    I just bought the Stentor 1550. I'm an adult beginner and it's really too much violin for me but I love it and plan to grow into it. I'm already making progress.

    I seriously appreciate the time and effort you put into this video. This is exactly the sound Ive been looking for. I will be a adult beginner for stringed instrument. Ive been waffling on taking the leap because I know the time and dedication it takes to learn an instrument but that price and sound make it hard to pass up. Now I just need to practice to make it sound as lovely as you can lol.

    Thanks for your review Alison. I have been playing a Stentor 2 now for a couple of months and loved it. However just something about the Stentor Conservatoire that just always made me want one ever since I started researching violins.. I finally got one, secondhand which has never been played. And for once the buyer really wasn't lying, it really Hadn't been played. Had to rosin the bow for a while lol.. And WOW, WOW WOW!!! Its a dream come true. It sounds amazing. The factory fitted strings actually sound really lovely, its so warm and velvety. I have ordered some Piastrao Tonica strings for when I need to change them. Still can't believe I got it fir £95, delivered. Your review made me confirm it was the violin I would now use for many years to come. Will be playing it tonight at a place I used to go to, (now it's via Zoom). Will be playing The Bridal Irish Jig.
    I would recommend this violin 100%.
    I own the Stentor Student I, 2 and now this. I personally felt the 1 , I had grown out of fairly quickly but I had to learn all over again. With the Stentor 2 becuase the bridge was different. Anyway, enough if my ramblings on, I'm off to practice now and once again thank you!!!😊

    What would be the stentor you would recommend as holiday violin? My violin is an extremely high quality liuther made violin and I am way too afraid to bring it with me. I was considering the Stentor Arcadia, the Conservatoire II and the Verona. Please advise. Ps: I am a very enthusiastic adult beginner

      Im not really familiar with those other ones as I have not played them. If its just a holiday violin, I wouldn't worry too much since you'll likely just be using it to maintain rather than improve whilst on holiday.

    I'm wanting to upgrade from my Stentor Student 1 violin. I was looking at a few of your reviews, and I'm now between upgrading to this one - the Stentor Conservatoire, or the Cecilio CVN-600 violin that you reviewed about a year ago. I was wondering if you would be able to tell me which violin has a nicer sound in your opinion and could possibly go a bit farther as I get better at playing the violin so I wouldn't have to upgrade again as soon. Thank you very much for all that you do with your reviews and your youtube lessons, I haven't been able to afford lessons, but I've wanted to play the violin since I was a child and because of you it's now been possible for me to learn at home :)

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 9 lety +5

      Darlene Wilson They are probably about the same, but the 600 is much cheaper. As much as I like the Stentor range, I think they are all good quality, but over priced and you can find other less expensive violins that are almost exactly the same.
      The SC and 600 are almost the same, but they are still both student violins. Although the quality of both is a huge step up from the cheaper violins, there isnt really much of a tone/expression etc in either. If you want a particular tone or sound form a violin, then you will need to spend upwards of about $1,000 in my opinion.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 7 lety

      I have not played the Messina so I cant comment on it. It should be a good violin however, as Stentor are a good brand, but the price not does always reflect the quality as they are quite expensive violins. Your best bet would be to try the Graduate, Conservatoire and the Messina (if possible) to see if the difference in price is worth it to you. Even though you may not be a professional, or that great at the violin as yet, you WILL know by now the difference between a rubbish, good and better violin. Those 3 I mentioned will kick the ass of your CVN200 thats for sure as they are all many steps higher than the cvn200. Hope that helps.

    Hi Alison! I'm going to buy my first violin and I had in mind to buy the Stentor II (1500) - it seems to be nice and has a good price - but now I hesitate, I can afford both Stentor II (1500) and Stentor Conservatoire but was wondering if buying the Stentor Conservatoire instead of the other was worth it taking in account that the Stentor II is nice and cheaper and even though I can afford both the price gap between the two is quite large for me. I'm lost!

      The gap in price between the 2 is quite large from what I remember (over £100?), and Im not sure its totally worth it...having said that its a better violin than the SII. Its clearer and smoother and so fourth but £100 better Im not sure? You could try the Stentor Graduate as that is still better than the SII, but the price is a little friendlier.

    Before buying my cheap STAGG, I was absolutely looking at the STENTORs in my JustMusic catalog. They already made a good impression, so now your opinion on it helps a lot. I have that big store here in Berlin and maybe I will try a STENTOR in a couple years. Right now I think my STAGG is okay, after also replacing its clumsy bow yesterday. That thing was so terrible, that I consider myself a beginner since yesterday evening. It was better than a crowbar, but still a monstrosity as I feel now. Considering the price for this STENTOR, its bow can't be the real thing, as you kept recommending, or am I unjust in this point?

    • @channelterminatedbyuser
      @channelterminatedbyuser Před 9 lety

      Ex Tempore Here's another argument to wait for me personally: In things violin tones I'm totally inexperienced and flat-out dumb. If I went to our Berliner JustMusic store to try out expensive trumpets I could find the ideal instrument for myself. I don't think I could do the same in the violin field-to me they would all sound like violins and that's all I could judge. In my relationship to my new STAGG, im still in the stage of early love-glad to have a violin anyway and to me she sounds beautifully.
      I started on tenor horn at age 13 and when I was 16 my teacher chose my Yamaha trombone. I was not in the music store when he did that, it was an agreement between my parents and him. Later it showed his ear had been right, because experienced trombonists said she sounded like the Yamahas in price classes way above her's.
      Today I make decisions like that myself because I have developed ideas about my own ideal sound and tone. Nobody could pick the right violin for me today, I just have to develop a mature ear in things violins. If Alison would play my STAGG right now, it would kinda sound like the ideal instrument to me. Now, with Dominant synthetic strings, Pirastro Gold rosin and my super-lightweight self-tinkered bow, I have nothing to complain. In 3 years I will be able to pick my ideal violin.....
      Speaking this out here absolutely helps me to make up my mind on preplanning. It also might help other grown beginners who ask themselves whether their cheap violin was the right decision.

      Can you please point me to the comment where I said 1 year ago that Stentors and Cecilios were good - I would like to revise what I wrote?
      Opinions change all the time and I reviewed all the Cecilio and Stentor violins 6-7 years ago which is a very long time ago.
      Sadly, the production quality has gone down in both brands and I have subsequently not recommended them for many years now.
      I recommend the Fiddlerman violins these days as they are of super quality which matches their price point. Their customer service is also excellent.
      The original poster of this thread (Esther Okorougo) mentioned they are an intermediate player and was looking for something better. I simply responded personally to them advising that they see a violin luthier and get something that will suit them better than the 2 options they presented with me as those were very basic and beginner violins.
      This information was aimed at them personally - it was not a generalised statement to anyone else to take out of context.
      I still stand by my current opinion that Stentors and Cecilios are not great violin and they are just 'ok' to the very very beginner.
      Anyone else who is of intermediate standard and higher, will be taking the violin more seriously and therefore should be utilising that skill level and buying something more antique - hence my comment/reply to Esther.
      Finally...antique violins are not as expensive as you think....

    I own the Stentor Conservatoire myself (it was my first acoustic violin) and I use it with Thomastik Dominant strings. In my opinion it has a nice tone when it comes to the lower notes (g-, d- and a-string), but has a nasty tone when played on the high e-string. It sounds as if the instrument isn't up to the job of handling higher frequencies. I actually once restringed it to a 3/4 viola (low c-string) and it did cope much better with that one than with the high e-string. Maybe you can get a better sounding e-string when you're willing to experiment with different e-strings (e.g. Pirastro).
    I think this should be considered before purchasing the Stentor Conservatoire.

      I recently thoroughly reviewed all 6 of the Fiddlerman violins on my channel if you want to check them out.
      If you want a decent violin that isn’t too basic but not too fancy and also doesn’t cost a fortune, then I can recommend the Artist as it’s right in the middle and has a fantastic sound.
      The Concert which is above that for me, is quite loud. Great if you like that.
      The Apprentice under the Artist, may be too basic if you plan on sticking with it for a while.
