About point 8: When I was very young, my mother purchased the deck plans for the TOS Enterprise for me when I was sick. There was a little booklet included that explained a lot of things. The carpeting doubled as a traction surface (think Velcro), in case there was a loss of gravity on the ship. The story is that they never used it that way (even in the movies where they resorted to magnetic boots), because of the possible conflict with MGM's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I appreciate that they're going to Star Trek Online and pulling some of its best ideas into canon. The gorgeous Odyssey class and various other designs that first saw their debut there are finally getting their day in the sun. I do believe there is a defensible reason to use carpet on a starship. It provides an anti-slip surface, cushions falls, and quiets footsteps.

Right? :D It's almost like they were able to watch Disney utterly destroy Star Wars every chance they got by doing what DISNEY wants to do without giving a SHIT about their fans. Kathleen Kennedy and her group of minions ruined everything about the new Star Wars Cannon and stopped releasing ANY content that's in the old cannon except for a God awful (Gameplay wise) MMO that's only awesome for the story which is great. Paramount saw we weren't happy with everything about discovery. They LISTENED to us and gave us the best parts of discovery by Giving us SNW and taking Disco so far into the future. Now we have a much better Disco and a phenomenal Captain Pike and Spock with a phenomenal return of the original enterprise and some others like Cadet Uhura and Dr. Mbenga and Nurse Chapel an dI liked some new characters its shame about Hemmer. Really liked him maybe we can see him in the future (future for us/past for him lol) but I'm getting off track. Disney heard everything the fans asked for and consistently gave us the opposite and then blamed reasons other than the incompetency of the one in charge, Kathleen Kennedy.
      Disney HEARD. Paramount LISTENED.
Also Paramount also seems to have more of a grasp on what the fans exactly like as a starting point. just look at star trek picard for example. So much perfectly done fan service with Dukat and Martok's and whoever else's skeletons in Picards office, Admiral Sisko still being around in that timeline and so much more.

I can't speak for others but regarding Insurrection, describing it as "an episode of The Next Generation" isn't quite right. It's not trying to be "an" episode of TNG, it's trying to be EVERY episode of TNG. Too many things going on and as a result even with the extended run time, it doesn't fully mesh together. Much like Picard Season 2 really. A lot of interesting story ideas happening but they don't quite link into a single, coherent whole.

I don't mind that the new Stargazer didn't get a letter tacked onto the registry, since the new registry itself seems to be the callback to Picard's Stargazer since that one was NCC-2893 and the new one being NCC-82893. It totally makes sense that the addition of letters is reserved for ships that have some kind of legacy behind them, and I love that the USS Voyager is one of those ships.

If the new Stargazer is also a refit, it's interesting that it is considered Sagan-class and not Constellation-refit, or even "Stargazer-class".

It is not the same ship because you cannot tell me how we get from the Constellation Class to this....Are we just replacing saucer sections and drive sections and whatnot. This is not the Enterprise refit - which has a similar shape, and honestly, the history of those ships were, they spent so much time and energy on making them compact, the reason they got such an extensive rebuild was they were overbuilt in the first place. Modest shape changes are as retconned as the uniform insignias (remember, in TOS each ship had a different logo, the Delta was only for the Enterprise, but this was retconned into being the Starfleet logo)

CARPET IS A MUST and this is why: Shiny floors are smooth floors, slippery. Considering battles, other disasters and just random space related reasons of turbulence, carpet floors offer better traction for the polished shine of Star Fleet standard uniform shoes. Ever seen the shoes? Basically dress shoes with no treads to speak of... So would you rather slip and fall when the ship shakes a little bit or would you rather have carpet that gives the rubber of the shoe a bit more grip helping you stay in place?

If it's the same ship, why the new registry and class? Those are indicative of a replacement, not upgrades.
(Edit:) As an aside, there were over 30 years between the recovery of the Stargazer and Picard season 2. Refits make sense. They made sense for the original Enterprise, after all.
Also, there are advantages to carpeted floors. You're less likely to slip during an action sequence with additional friction. Than again, Starfleet's boot choices don't always make sense.

    • @swnews4u161
      @swnews4u161 Před rokem +2

STICK TO YOUR GUNS - its not a refit. Since it was recovered, they had two incursions of the Borg, the Dominion War, and the creation of the copy and paste fleet. There was the development of numerous ship classes. And there was a need for older training ships for the new classes. There is absolutely no reason to retrofit the Constellation Class Stargazer into this new ship class. The Constellation, if it survived any battle, would likely be a supply running ship in some way-out sector, or turned into a trainer for the Academy. Starfleet would have been better off pulling one of the Galaxy frames out of storage, and creating a new star drive for the saucer of the D (which I know, was destroyed in some book) than retrofit the Stargazer this much....

Shame the Stargazer doesn't have a Stargazer Gundam model kit in the ready room. As the Gundam was named after the ship in TNG.

I can't really buy the new Stargazer as a refit of the original. It's too radical a departure. If it really were just the result of successive upgrades, then there's a lot of missing middle ships we never saw, and how did it end up with a different ship class and registry number?
However, I'm willing to meet Terry in the middle here. There's a middle ground between "completely unrelated new ship" and "the exact same ship with upgrades." And that is: maybe there are a few symbolic pieces of the previous Stargazer in the new Stargazer's construction. Like, build a new ship, but salvage a nice bulkhead or a comfy seat from the old ship and install it in the new ship's observation lounge or mess hall. Glue a plaque on. That seems like an appropriately naval-feeling tradition for Starfleet to have.

It makes sense to make starships modular. This would mean you could use the same spaceframe,, but upgrade as new technology emerges. This would extend the lifetime of any given ship, improve repair/refit time, reduce labor "costs", improving mission specific capabilites, also improving repair speed and ship to ship compatibility.

I was about to say this is a totally different ship however in thinking about it more, the only strange thing they did was give it a different registry...which makes no sense. If it is actually a refit (with the foundation being the old Stargazer) then it's the same ship. Remember the Enterprise was completely changed between TOS and the Star Trek movies and initially did not get an A......again if its truly the same ship....

Yeahhhh but if it were just a bunch of refits, it wouldn't have a different registry. Reference gets made to the refits that resulted in the TMP-look Enterprise, and sure enough, no new registry because it wasn't a new ship. Yet with the Stargazer, it /does/ have a new registry, meaning it's a different ship

I STRONGLY disagree about the lack of carpets.
'Normal' warships don't have them for one very important reason that starships don't have to worry about.
    WATER.
Waterlogged carpets can get VERY slippery, they hold moisture and get mouldy.
This is why military vessels are replete with non-slip paint.
    It's also a cost-reduction measure.
Money's been done away with in the 24thC.
Mr ship designer's talking out of his sphincter, he must have been on an Ace Ventura binge.

The Stargazer is a new ship. Period. Its not a retrofit of the Constellation Class version. The broom concept is bunk, because we are talking about spaceframes and warp nacelles. The proof is the original dedication plaque was not placed on the new bridge, and the registry numbers are different. IF THIS WAS THE SAME SHIP, the plaque would have been installed in the new bridge module, while the ship would have retained its registry. The only way you get a new registry is a new build of the ship, and if anyone tells you otherwise they are just lying to cover up a mistake.

    Loved _Insurrection._
The Copy/Paste fleet is annoying but makes perfect sense in-universe, if Starfleet has taken a major loss to their ships. Find a decent enough design which is _easy to build fast_ and make dozens of them. Real life examples are the Fletcher destroyers, Essex carriers, Liberty Ships, etc. They don't have to look good to get the job done. The Curiosity & variants are the Camry/Accord/F-150/777 of modern Srarfleet. Boring, the right tool, perfectly designed and no one cares about them. They're appliance ships.
