  • A BR vid now, this time showing some Trainload Freight action around Sandiacre, looking at the traffic at Toton Depot back in March 1992. A big Trainload Coal sector depot and yard back in the day, when coal traffic was king with plenty of workings to be seen. Classes at work are 08, 37, 56 & 58 with views of the withdrawn class 20s in the depot yard. See locos in BR blue, Railfreight and Trainload Freight liveries. I know. I still consider them and the class 60"s as new locomotives. It's a shame seeing the class 60's in place of the 20's in this video.

Toton was always my favourite depot to visit in the 70s when it was possible to see 100 locos on a weekend.Liked the shot of the 56 doing an impression of a kettle.

I imagine the Grid had been idling for a while. I used to do depot visits in the early 1980s with the Railway Enthusiast Society Ltd, here and Tinsley were both great for a weekemd visit, locos everywhere!

More smoke out of that diesel than a steam engine! Properly wouldnt pass emission tests today. I enjoy these videos.

That's what all locos that i used to drive were like, if they had sat around idling for any length of time. It would soon clear through though once you got going......

@@tonyjones9442 There is a co-ordination & reaction test to pass on the drivers aptitude test. It is hard to pass and tends to fail 8 out of 10, and that's it no matter how well you may have done on the rest of the tests. I took my trainers off and did it with just my socks on (there are foot-peddles involved) and passed first time! Started on NSE on EMUs with Trainmens duties on ballast's at weekends until i got my permenant drivers job on Trainload Freight, and then it was all diesel loco work with the odd steam loco pilot job.....not bad, getting paid tp play trains.......

I remember visiting Toton depot once. Loads of locos, but I think the most exciting thing was seeing 08666, the shunter of the beast. That line of Class 20s looked very sad, but an interesting view of the car park. There was a Lancia Delta, I think, though probably not an Integrale. I doubt BR wages would run to covering the insurance for that. That I think was the most epic class 56 clag ever; even BR, with its relaxed attitude to emissions, would surely consider that that needed to be looked at.

Yes, the cars are all classics now! I think the Grid had been idling for a while before pulling away, they tended to blow through when they got going.....

That Peak in the background must have been there a few years, they were all withdrawn by 1987 weren't they. And that 58 near the end had its engine compartment doors put back on not in the correct order, making a sort of jigsaw puzzle out of the Railfreight Coal logo.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus

The peak was there for years until removed, for preservation i believe although i don't know if it was restored. The 58 was probably part way through repairs?....

I should imagine for shunting purposes perhaps on a freight only branch and/or the working goes along a freight only branch with level crossings that are opened & closed by the train crew. The loco crew opens them to pass, the guard will then close them once over it.
