What I found beautiful was that it's only when Ember and Wade are together that they show they can create something beautiful: Ember creates beautiful glassware, Wade causes a rainbow to form. I think that summed up what a good relationship is all about: Separately you can get along and survive, together you can create true beauty in the world.

Dude. That was a fantastic piece of analysis. You uncovered layers of this film that I didn’t even pick up on, and I already liked the movie a lot. The subtleties elevate the film to be more than meets the eye. It’s a shame that Elemental isn’t doing that great financially. I think it’s MUCH better than people are giving it credit for. For me, it’s a borderline top 10 Pixar film l. I was very pleasantly surprised, and I highly recommend everyone else to give it the support it deserves and check it out

I agree, this does have a lot do with immigrants as well as interracial couples as we are a couple like this. My daughter was a really wanted to go and there are undertones that can also be related to immigrants such as a lot of times they’re treated like fire. My daughter picked up on this there’s also a lot of clash between families, I wasn’t however prepared for the emotional part of it. I have post traumatic stress syndrome and I relate a lot to a lot of the struggle that fire deals with. I thought I was the only one that saw it. I also saw the other ones that you are talking about I just didn’t think iMovie would be that deep.

does this number mean how many watched it? how many liked it so much they saw it more than once? does it mean ticket prices are rising because of inflation? How many dsliked it? How many Tickets were cheap? How many were expensive? How many are waiting to watch it on a streaming service they are already paying for? How many want physical Copies? How many theatres were open? Showing the film?Where were they? How many tickets were sold anyway?

I honestly, to my surprise, actually enjoyed watching this movie. While not perfect, it's still very fun to watch; and some scenes were emotional enough to touch me. The animation is unique, the story is good, the music is catchy, and the characters are fun. And the chemistry between Wade and Ember is pretty believable, because it does take its time to develop it - even if you can tell almost right away. And I suppose their personalities almost match their elements: Ember has trouble with her fiery temper, while Wade tends to be a sympathy cryier. To me, Wade and Emver have one of the most realistic relationships in a Disney movie, because while you can tell there is something between them, they still start off as good friends, and confirm their love near the end of the movie; thus becoming a real couple. They say opposites attract, and that's very true in their case - but they also have things in common. The moment when Ember met Wade's family was fun to watch because it showed how far society has come to accepting others; and yes, the game where Wade made Ember cry for the first time was very touching because it what sparked their true feeling for each other.
It would have been nice to hear more about Wade's father; like what can of man he was, what he did for a living, and what caused their relationship to drift away. It also would have been nice to see more of Clod, he definitely should of had a bigger role. I also wish they explained more of the crack in the dam - did it just get old, or was it caused by something? The part where Ember and Wade have an argument over their differences, that I also wish could of had a bit more attention. I mean, Ember got her say on how she feels, but Wade never really explained his point of view. Maybe he could have told Ember that just because he comes from luxury, he never truly did what he wanted because of everything his father expected of him growing up - and his dying wish was for Wade to find his own path. Also, Wade could have told Ember that the reason his family has money is because of how much work they put into making a life for their families.
Overall, I did enjoy the movie. And I actually thought that Wade died in the end - but it's Disney; they don't do that. And I'm actually glad they didn't. It would have been nice to see more of Ember and Wade's childhood. Maybe have them cross each other's paths multiple times, but never actually interacted. If there's ever a sequel...I'd watch it. Maybe it could be about Wade and Ember getting married and starting a family.

  • @medtle1
    @medtle1 Před rokem +17

The way the movie was marketed to the "general" public (a.k.a. non-Asians, especially white people) was completely different from how this movie was marketed in Asian-American spaces. In Asian-American spaces, the movie was marketed as a slice-of-life coming-of-age story with elements of romcom and social commentary in there and based on the director's real-life experiences. Disney marketed it as a "pixar romeo and juliet story mixed with zootopia but with elements", which is completely misleading but I think Disney did that because the executives think "no one" (a.k.a. white people) would watch or relate to a movie that has elements that are coded to be non-white immigrants and that no kid would watch a movie that doesn't have a kid or teen protagonist and they thought marketing "Elemental" that way would avoid what happened to Turning Red (which got so much racist and sexist backlash - even before the movie and trailers were released - just because the protagonist was a teenage Chinese-Canadian girl with female teenage friends who was a human for at least 50% of the movie and the movie made zero effort to pander to the male gaze and incorporated real-life experiences from the director and the writers (who are all Asian women)). I could tell from the story that Ember is Asian-American-coded and that the movie is more of a coming-of-age story than a romcom; especially after learning that the story is based on Peter Sohn's life. Such a shame that the movie did bad at the box office because of the misleading marketing and other reasons. Seems like Disney is trying to bankrupt Pixar so it can combine it with Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Lots of people say it flopped because of it’s simple story and bad marketing, and it speaks for itself, but that’s all on the outside layer. There’s definitely more going on the inside. I can tell they put love and commitment into this, both with the director’s personal story, and the difficulty in animating the characters. Steal The Show is beautiful to hear, the colors pop out of the screen, animation is always great, and the romance between the two is wholesome. Go watch it if you can!

Pixar is trying to bring people to theaters after training families to expect streaming. Just ask around any people with kids, they'll tell you. Elementals however broke the downward trajectory of Pixar; it is now upwards. Usually films drop 50-60% second weekend, Elemental only dropped 35% which is an insanely great number even better than Mario that and the midweek drops being also very small; this means word of mouth is excellent. that is victory for Pixar; it means streaming will make it a lot of money and most importantly families came to see the film and not wait for streaming.

That's not true! Wade and Ember hold hands and then some! It's kinda relatable once you think about it. Two different peoples who have little to no interaction with the other find excuses to avoid and screw the other off based on past misgivings. Is this really a grand metaphor on the complexity of racism? Or is it just a reflection on our world where a bunch of poor saps who find a way pretend to be offended and oppressed at every single general action/world based the memory of past mistakes and tragedies that can't really effect them anymore? Can you think of NO ONE who fits that bill?

They are like less compatible with the other elements but they are not really harmful to each other. I liked that.

I can't watch this video all the way yet cause I haven't got to see it yet, but from what I've heard/seen of it so far I feel like I'm gonna love this movie.
Because of that awful marketing, for a while, it just felt like it was just gonna be cliche and only worth seeking in theaters for the visuals. And so originally I was gonna wait for it to move to Disney + to watch it.
But then I listened to its soundtrack and it sounded so bubbly and beautiful, and even really emotional at times. So I started to look into this movie more. And what do I find? So many people talking about just how good this movie is. And it turns out _I never even knew about its actual plot, THATS HOW FRICKEN BAD THE MARKETING WAS_
I'm gonna go see this in theaters on Sunday, so I'll be back to edit this and add my own review to this comment
Edit: I just watched it and *oh. my. god. Its soo good!*
Yeah it might have the cliche forbidden love story idea but just cause a cliche exists doesn't mean it's bad. As long as it is done right it can make a very well-crafted story, which is exactly what Elemental does.
The thing I love about Ember and Wade’s relationship is just how wholesome it is. There's no toxicity, they take the time to have fun with one another, and _they actually care about each other._
    [BIG SPOILER HERE]
Wade nearly died saving Ember’s life, and even in what he thought were was his final moments, he wasn't even scared. He was admiring Ember’s beauty..

It feels absolutely catered to my interests. I never saw any of the trailers, or watched any videos talking about it since I just thought I'd never get to watch it. Ember and Wade remind me of me and my partner. We met in the university, and we went to a trip together of one day because I needed to go and nobody else could go that day only the two of us. We were not even friends at that point, just had some friends in common, but after we started talking and being in that place we didn’t wanted to split. After the trip ended we went to eat and did a lot of stuff. Later, he needed help with an examen so I studied with him, and that make us an excuse to be toguether more.
Some people complain that the romance in this movie is too fast and unrealistic. But that this doesn’t happen to you doesn’t mean is impossible or unrealistic, it is very similar to what happened to me xD. We had chemistry and were comfortable at each other since the beginning, just because.

I gotta say, I've never been more in love with a Pixar story than I am with Elemental. I'd even put it alongside the golden year greats such as Toy Story 2, Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo, and the Incredibles. I'm not even joking, that's how much I loved this movie. It may surprise many to know that I'm a sucker for animated romance movies, which is my favorite kind of animated movie, and the romance in this film feels like something you'd never expect from Pixar. What the main Walt Disney studio is known for, I feel Pixar did way better in a heartbeat when it comes to the romance department. Despite how cliché the movie is as a rom-com, I feel that the story builds and sets it up so incredibly and realistically. Ember and Wade are officially my most favorite animated movie couple of all time.
I've gotta be honest and say that I desperately hope that Elemental gets some kind of Disney channel sequel series, so we can explore more of the evolution of Ember and Wade's relationship, as well as build more of the world even beyond Element City. If that doesn't happen, then I've got a lot of fan fiction to write. Lol.

I loved every part of this movie. The voice acting was AMAZING, the music, the animation, the dialogue. But mostly I love it because I relate to it. I relate to Wade as a recent college grad and I’ve started to see Ember in both myself and a certain friend. It’s a beautiful, natural love story that’s more than anything- mature. Well I see Wayde and Ember as me and my beloved Bf, we are opossite of each other: I'm the emotional water boy who always is vornolable at the emotional stuff and he is this groundy boy, who has his issues with anger on some point. But no matter how much we are opossites we are love each other and we want to stay by our sides no matter what and making a good memorries. Bad memorries always gonna be in our lives, but they are lessons for what we need to be carefull of. And there's the other stuff that when we gonna probabbly hurt each other, when my bf want to say something, but he is affraid that I'm gonna be mad, but as a patient person I'm always gonna stay patient and listen to him uwu

I wasn’t expecting much from this movie but was pleasantly surprised by how much I was moved by the characters and story. Even my 7 year old caught on to some of the more subtle nuances (he’s also asked to rewatch it nearly every day since it came out on Disney+ so we’ve had plenty of opportunities to catch everything Elemental has to offer. 😂). Overall, I thought that this was a beautifully made movie and definitely holds a special place in our hearts.

The marketing was fantastic for this one. I saw the trailer 6-8 months ago without release date, then heard absolutely nothing, then saw on youtube that it bombed in the box office and thought “oh, when was it released?”.
Glad to see that there’s a small minority on the internet who liked it. As a kid of 1st generation immigrants i found it very relatable, and i liked a lot of the symbolisms and metaphors; but i can understand why it’s too intellectually demanding for today’s generation of movie audience who prefer to watch movies while swiping on their smartphones.

You NAILED it, Finn. An absolutely beautiful movie. Three story lines: Immigrant (My family), family business and who takes over (my family) and a love story. Some slammed that there was three story lines. Sorry if they can't track that. Others slammed it as a $ loser - cost 200 mil, worldwide box office - 487Mil Me.
I watched it in the theater 9 times. When it left I bought six of the large posters, hanging in my gym. Now, I'm looking at my Art of Elemental hardcover book. A little about me. I'm a 72 year old, retired teacher with an animation passion. I give animation presentations to Middle and High school art classes. Love the stuff. Again - You nailed it, Finn.

I love this film... maybe because it's a cinematic masterpiece, or maybe just because it's relatable in my case.
My fiancé and I are the first "biracial" relationship that has ever happened in my family. I'm not afraid to admit that things were super awkward at first. We met over the Internet, so we weren't even able to physically touch for the first year or so. When we finally met, my family was... judgy, to say the least. That was four years ago. We live together now and he's loved just as much by my family as I am. But honestly this movie resonates with me even more than that. Ember's anger issues are something I can relate to on a personal level, and Wade being a respectful (and also a bit sensitive) guy who's there to calm her down and change her point of view, reminds me a lot of my Kevin. I've watched this movie alone, but I really want to watch it with Kev and the family as well. For me, Elemental goes on the favorites list alongside Wall-E.
Glad to have you back on track, Pixar. :)

This is how I feel about Strange World. No one gives that movie two cents of positive notice but its sooo soo good and beautiful and resonating and clever. I think similarly towards Turning Red and Onwards. So while Elemental doesn't mean much to me (I thought the story was overall pretty wholesome and pleasant and the visuals striking but the movie was nothing wildly exciting to me) Its really refreshing to see such a happy response to a movie that keeps undeservably getting trashed.

One of the biggest things I love about this film is that it takes a huge wrecking ball to Toxic Masculinity. Wade's emotions are never looked down upon in the film, and instead reinforces the themes of emotional honesty. Men should never be seen as less masculine for showing their emotions, and his film demonstrates why in spades.

I think elementals resonate with those in a relationship wanting to be better for their partners, a relationship where both parties are doing everything they can to make it work and still are in the second stage trying to make it to the third. It's really specific, they got it bullseye for us wanting to love those who we love.

Lightyear was OK getting 74% critical RT score and that is their worst recently, it was preceded by 3 amazing films all critically acclaimed, all contenders for the Oscars with Soul winning one.
Why is one film "Lightyear" dominating the narrative? It's because dropping films to streaming is the equivalent of direct-to-DVD; can you name Little Mermaid or Aladdin's sequels? nope all were straight-to-DVD. That cheapens the brand in our mind, it dampens the shine after being the standard for excellence.

I love the visuals and world but most importantly I love ember and wade. Just like the relationship both complimented eachother well. Also yea steal the show is still in my head.

Elemental's plot is kinda similar to Encanto. Hear me out. In both movies, the two main families move to a new place where they settle in a new home (in encanto it's the casita, and in elemental the fireplace). Both patriarcs prioritize the well being of the place they live in even before family, In both movies there's a symbolic object that they're trying to protect because it's constantly in danger (the candle and the blue flame), both those symolic objects get destroyed, The climax in both movies happens after an argument, both places (the casita and fireplace) get destroyed, the main character feels at fault for what happens and apologizes when non of this was her fault (Ember and Mirabel, and finally, in both movies the main character is trying to fix something wrong that's going on

I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago and something that spoke out to me (for the first part of the movie at least) is this is a message about racism.
Just... they way everyone else treats those who are Fire, the fact that they wouldn't let Fire people see the Vivisteria flower, the way Earth, Air, and Water treated Ember's parents when they first arrived and looking for a home, and that Water Train always spilling over the bridge as it passes by the shop.
(ok that last one might not count, but they could try and do something to make less splashy, right?)

I actually really liked the overall premise of the show. The world was interesting, the people were unique, and it had A LOT of promise in my opinion. That being said.... yeah, it had a lot of things that just seems completely random, irrational, and didn't make sense. This movie could have been SO much better, but for what we got, I don't regret seeing it. Yet at the same time, I can't feel too much of anything but disappointment. They missed SO many good angles that have made this story amazing. From start to finish, I think they could have made this so much better, and more importantly, make actual sense of their actions, thoughts, and decisions.
I give MASSIVE points for a unique originality and even making it look so good and the world work so well. However, it missed BIG on the way it could have told its story in a more rational way. And I use rational, because I thought the overall story they were going for was great.... but the way they tell it just comes off as nonsensical, ignorant, and more than anything, random.....
