The late mediaeval and early modern periods were marked by a widespread fear of witchcraft and the subsequent persecution of individuals, primarily women, who were accused of being not only ‘witches’, but those who went as far as to copulate with the devil himself. The "Malleus Maleficarum" played a significant role in promoting and legitimising such persecution. After being spearheaded by infamous inquisitors Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, the text, often referred to as the "Hammer of Witches," was used as a manual for witch-hunters, providing them with instructions on identifying, interrogating, and punishing witches in the 15th century.

“Witch hunting” was often seen as synonymous with “poisoner hunting” (“witch” means “poisoner” in many languages). Women were often (sometimes correctly) accused of poising their husbands.
The reasons why women did this obviously varied. Some men were certainly abusive and their wives saw this as an escape. But there were also cases where women simply wanted their inheritance early (arsenic, a deadly poison, was called “inheritance powder”) and the husbands were entirely innocent.
In real life, the truth is always more complex than blanket phrases like “women are evil” or “witch hunting was merely superstition and misogyny”.
It’s true, that a lot of “wise women“ could make poisons on top of other types of brews. However the fact that some women poisoned their husbands is irrelevant to the entire witch hunting phenomena. People that hunted, witches literally believed in certain women having supernatural powers and communing with the devil.
Most of the ones accused were not guilty of killing their husbands and had nothing to inherit anyhow.

Most burned were Christian doctors male or female... witches were more feet on the ground trying to take care of families in thier villages... they too were of coursed burned.
