  • It's March 1992 and i'm standing on a hill side, in a housing estate car park. From my vantage point you have a good view of Toton Yard. Back in 1992 there was still plenty of coal traffic and MGR trains. We see classes 08 56, 58 & 60 (including 56 026 still in BR blue) on MGR workings along with a class 31 on an engineers train and an 08 busy shunting the yard. Awesome sir! A place i still frequent in my mind often, 2 years earlier than '92! Some big loco's in this vid, 58019 'Shirebrook Colliery', 58016 which still survives and the mighty 56026 in her last months of traffic, photted her at York '87, with the grey replacement roof panel, looks like the orange cantrail strips have nearly worn off! Nice upload :D

    That is certainly different to how it is today. Even 45015 has been scrapped!

    Great place - I got to go once(without camera) when my ex was a Facilties Manager there. Thanks for sharing (another) interesting film.

    Think I stood on that same hill myself as a youth, back in the late 70s/early 80s... :-)

    I see the 60 scrapline is a 20s scrapline. Are they peaks at the start or 37?

    I do think that most of them have gone and scrapped and others that are still around.

    MGR = ???

      MGR = Merry Go Round coal trains that went from colliery to power station without stopping. They were loaded on the move at around 2 mph and emptied at the other end the same way.....
