AND in garbage time the bench seeing the team’s lead plummet/deficit sky rocket when the game is already won or lost is the main reason why their net rating was so bad. But after the deadline they got a lot better and now that Beal is healthy they have 1 more starter who can run with the bench more minutes. As you said, lately their 4th quarter net rating became very good. That’s why. Plus in the playoffs we all know the starters play more minutes and rotation shrinks, So people using that net rating as a negative on KD and Booker simply are taking an out of context number and running with it.
Fax people are looking too much at net rating and not enough at win loss. The last time the suns lost a game that they were leading going into the 4th was back in January in Orlando.
Just remember DEFENSE Wins championships!
The Timberwolves give up close to the most midrange jumpers in the league. You can’t do that against the Suns, who have KD, Booker, and Beal. The Timberwolves will also need to rely on Ant to carry their offense, and it’s not like the Suns are paper thin defensively(they’ve been floating around the tenth best defense all season.)
Better offense > Good defense.
The Suns have had no problem killing Minny’s No. 1 defense and I do not anticipate them changing their defensive game plan after an entire season of it working in their favor. It’s just a tough matchup.

I got Suns in 6. What’s scary about PHX is that not only do they match up with the Wolves well but they also match up with Denver also. Suns can get to the WCF due to just favorable matchups that fit with what they do best

Arguably the best defensive unit in the game in the Wolves vs arguably the most well-balanced team in the West. Both teams are star studded. Going to be a great series. It's easy to lean Suns, but I think this series will go 6-7 games. The Wolves will absolutely NEED to steal at least a game in Phoenix in order to win this series.
The first game will really set the tone on how the series will go. Suns whooped the mavs years ago in regular season but got owned in the playoffs so who knows

Wolves have a better bench, and overall roster. But the suns have gave fits against the wolves.
Suns don’t have a deep rotation unlike the wolves but somehow the wolves struggle and don’t fight against the suns. We’re really going to see what steps Ant is going to take in the series and see if Finch can pull his cards right. If the wolves do lose, it will be an easy offseason.

@@haakonlien7107 They have the Nuggets to thank. They clearly didn't want the 3rd spot. They didn't have the tie breaker against both the Thunder and Timberwolves. So the only way they wouldn't get 3rd seed is if they won. Thats why both Murray and Jokic suited up. Otherwise they would've sat the game out like many teams were doing with their stars.

Tough series. Even if best defenders are on Booker, Beal, Durant they spread the floor create the double team and kick it to Grayson or other 3 point shooters. Dealing with that for a quarter you switch it up stop the double team then Durant, Booker, Beal feast. If Ant gets going that's an issue for Phx but is it enough. One word for this series. Fortitude. Which team wants it more

Based on the rosters and the games they have played, makes you think the Suns would lose more than 1 game to the Wolves? Wolves have struggled to score points in these games. Also, couldn't defend the Suns.

Also, I get the Suns are good and on paper they kill the wolves based on their 3 match ups this year, but if they were that lethal they wouldn’t be hovering around a play in seed for close to the entire season. The Wolves scheme has been proved better as they were only 1 game out of the first seed, and it was only because KAT got injured. If the Wolves can play their best ball and go in confident, I don’t see why they don’t make Phoenix adjust to THEIR style of play rather it being the other way around. 1. while ant did fall off in some of these games, the rest of the team shot horribly from the 3(only 30% while they usually shoot 38%)
2. while the suns did win all of those games, the team shot incredibly from 3(over 45%)
3pt shooting is going to really be the crux of this series, and I don't think the suns have actually guarded the wolves better from 3, but rather the wolves just missed. And while the suns will take advantage of the lack of midrange defense, I also think their defense is not that good, and if the wolves are actually able to shoot well, they'll outscore the pure midrange shooting from the stars.

I'm gonna pick the Timberwolves in 6. Both teams have their own questions and issues, but I think that Minnesota will lean on their defense to win the series, which usually transfers well into postseason play. I think that they'll go into the series with a different approach, having learned from their mistakes against the Suns during the regular season. They have the depth and physical attributes to make things difficult for the Suns. The Suns may have bigger name talent, more (deep) playoff experience, and they do have the Timberwolves's number; however, I think that the Wolves' depth and defense will decide the series imo.
Defense dont matter when a 7'-0" forward named Kevin Wayne Durant gets hot. Nobody in the league can block his shot.
