The great thing too is that the principle of lift here is derived from density and buoyancy, meaning you can afford to carry around a significant weight of compressed helium so long as you have enough volume in the inflated balloons to offset it. An old idea tried by the Germans in ww2. They had a canister of hydrogen that was good for around 3 fills of thier 'balloon'. The 'balloon however was instead tubes and pockets made as part of the backpack. The backpack could be rolled out as a matress or pillow. Problems with leaks, flammable hydrogen gas and the weight of the canisters that held the hydrogen meant the idea was eventually scrapped.
This is helium not hydrogen
@@dread8841 You don't say..? The germans used hydrogen with the exact same idea.
Why would the weight of the canisters be a problem if this solution solves weight as a problem?
@samuel97120 its because its compressed to around 200 bar, so has 200 times the weight, instead of being lighter than air haha
@@yamyam263 The gas doesn't have enough lift to compensate for the weight of the canisters and then on top of that the rucksack itself.
They would have needed a more lightweight vessel, for which the materials maybe weren't available back then, and that would also potentially raise a problem with durability in field conditions.
