DIY Sheet Metal Folder - Forme Industrious

- Here is a simple Sheet Metal folder, or Brake that can be easily made at home with a few basic tools. The design is fairly common if you look on the inter webs. Despite the fact I used a Metal Lathe, the hinge can be bought off the shelf at most hardware stores. You will need a welder however and some metal cutting tools like a grinder, oh and a big hammer........comes in handy :)
The measurements of the steel used for the build of this folder are as follows;
Stationary Bed - 100 x 75 x 8 mm Angle
Bending Bar - 50 x 50 x 5 mm Angle
Clamping Bar 2 pieces of 40 x 40 x 5mm Angle
The bed length for bending is 800mm
Threaded Rod is M16
The thickness of steel I bent in my trials was 1mm sheet and 3mm Flat bar (25 w x 3mm). Did the job with ease.
I mad some mistakes in this build and I showed those and what I did to correct them. This folder will probably feature in up coming video's
If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments below. Thanks for watching. - Jak na to + styl
Kudos from the USA. Thank you so much for showing your entire process, "warts and all" as we say. Your design, in the end, is simple and effective. You inspire as well as instruct. Cheers!
My pleasure! Thank you!
Thank you for posting a video that shows how something did not work and why it didn't work. I've welded before but would be brave to say I'm any more experienced than a novice. Thank you for the lesson and I'm glad you still completed the project. Your content is great. Thank you again.
my pleasure Daniel and I really appreciate your comment - cheers!

Scott, you seriously inspire.
You are Great :-)

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your never ending support - thank you my friend!

First of all thanks I meant well by what I said. I like what yor saying keep away people who mock yor work it's so true.so keep up the good work man.
Great video Scott. Got to appreciate a man who puts up his own mistakes when he could have easily edited them out. It will definitely be my own go to reference when I have time to make one. Thanks for the upload.
My pleasure John, thank you for the feedback!
A mistake is not a failure, it just shows you need to find a better way to do it.
Finally, someone that understands the difference between video and audio. Great videos, I am a fan.
Thanks James! It's all one big amateur experiment and I just keep plodding away.
this planet needs more considerate people like you I have the most inconsiderate Neighbors in the world playing their music loud at different times of the night sometimes most of the time through the wee hours of the night and they let their handicap older child roam the streets make peacock sounds well anyways this is a great video your voice and work is very soothing to my eyes and ears but unfortunately this is not what I'm looking for but I will continue to watch thank you
Thank you - I too have some young partying neighbours. Makes it tough at times. All the best.
Nice job Scott. l like the ‘trial and error’ aspect to this video. Every project I’ve ever done has involved troubleshooting and redo’s. Great job.
Thanks Gregory. You are so right, we all stuff things up from time to time, even on the simple jobs :)
Thanks Scott. Many commenters have thanked you for “not editing out your mistakes”. I suspect they don’t really mean it that way as I don’t see them as mistakes. I see it as you are showing us the entire discovery process. That you have to do something to find out that maybe it doesn’t work. And you file that away and become stronger. It’s like any muscle, you have to tear the fibers to make ‘em grow. 😊. Thank YOU for sharing the whole journey.
Thank heaps Joel! You put it very well. It is a discovery process and that's what keeps it interesting for me, and mistakes are the best things to learn from, well for me that's true :) Thanks again for the feed back and all the best!
Thanks for sharing Scott. Seeing the over engineering side of things, the little mistakes along the way, certainly helps for future builders to try to reduce those challenges. Keep up the awesome videos!!
Thanks Mr Grizzly. I have just finish some upgrades to the folder. Video of those as soon as I'm done with the video edit.
@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious that's awesome, I'll keep an eye out for it!
Excellent build of the metal folder, and video. Thank you for sharing 👍👍👍👍👍
Out of all the diy brake vids you are the only one smart enough to cut all your pieces first and have it open enough to bend the last side! 👍
Thank you! Yes I wanted to be able to do that. Making a true pan brake takes a lot. For the work I do this works pretty darn good without being perfect. My mods improved this quite a bit.
Scotty mate, thank you for showing the stuff up. I usually make mistakes like that and kick myself for being so silly. I appreciate that you left it, as more is learnt from mistakes, I find. Great simple build, and very good tip with the ply spacer for the box fold. When i was watching I said "GENIUS" really loudly and the wife wanted to see why. She wasn't as impressed as me, but she doesn't understand! keep it up mate. cheers.
That's funny :) thanks heaps oohsam!
same here haha
I always like to hear the Australian lingo. "I'm such a goose." Priceless!
Nice work on this. I am going to make one of these so I an make my own steel cabinets with shelves.
Thanks Dave. I'm also a Drongo from time to time. Regarding the folder, I made a follow up video where I made some improvements to the basic design. It is much better now. Cheers.
Bending leaf should match the base or reinforce behind to equalized themselves working against each other when braking a pc. of metal hold down edge should flush to base reinforce w/angle iron 5 or 6 mm heavier metal for all for thicker capacity of brake with no twist or distortion of leaf and hold down straight bends like your spring return
Scott, Both sides of Production here are TOP DOGS ! The video is a dream to watch ...swift but it's like i'm there in the shed . Then noting the imperfections and improvements ... Ace !
Great comment Ben - thank you!!
Nice little project, great video. Looks so simple, and yet even an expert fluffs it ! Makes me feel relieved cause some how I always manage to bugger things up and it's nice to know it isn't just me and the professionals screw it up as well 🙂
Some nice little design features
built into this folder, great job.
Thanks for sharing. 😀😀😀😎😎😎
Thank you Tony! Yes it works pretty good for my needs.
i like the box trick at the end. I never thought of that! But now its in my tool box in the back of my mind. If I can find it when I need it..
Very nice brake. I really like that tip for folding up the other two sides on that pan. Clever indeed!
Thanks Dave! Sometimes the simplest of ideas work the best.
Good build. Very glad you showed the mistake of using too thin of metal and the subsequent warping with welding. I have to build one soon for a couple of projects. Thanks for sharing.
Much appreciated, thank you!
I can totally appreciate the time spent building this, I ended up just buying a small bender for a project, in hindsight I should have built one. Cool project Scott
I fluffed about for ages before the build thinking about making a DIY Pan Brake, which is far more complex, then I thought for the stuff I plan to do why bother. This critter works good enough for me and really its a pretty simple build and it makes a box :) Thanks Doug!
it's good you show all the pitfalls and traps, all the little things that can go wrong. It therefore helps us to prevent it. (maybe, lol) thanks for the video.
My pleasure, thank you!
Great job explaining and neat solution to box/drawer making. I will modify my folder to do as you have. Oh, and don't beat yourself up when you do something wrong. The people who don't make mistakes are the people that don't make anything.Cheers, Rob.
Thanks Robert! Yes, well said!
Great work mate. I always pick something up from your vids. Really enjoy how you work through the process of the build including hiccups!
Thanks as always Peter! Yes some times I need to keep it simple.
Brilliant video, I’m in the process of making my own metal brake. Yours is one of my go-to videos. Love your setup, am very jealous! Keep up the great projects 👍🏼
Oh! Thank you - all the best!
Great build. I've planned on making one of these for years. Thanks for the tips.
Ho worries John, thank you!
Love the block for the pan! Ingenious!
Thanks Jeremy, just have to remember to keep you bolts long enough to accept a block.
Honesty these days is much the same as common sense....... It's a super power, and not found in many. Well done again mate.
Thank you Paul - appreciated.
Really cool Scott. I like the modification for making a box. Gotta get those cutters!
Hey Paul, yes those cutters are seriously good. It's funny, I had all these complicated ideas to set it up for box making, but in the end I just thought why make it hard. So out came the trusty plywood. Thanks again Paul!
It's unique to show own mistakes on youtube! It's great! Thanks for the video!
My pleasure and. thank you Dawid
Great build Scott! Those "rotary cutters" are what I'm used to calling spotweld cutters. Simply because I bought a set of "spotweld" cutters and rotary cutters are what I got. LOL!
Thanks Robert! I don't mind what they call them, they are Flam'n awesome ;)
I've heard them called Blair cutter.
Very great Idea....I'm loving it...just want to built soon 👍
Awesome - thank you!
Thank you, a great tool to have in the shed. I have most of that here already just need to convince the missus I need a welder!
Dear Mrs Carlyon (Sorry I don't know your name), with a welder, Dan will be able to make you things, showing even more how much he loves you. Hope that helps Dan, caution she may make you unsubscribe also ;) Oh and Dan, you might have to come good on that promise I made on you behalf dude.
Just tell her a welder would keep your mind off sex and she will rush out and buy u one and a grinder and drill combo set works a treat
Nice one Scott. Love those rotacut bits. Must get some. Keep em' coming mate.
Thanks, those cutters are soon good.
Wow I,ve enjoyed your Channel since I found it. Thanks for posting I’m loving it!
My pleasure thanks for watching!
Very cool. I especially like the box brake trick at the end
Thanks again Kameron! Does the trick!
Good job. I was worried at first with the flex in the thinner angle. You obviously fixed that with heavier angle and the finish was great. Thanks
Thanks Geoff! I did a heap of structural improvements to this in another video. Much better now.
Muy buena y sencilla idea.Me voy a fabricar una igual para mi taller.Saludos desde Argentina amigo.
Thanks for sharing. I really appreciated also the part about the mistake, it is not common seeing people showing/commenting their own mistakes. Thank you and I will use it as a reference to build my own one
Thanks for your feedback! Making mistakes is part of the learning process, and we are all learners, well most of us I suppose.
Nice! It's on my "must build" list! Thank you.
Good stuff Jim, Thanks!
Great build, very helpful accessory to the workshop.
Thanks Rendel. It's come in pretty handy. I have done some mods to it, made a video on those. I'd say it's better now.
Excellent tip on the box bending, first brake I made was fine, 2nd with larger width, I hit the same issue as you with the flexing, the bends are not crisp 90°, but I decided that is useful for some projects, so I left it and now pretend I meant to make it like that.
I was going to use "Bristol " locking levers to clamp down but never bothered, but might be worth looking at for any blokes out there thinking of making a sheet bender.
:) but you gave it a go and still find the tool useful. Thanks Jaques!
Nice one Scott. A little folder is an awesome addition to a workshop. Don't lose it in a corner behind the offcuts like I did, took me 2 hours to find it last time!!
I've lost it already! Thanks Barry!
wow more cool stuff Scott! thanks was thinking of making a bender you gave me some good ideas thank you.
Thanks Bigrockets! I have a video on the upgrades which are worth looking into I think.
Very good brill and the box tray with the wood is a great idea 👍👍👍👍
Thank James! Simple and did the trick!
made my own just last week and it was the envy of the workshop lol.
Great to hear!
Excellent work, thanks again for making this video mate.
My pleasure and thanks for watching Andre!
Well done Scott... I've been planning one of these for a while now, you've given me some good ideas and inspiration... I may just attempt one soon...
Do it :) thanks!
Around 8 minutes I got notification I have 1 gig data left. So that's it for watching more videos until I top up.
Great video. Thanks for the upload.
:) Thanks Ronald, hope you have your. top up soon.
Hola , muchas gracias por compartir y mostrar tus conocimientos y habilidades , Dios te bendiga , saludos desde Chihuahua , Chih , México.
Gracias por tu bonito comentario. Dios te bendiga también!
Great Scott project, my congratulations, it will be very useful to me.
Thanks Mario, I'm really glad!
Thanks for sharing the project build out.
My pleasure!
Very cool Scott. I liked that you added your "failures"
I look back and see how stubborn I get, trying to make a bad idea work. Usually after overnight, I'll come to my senses. Thanks Hugo!
its all about the vid not the bender the bender is the reason to make the vid lol
Nice job mate, I wouldn't paint where the job will make contact with the bender, the paint will chip off over time when bending heavy gauge, then when you bend light gauge it will leave marks on the job where it sits on the edge of the paint. Either chemical blacken these parts or give a coat of lanolin grease and wipe off, either way will prevent rust.
At an old job we also had a bender with a half inch round bar to bend around, it made beautiful radius bends that might be more suited to the decorative work you do, rather then the sharpish corners. You know how to build it now, so it won't take long to make a second one, you will love the bends it will make.
Keep up the good work mate.
Thanks for the tips; yes the paint will chip off I suppose. Building something is like swallowing a spider to catch the fly, always leads to another project, or a better idea. All the best!
Awesome build Scott, well done!
Thank you Larry!
thank you ,finally i found the cutters on amazon usa bye you are super nice ;i do not bother you anymore
Glad you found them, and I'm glad I could be of some help.
Great work hope to use this to build my own in the next week or two!!
Cool! I will be modifying mine soon with wind in/ out ability for the clamping bar. Also I removed the paint from all contact faces but other than that it works a treat and it's simple. Thank you!
Cracking but of kit! Well done and I think I’ve just added that to my build list!
Thanks Tom, the folder is working well but I should not have painted the bending faces (another lesson learned).
Scott Turner ah the curse of paint 😬 im putting some kit together at the moment that I’ve had to re-make in stainless because it killed the paint.
Nice honest video mate with a great end result
Had a laugh at the noisy guy next door
That's me
Thanks mate - ya noisy bugger :)
Great, mate.
You only think you're such a goose... you should see me, got you beat hands down. :)
I've been looking everywhere and yours is the only one I've found that mentions compensating for different thicknesses of material - a thing that I've been thinking about in the designing of my own. Thanks for that.
I've got competition! Cool! I just need to make a threaded adjusting rod. That will improve it. Thanks for the feedback!
Well done.. I like a video that show the pitfalls with the wins. I've wanted to build a small folder...I'll just downsize yours..thanks.🇦🇺👍🏻
No worries! Thank you Michael!
Awesome job Scott. I need to throw one of these together for my shop.
Thanks Jack. I've been bending sheet over sides of benches, in vices etc for years so I though it was well and truly time I made one.
+Scott Turner I have done the same thing. Like you I also worked in the aviation industry for a long time. It's hard going for all the high dollar fancy stuff at work. Then come home to use makeshift or what ever you can find to bench stuff.
Great idea on how to make it a pan brake! I have been trying to figure that out for a while now.
Thanks, yes it was a simple solution and it works!
Finally a great channel with metric system, yay
Thanks Nikola! Yes metric all the way!
Super nice job!
Great design!
Thank you!
I love the video for this build. I really need to weld up a folder with my powerimig.
Yes do it, and thanks heaps!
👍🇦🇺 liked your honesty and feedback we all learn by our screwups
We sure do- Thanks John!
Nice, I was gonna build one of those too soon. I'm with you on the bandsaw, friction cutting just seems nastier the less you have to do it.
Yep! Initially I bought the cheaper, but readily available blades and I was going through them fast. About a year ago I bought a quality blade which cuts faster and I'm still on my first one. Love the band saw (with a good blade).
Great Video Scott. Very nice work
Thank you!

Brilliant work as always Scott might even have a go myself 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Nicely done, my friend.
Thank you Timbo Timbo!
Job well done, thats a really nice folder
Thanks Rod. It comes in handy for my projects.
Ótimo trabalho, perfeito, parabéns Scott 👏👏👏👏
Thank you Fernando!
Heavy duty, great build, great video.
Thanks David!
Thanks for sharing the mistakes too! great video!
I have one and I was wondering how to make 4 side bend.i really appreciate the help you put out there 👌
No problems! Thanks
Good work Thank you for your beautiful information👏👍👍
My pleasure, thanks for your comment!
excellent job scott
Thank you! Just as a side note, I plan to remove the paint from the contact faces. That was another stuff up :)
Wish I had one last week , thanks Scott I well have one next time . hope its as good as yours .
They come in handy!
Hey mate, love your videos. I appreciate you putting up your misjudgement in material choice... gives us hacks hope that it’s ok when we get it wrong 🙂
Thanks Daz! I'm just a hack with a camera and too much time on my hands :)
Fantastic to point out the mistakes.
Too many to list all of them :)
Thanks Thomas!
Good folder. Well done mate
Thanks 👍
Nice stuff 👍
Really love your work. I want to start my own youtube, a jib a week kind if thing, similar yo what your doing. But i lack the confidence to film myself working.... thanks for the inspiration....
Yes do it! You'll build your confidence along the way but you have to make a start before you "think" you are ready. You are already making stuff!
Very good it save a lot of money and time thank you I make one at home and really work for my project
Nice spacer idea at the end.
Cheers Chad. Simple but it worked fine.
Thanks for more great ideas Scott 👍
No worries!
Hi Scott, I think I’m gonna put my hand to building one of these shortly, I have a heavy welding table that I’m gonna attach it to which is 1m in width,
I’d like to build it to fit a 1220 sheet and add in a supporting truss on top, but I’m not to sure if it is a good idea to go this big as I’m not to sure if I’ll have the strength to bend a sheet this big,🤔
From your experience with your one do you think goin for 1220 is too much.?
👍
Richutube2000 check out Phil Vandaley build (I think it's Phil's video). He made one about that size but it will definately need struts to stiffen . Thickness of material that you want to bend is another factor.
Will do Scott thanks, 👌
It's a shame the thinner material wasn't up to it, well done for not editing out your mistakes.
Thank you Tim, yep I fluffed that one :)
I used box steel for bend bar,,, works very well, and you can get flat square edge angle iron instead of useing round edge,, and you can have your bending edge milled in sharp angle for crisp bends.
Thanks George, Yes a milled sharp edge would be much better. So far it's been a pretty handy tool for my workshop.
Love your work sir!
Much appreciated Alfie!
What machine would you recommend for small boxes 200 mm x 72 mm x 25 tapering to to mm
Great video many thanks
Well done. Building one of these is on my list of projects, thanks for some great ideas. If you don’t mind I’ll even learn from some of your mistakes LOL!
Thanks, well I'm glad if I can help someone not making the same boo boo's. Cheers Tom.
Awesome video..inspired me to build one especially when I've been looking to buy and seems like all the affordable one get bad reviews..thanks
Thanks. Yes make one. Initially I was overthinking the build but this one was pretty simple and really it will do quite a lot of jobs most of us need.
Great set up of tools..... Very jealous..... Great workmanship also. A lot of CZcams content creators just throw stuff together and totally disregard safety, forgetting young teens watch and emulate what CZcamsrs do...... So top job all round mate 👌👌👌👌👌
Very much appreciate your comment Adrian. I have some that mark me down on that regard as most times I don't wear gloves for general work, except when using chemicals. I'm not perfect but I do my best to get the safety glasses and muffs on. Welding I cover up otherwise UV burns my fair skin. Also I need to get a respirator for some jobs. Cheers!
@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious don't worry about the haters mate. I'm a boilermaker so i really like to see when good marking out and measuring as im ocd as hell about that..... I've got a 3/4 built pan break, i just need to find the time to finish it off, but since moving and ending up in a tiny workshop I've lost all drive. I was going to do a job a week or 2weeks if it was a bigger project. But like i say, ivd lost motivation.... I do a fair bit of blacksmithing also......
Cheers Adrian, you'll push through it and get it done the you are ready. I have a second video on the bender that shows some mods that improve this style of bender. It's worth a peek. I've bought a diy forge kit, so I just need the chance to put it together. Need to try some smithing!
Thanks. Neat job!
Great video i have the same metal band saw as you but much older 1983 with coolant pump this is my first video keep up the great work Anthony (metal cutting band saw with coolant pump) on youtube
Hi Anthony, I'd love to retrofit a coolant pump to my saw! Thank you for the comment!
Two parallel sides are of course easy to bend ... But how easy it is to get out of position by taking an ordinary piece of plywood. It is a pity that at one time I did not know how to do it ... All ingenious is simple! Thanks for the idea!
Thank you! Yes simple is best. Initially I was thinking of complex modifications to make a box, then I thought of the wood, tried it and it worked.
brilliant and very helpful..
Thanks Samuel, great to hear!
Great job buddy
Cheers!
That's great and not overly complicated. And you had it sitting on a superjaws
Yes the Super Jaws come in handy. I'm always using it. Thanks Bernie!
I wouldn't be without mine
