In 2019, ESPN 2 invited CTWC to produce a segment for "The Ocho." It was a watershed moment for Classic Tetris, bringing in thousands of new fans through a major cable network appearance. This is the segment that was produced as it originally aired, split into three parts.
We realize most of this is game tape that has already appeared on our channel. However, there has been a ton of demand to see the segment from those in the community who did not have access to ESPN 2. So here it is for all those who are curious about the first Tetris tournament seen on national television!

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry

Lmaoo they cut the “Mom? Sister? Mom? Sister? It’s Asian I can’t tell” 😂
weird choice too because both of the commentators were Asian as well. It was obviously light-hearted in contxext.
@@NvrPhazed but it's a good call because things on TV should be assumed out of context :p
@@BIGWUNuvDbunch They shouldn't be assumed out of context. That's just what you and everyone has gotten used to. It's sad really. That's just media influence. Taking offense where none was intended and taking out of proportion pretty much everything.
His sister is HOT!
@@WaltRBuck It's far easier to cut one line that's easily misconstrued than it is to convince millions of people to stop taking offense from things. *shrug* Sucks, but it's simple math.
i love how as soon as jonas tops out he starts cheering on his opponent.
"We realize that most of this is game tape that has already appeared on our channel."
Please, I saw this play out in real time on Twitch and I'm still not tired of watching it.
Too bad ESPN cut out most of the trophy presentation. Jonas' speech at the end was epic. Total class act.
You can really feel that winning "Boom! Tetris for Joseph!" Great commentating.
I've watched this a few times already. Props for not choking in the crucial part of that match. Being inexperienced against someone with the prestige of Jonas had to be intimidating.
Joseph 2018: True prodigy, slaying dragons
Joseph 2020: *BOATFOY*
Boatfoy is amazing, what do you mean
I love what espn is doing with esports, hopefully this exposes Tetris and other smaller esports to more people hopefully growing them and making them more accessible to people
YourPalMal finally a good comment that’s not “first” or “I’m soooo early”
they also covered the CTWC 2019
TETRIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER
Sauranable nobody liked that
@Sauranable fortnite is for fucken incel 10 year olds
Thank you, Jonas. You were such a strong player, and your positive energy has spread so far into the Tetris community as a whole. Rest in peace. We'll miss you.
They cut out "It's asian I can't tell" 7:03
😂 I noticed
lmao
Rip
what hurts is that Joseph gave up on a perfect clear on level 22 to continue setting up.
Well, perfect clears don’t give a special bonus in NEStris, so it would have done him no good.
I'll never forgive ESPN for editing out the greatest line uttered during the greatest CTWC in history!
I just went and watched a bunch of the Japan tournaments and then came back to watch this... And the level of skill Joseph shows here is absolutely INSANE to me now that I've watched a bunch of lower-tier gameplay.
Is it bad I can remember all of the commentary of the last round of this matchup
I've watched that match a couple times 😂
After watching both players score 1.1m at GDQ, I'm wondering if we'll see the same finals matchup this year.
I just think that the concept of ESPN Ocho is absolutely hilarious, I never imagine that after Dodgeball that it would become a real channel (of sorts.)
I'm now training on pc until i fix my nes. Maybe see you in a few years :D this was the finals that got me into tetris again. hope my nearly 30yo fingers can do it XD
That'd be really cool, especially since the tail end of the decade saw a resurgence of up and coming players.
@@genesisfgc absolutely. But have to train hard, and maybe train some hypertapping too. DAS isn't the dominating method anymore. The skills are with those who use hypertapping, joseph, koryan, greentea, and a bunch of new players that will dominate the scene.
Wait, this isn’t Batfoy?? Wrong clips
What do you mean? The video clearly shows the match between Batfoy and Batfoy.
are you blind or something? the match was obviously Batfoy vs Batfoy.
Boatfoy*
wen nug im sorry guys, it was a misunderstanding😔
No surprise, Joseph's been number 1 for about 12 months now. What a player
Shame that Jonas topped out this game. Imagine a double maxout in that final. That would've been insanely fun to watch.
Joseph vs Greentea 2019 has got you covered.
good players
1:07 so i don't forget
Any idea if any Koryan/Greentea merch will be added to the site?
where's the long bar!?!?
They cut off the part of "is asian, icant tell" haha
Roses are red
Violets are blue
I click on the video
and there's already 1 view :(
We all had this feeling
Poo poo to you you
Jesus never was this early
I'm super early
Asen Asuzagawa I was earlier lol
most of you can't take your eyes off Joseph's play field. just admit it
Dude I try so hard
can I be first to a ctwc vid
Guess you're the first, so yeah
I was second lol but gg
