  • In preparation for our home addition I've been doing a lot of little DIY projects In other words another project that ended up taking a lot longer than expected. Last month was the under the stair storage along with the second bathroom makeover.
This week I'm taking down the ugly wooden railing in the kitchen and making a sweet metal railing which is mostly 3/4" square tubing. Yes another welding video to all those that here to see some metal burn! This project isn't to intensive other than time. It is important to get all your angels just right. As you can imagine the spacing if off then it will stick out like a sore thumb. Another tip, for the amount of steel that you'll be using it is well worth going to a steel yard or steel supplier. Home Depot and Lowes do have the material but they are a lot more expensive than a local supplier. Once there ask them where their surplus section is. My local supplier always have these basic shapes in their surplus section. This being a demo type project you'll need your typical hammer, drill and level. I did use some specialty tools that aren't totally required. For example the nail gun (simple wood screws would do just fine if not better and a drywall cutout tool was nice but your drywall knife will work as well. Lets not forget about all the metal working tools.

Another weekend and another railing! Thanks for watching, be safe and healthy. Leave a comment of which projects I should do next when we are all quarantined!

The quality of this video is superior to your previous ones, not that they were bad or anything. The editing effort that went into this is very apparent. You've bumped up your overall video quality several notches. Very well done! Oh, and the railing is very cool, too.

@@-DIYPRO- You're welcome. Thanks for your videos on the harbor freight welders. They really helped me out when I bought one last summer!

Very nice, and very tedious. My business gets these all the time. But it's all about pushing boundaries of design. 🔥

Wow, that looks really cool. How long have you been welding. Could someone just pick up a welder and do a project like this?

    • @-DIYPRO-
      @-DIYPRO-  Před 3 lety +2

Welding does take practice but the good thing about it is if the welds look bad you can grind them down and do it again.

Great work, any idea how many linear feet of 3/4 tubing you used? Steel is so pricey now, would be great to do this manually.

Great video, question about your welding of the 3/4 square tubing: Are you welding all four sides or just the outside connection points?

I'd say it took 40 hours, I don't really know i'm just throwing that out there. It did extend a couple weekends.

      @-DIYPRO-  Před 2 lety +1

If you are new to welding I'd pick up a cheap flux core welder and start practicing. Since this isn't structural your welds don't have to be perfect and if they look bad you can grind it down and reweld it. Check out some of my older videos I talk more about welders. Do you have a Harbor Freight store in CA? They have the perfect home hobby type welders for beginners.

Got to love those UT mountains. I get if from Wasatch Steel on 33rd South. You can go in and get new stock or ask where their surplus is (outside on the east side) go look through that. Most of the surplus has a little rust on it but the little clean up it takes is worth the cheaper price....for me at least.

How do you get the correct angles for the 3/4” rails? Thanks

    • @-DIYPRO-
      @-DIYPRO-  Před 3 lety +2

Easy, eye ball it and cut twice! Seriously though that is how I did the first one and like the angle so I kept the saw set up for that angle until i was done.
