    I can not agree more with the man's assertion that SSBNs are the most important component of the Nuclear Triad (bombers, hardened missile silos & SSBNs)! I dare say that the other 2 are kept in operation purely to increase the amount of targets an aggressor state would have to neutralize. If we kept only the subs, then all resources of the enemy could be used towards attacking the subs, command and control, and population centers. Now just because I say the SSBNs are the most important part of the Nuclear Triad does not diminish the strategic importance of Attack Subs (Hunter/Killers). Quite the opposite, as the capability of a single SSBN illustrates just how important the mission of the Attack Sub's commander is in locating, relaying the position of, and if ordered, neutralizing an enemy Ballistic sub.

    • @Luvurenemy
      @Luvurenemy Před 5 lety +3

      Pete Rhein Great point. An enemy could devote all peacetime defense resources to wiping out SSBNs. Then on first day of battle, the nuclear counter strike by planes and missiles isn’t there.

    • @pavel9652
      @pavel9652 Před 3 lety

      @Drew Peacock I think you are right, there would be no time for planning a retaliatory strike assuming the other side has already launched their missiles. Subs probably practice launch regularly. Not only targets but the scenarios are also predetermined. I think there are send orders what captain should do when the entire country is destroyed, for example, join the allied forces.

    • @MillionFoul
      @MillionFoul Před 5 lety +3

      The best way to practice keeping up with enemy subs and sneaking past surface ships is to do so. Even at times when the US and USSR were having good relations, submarine operations deep within Soviet territorial waters never stopped, and we still haven't stopped trailing every Russian SSBN we can. I wouldn't doubt we trail friendly submarines if we can get away with it, and they do (or attempt to do) the same.

      Most advanced submarine in the world will be launched in 2025 if it sticks to the plan.

      Next best submarine will be the Ram and Walrus making babies.

      Now the fact I stated will stand to the Burden of Proof and people can easily fact check this.
      My class has not been detected by any navy for over 70 years. Not ever. ;-) Simple.
      The Virgina class has been detected again and again and again. Very easy to detect.
      You a armchair admiral maybe? Exercises mean nothing? Then what are they for? lol!
      Oh beside never being detected over 7+ decades? We have a 100% hit ratio against CSGs and CBGs and even bigger fleets then that. We have never missed. You could try 2 CBGs ofcourse. We'd still win remember?
      Yes US 'exercises' are scripted so they always win. NATO exercises ofcourse the gloves come off. Full capabilities are used and everything goes. Sonar is pretty WWII really. Most modern subs have moved way beyond that these days.
      Tell the USN to field all 3 operational carriers next time? We can sink them all.

    not only are they the deadliest weapons delivery platforms, they're also the US guarentee for a retaliatory strike even if our air force bomber bases and ICBMs have all been destroyed. and we have 14 of them still, so if you take the number of SLBMs on each submarine (24) and each missile carries 10 warheads (totalling 240 warheads per submarine) that works out to about 3360 warheads. and keep in mind each warhead has a yield of 350 kilotons each. all of that firepower + the ability to remain hidden and hard to find, yeah you have a lethal deterrent

      The Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN) is classified by the United States Navy and just about every other formidable nation in the world as a weapons platform. A weapons system is something like Aegis, or the targeting and firing systems and computers used to launch the actual missile. Doing a simple google search of the definition of a weapons platform would have proved you wrong before you even bothered commenting and saved you from looking like the dumb ass who can't even do the slightest amount of research before stating their opinion and assuming it's factual. Quit being that dumb ass, Bob.
