    The reason that the Aprilia Moto 6.5 looks unique when compared to Aprilia’s other bikes is because it was a one off outsourced design by Philippe Stark. He was a popular French industrial designer during that era and he was given design exercises far afield from his usual endeavors so Aprilia had him design a ‘city bike’.

      The designer Philippe Starck is not a automotive designer and made something different. He managed to create a own line without that triangular front down plastic overkil that was initiated by Hans A. Muth with the BMW R100RS and the Suzuki Katana. That style went crazy and lead to the KTMs with their sharp design. so sharp you won't want to approach these bikes without protective wear. That actually appeals to a lot of people, not me.

    9:15 I was sitting at a light in Vancouver in about 1979. A noise came up beside me.
    It was a HD model of some desperate alphabetical scrabble mistake. The rider was a long haired bearded hippy and his Ol' Lady perched on the back was a Twiggy look alike. The bike was loaded down with camping gear. It was mildly chopped with an extended springer fork. Buddy asked me if this was the road to the ferry terminal. I said it was. He thanked me and we pulled away as the light turned green.
    The bike was rust from top to bottom, fender to fender and rim to rim. Even the spokes were rusty. It had mud and dirt and shit on every surface. But it ran and sounded great.
    Rat Rod wasn't a thing back then. But if there was, this bike was the poster child.

  • @geraldscott4302
    @geraldscott4302 Před 2 lety +4

    BMW has made a lot of ugly bikes, especially the newer ones, but by far the ugliest was the 1991 K1. For Honda, It is without a doubt the 2017 and up Rebels. I mean, there is ugly, and then there is UGLY. And the 2017 and up Rebels are without a doubt the UGLIEST motorcycles I have ever seen in the U.S. What the hell were they thinking? Yes, the Madura was not a pretty bike, but when it comes to downright ugly, that has to go to the early '80s Katana. That is what today is known as the Harley Road Glide, and that fairing is ugly. But the same bike with the Street Glide fairing on it is gorgeous. So it's just the fairing. To me (and I own a 1989 FXRS Low Rider) all older Harleys are beautiful. The Pan America and the Sportster are hideous. And Harley had ruined so many bikes by dipping the whole bike in matte black paint. I like bright shiny paint and chrome. Matte black looks like primer to me. It's just a big black blob. You can't see the lines. The Sportster Iron models are ridiculous looking. The ugliest Yamaha would have to be the early '80s Vision 550, or the early 90s GTS1000 with the RADD front end. The ugliest Kawasaki has to be the Vulcan S, which is a close second behind the 2017 and up Honda Rebels. I like all the old original Indians. The first Indians that Polaris came out with were. They strongly resembled the original Chief, with that big full front fender. Then came the Scout, which looked like some kind of industrial machine. Super ugly. Then they totally destroyed the Chief, they don't even have that beautiful front fender anymore. And they have started the YBOB thing (Yet Another Blacked Out Bike) The blacked out fad has gone far enough. It needs to go away, and go away NOW. That Triumph looks a lot like a Buell, all of which were ridiculously ugly. But besides the bikes I mentioned above, perhaps the ugliest bikes of all is every single crotch rocket ever made. Every one of them is disgustingly ugly. These bikes started in 1985, with the Suzuki GSXR, and the Kawasaki Ninja 600 and 900, and they have been getting uglier and uglier ever since. Not to mention the are virtually unrideable with bars that feel like they are attached to the front axle and footpegs where the rear turn signals should be. Basically, 99% of the time, the newer a bike is, the uglier it is.

    The Pacific Coast, was for people that don't ride, wanted a motorcycle, but without being "a motorcyclist". It was a smart, comfortable, useful design that appealed to bean counters, NASA scientists, and real estate agents. On the Pacific Coast, no one saw you as a rider with a bad attitude, nor a speed freak, nor a 50 to 60 year old "touring" guy to accomplish his bucket list, across the United States.
    For its day, it was a very thoughtfull, non threatening way, for people to ride. Remember, this is during the same age, as all computers being beige.

  • @seadog686
    @seadog686 Před 2 lety +6

    The Honda PC800 Pacific Coast was a beautifully styled tourer for its time and its sculpted lines are still easy on the eye - particularly to the non-riders who don't find it “intimidating”.
    Another aerodynamic design was/is the H-D Road Glide. Its “shark-nosed” fairing made it a great long distance tourer that was easy to do “Iron-bottom” (1K miles or more) runs on. Ironically, many non-riders would mistakenly refer to my two CVO Road Glide Limiteds (FLTRUSE) as “Gold Wings”.
    I generally agree with you on the “sport tourers” and their styling over the past several years. When I finally broke down and got an actual “Gold Wing” it was a 2018 model year, the one where Honda unfortunately decided to go “Sport Touring”. Yes it was ugly and its fairing was next to useless - I wish Vetter was still around so I could have replaced it with a more effective one.
    Lastly, Indian's Chief Vintage valanced fenders flow along with the rest of the traditional lines of that bike, recreating the characteristic charm of the 1930's era American motorcycles. Of course I've only been a rider for 60 years - so whadda I know?

This monstrosity had vertically stacked headlights that would have scared children if they saw it coming at them.
