This sounds like a song that wants to exist so badly but doesn't know how to
But then, at the halfway point, it starts to get more of a rhythm because it steadily gains more confidence in itself; at 2:08 is where the song really starts to get a hang of things. I think this is a lesson on the process of making art; sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error before you get a flow.
more like this sounds want to say something but don't know how to, but then in 2:08, yes he explains everything beautifully.
@@bananajoestar omg i'm exactly feeling this
it's just a shitty music bro stop hyping this guy
@@Anis-cz4ql 😂I didnt like it too at first but after listening to it for a while, I find it pretty peaceful.
This song is about when you don't know what should you do, so you press randomly and repeatly the music notes until you finally make a beautiful melody. The music notes are the choices you have in your life and when you finally find the purpose of your life, you can make a beautiful and harmonious melody with those choices.
this means so much more now thank you
If you like how this sounds check out the artist Go-Qualia. Pretty similar in a lot of ways
That's nice. Thanks for this.
Porter share his feeling with us...
I cried.
It seems everything Porter throws at us, we will somehow eventually like it. Somehow this song collect a strong vibes arround it. It's sounds weird tbh, and bad at the first try. But after the second try, it's soothing.
My ears being going: ➡️⬅️⬆️↗️↘️↘️↙️↗️↔️💙😩💘
More like,your earphone/headphone
that’s felt really good
Makes you feel in the center of attention
XDDDD
But it's fine 🥴
this song, and wind tempos are by far the most unique tracks on this album
🔥
And both of them are my favourite :D
prove it.
@@namshimaru other tracks sound similar (but still unique!) from each other, having sort of like a style to them. However wind tempos and this have a more distinguished feel to them, with this track being arguably more hectic than others on the album.
@@appulman That's just your opinion. I asked for proof and you have provided none. Try again.
This song feels like the entire creative process from start to end in one song. Starts with a cool sounding little riff literally going in circles through your head, starts to build a more solid center, gets built upon and layered, something that feels alive starts to take form, it blossoms, gently drifts away.
Alternately, I also feel like it sounds like the battle to overcome a creative block... Where the desire to create comes and goes, thrashing about inside of your mind, begging for an escape, all while your brain tries to make sense of what you're trying to create while finding the desire for it. Eventually, inspiration strikes, and the pieces finally come together, and you're finally free from a mental prison.
@@thehumandirigible4882 I can definitely imagine that
The intro's left/right switching immediately caught my attention.
I have a soft spot for songs like that, i love those... like glitch mob's we can make the world stop was one of my faves for that reason too... damn this is a vibe asf
I think your headphones are on backwards. It goes right to left.
:)
@@ftwgunnerpwns You must've loved Wind Tempos xD
Wait thats the intro i thought my AirPods broke
@@lightningwingdragon973 You are correct. I listened to it again once I was sure that I was fully awake.
my first new album in 7 years, “nurture” is out now: porter.fm/nurture
damn only a few likes on this comment aswell? why are people not listening to these masterpieces today
@@dylant_125 maybe they haven’t understand this song yet?
I'm so glad I found this. Exactly the type of musical inspiration I was searching out.
Another timless album by Porter gotta love it.
the album already 2 months old??? time flies really fast tho :(
Idk why but this song remembers me "Fellow Feeling" from Worlds. You know, the glitchy, distortion, experimental at the begining and the melodical at the end. Porter is art.
Thats was my first catch for sure.
I immediately thought of that since its my favorite song of all time by him. Glad I wasnt the only one😁😁
Feels like Shelter x Fellow Feeling x Mirror for me
I feel you man
One of the most interesting things about this song that I just noticed - among many things - is that it’s continuously going from right to left if you’re wearing headphones, like when you’re looking out the window of a car and seeing trees pass by. The spatial audio is crazy here.
cant explain it but this track especially makes me feel like i've grown up with porter's music over the years
Me too 😊
Maybe it's because it's representing all the creative experimentation he's done over the years, encompassing all of his works. I definitely hear Worlds and Virtual self quite strongly in this one. Also a bit of Language with the piano.
Last time felt this way listening to Fellow feeling from worlds
That feeling really hits me with Look at the Sky
the song starts off confused and not knowing where its headed, and the more it plays, it starts to figure itself out!! just like us as humans...
I wonder why people feel this. To me, it has a clear direction. Maybe I am used to songs like this? Check out Ezra by Oneohtrix Point Never. It has the same vibes
I believe it's meant to represent Porter himself and his struggle in finding out who he's meant to be, and the artist he's meant to be. The entire album is about his rise, then his fade then his acceptance for just making music and no longer trying to impress everyone. He realizes now that he can't make everyone happy, so he'll just make the best music that he feels he can
Porter himself said that during 2015 , 2016 and 2017 he was unable to make music, he couldn't create something new and was depressed as fuck. Probably this song is relating to that phase of his life. I am happy that he is doing well now.
Honestly my favorite song on the album. Given that our only imagery is the title "dullscythe", this can be the swan song of a retired wheat farmer or a reaper, still trying to find his rhythm with his broken tool. It's clearly an experimental and broken song, but still clearly has life. It's mysterious and I love it.
Interesting take.
you are very perceptive
Reminds me of a lot of the songs off “R+7” by OneohtrixPointNever
I also believe part of the titling is about taking time to sharpen your skills like a scythe. The time is not spent using it while it is dull, but instead making it more effective as a long-term benefit for your well-being and your craft.
@@luknepo wow amazing that makes so much sense too this works on so many levels porter really is a genius
This is how I imagined Porter and flume collab would sound like. Lit af
Damn, I'm not the only one, the first half of this song immediately remind me of Flume.
Same. I was thinking yessss Porter found the granulizer 😅
OMG IT DOES It. I just love
Aphex Twin x Flume x Porter
Heellll yes!
dullscythe is really my most fav track on nurture. unfortunately it is also most underrated track on nurture.
i need an entire album of porter experimental/ambient/glitch tracks
Me too, I loved fellow feeling
Same. I need more of this stuff from Porter, i really like it
You should check out Nascent by Alexander Panos, the closest album to this style i know
"dullscythe" a scythe that is dull. Must be reflecting trying to cultivate something, but it being incredibly hard to. sick.
No phrase I could write would do justice to how the transition in the song made me feel. It gives me shivers and brings tears to my eyes, there's something transcendant about how it conveys the message of turning chaos into orderly beauty.
Exactly
The very first music ( I've heard of ) that represents a sense of "Art Block"
the first half of the music represent your mind filling with Gibberish Thoughts, you can't make up something because You're either confused, lack of Inspiration, unable to think, your mind just automatically filling itself with random thoughts because by doing so your mind is trying to find what possible thoughts that you're going to use, like for example, you wanna draw but you just couldn't so you try to think of something, drawing these or those but you can't make it up very clearly because your mind is just a Gibberish void as for the moment, it's very random and you had a hard time to think of these specific drawing you wanna draw and this can last for a day or a week or a month depend on yourself...
The other half of this music represent someone who finally found an inspiration or/and motivation to draw, they no longer feel like their mind is randomised but instead they have see what they are going to do and what kind of drawing they are going to draw...
I'm not just saying this to Artist, this can happen to everyone, be like Composer, Game Dev, Musicians, name all you can... We all had this "Art Block" moment but we do have to remind ourselves that these moments are Temporary, not Permanent, so be patient and don't overthink yourself, let the time manage your mind and when the time comes and you found yourself an inspiration to do it, then do it before you lost the grasp of the things you wanted hold on to...
I don't take the arts but I can relate. Wow well said
Neigbhor: ei yo! is your speaker busted or something?!
Me: Shhh! I'm listening to a masterpiece!
Its same happened to me then but its my brother
I'm literally having a headache trying to listen to this and I still like it
🫂
actually we would enjoy it much better with headphones rather than speakers. but still, it's a great song
when i saw its name on the tracklist, i knew dullscythe was going to be one of my favorites, but i didn't expect it to go this fkn hard.
How did you know just by name?
@@varden3270 liked the name lol
same!! the name its just too badass xd
The way this song starts with Porter testing different sounds and then it transitions into absolute joy wow
That last minute or so was so magical like WOW, He could literally just make a whole song just revolving around that melody
To appreciate this song, you have to understand the beauty in the chaos.
The end part is very beautiful, but I think the middle part is just great. You can tell porter really put effort in this track.
one of the most unique songs in the album
this track has resemblance to fellow feeling, and i love it
I also have that kind of feeling
Agreed
Same Feeling
It has a fellow feeling to fellow feeling
and "Natural Light"
looord the drum addition at 2:33 is nuts
It's like you can feel something being pulled out of you with this one.
For MUSICIANS out there. Have you ever felt sick of making music following a very standard pattern? That intro-verse-PChorus/BUp-Chorus/Drop and so on. That feeling when you rally want to jump out of mainstream-ness. Do whatever you want that only you knows the sense out of it. I've felt it, and this music gives me encouragement. this maybe not you, but im sure there is someone else.
Do the things you feel is right. In music, "rules are meant to be broken".
Idk why but when I envision a video for this song I keep envisioning someone dying with broken moments of their life flashing before their eyes slowly piecing together a memory that plays when the song is fully pieced together.
thåt is ä reeeëally bëautiful 🥺✨✨
Damn, youre one of us
i imagines the same honestly
While listening to this, it felt like my brain was creating its own song with the samples provided by Porter, i love it, i've never had this feeling while listening to a song before
This song shows everything will be fine in the end
I was doing fine until I read your comment. Starting tearing up!
@@HalfAsianJap is everything alright my friend?
@@manilabeat Yes, thank you for asking. Was an unexpected visceral response. Porter does this to me.
This comment made me tear up
I really hope so
*_Dullscythe_*
For me, the song was about the beauty found in trial and error. It's about failing over and over again, a loop of mishaps and desperately changing course trying to find the 'way' or force/make something work. The frustration in not being able to accomplish, achieve or perform. Similar to learning how to ride a bike or re-doing the same math problem 6 times or raging over why your lines of code won't work, stuck in an iterative loop just like the first half of the song. With each failure the yearning for success strengthens and accumulates all until, it just clicks., the 'way' reveals itself, everything just works out. This song does so well to embody this, there is wisdom and beauty in the mundane, a dull scythe to motivation.
Loved the entirety of the song, 9.4/10
Even a dull scythe can cut wheat if you throw yourself at the job enough. Yeah you just have to try over and over until you find yourself holding the golden wheat and have found yourself again
This is a genius theory, especially given what Porter has said about this album ☺️
You worded it the best
In music, rules are meant to be broken and I think the sporadic notes in the beginning are supposed to represent feeling lost. As the song progresses, there's more clarity because he's slowly found purpose, meaning, and happiness.
Correction: In *art,* rules are meant to be broken.
@@jenovahhelson5941I feel like that statement has been horribly twisted to represent a false reality. It is only once you know the rules and have mastered them, should you break them. "Rules are meant to be broken" is horrible advice to give an armature in any field, let alone art. Rules guide you into mastery, once you are a master you fully understand where, why and how to break the rules in order to bring your creation to the next level.
@@Naev0w0 Fuck, I forgot about that. Sorry, and thanks for the criticism.
Jump from mother to this one is a...unique feeling. I’m glad this album came out in these difficult times, it gives me calm
This is the most slept on track from the album by far
The build up leading to that just massive second half omg porter
The piano hit me hard
When I listen to this with closing eyes , it feels like somebody is running around me with speaker lol
Waking to a fking self healing tour😭😭😭. Tbh this be the best day of 2021 for me

Unreal track. Halfway through feels like a blooming flower towards the end. This part 2:54 gives me goosebump and sends chills down my spine...gorgeous piece of art
This sounds so cool definitely an original righ out of the porter book
Wow ok that was weirdly beautiful
How can Porter come up with this sound type? This really prove that porter is really unique :)
A plugin... and then cut to the beat?
@@imemex8001 "A plugin"
Honestly its lots of fun to record a peicethen chop it up.
sound type? this sounds like flume
@@abhyudayshahi1235 ikr, it sounds like flume. Can't imagine if porter & flume collab :D
this song has really grown on me, damn
This song is so indescribably beautiful in ways that transcend sound itself. It’s more than just a song in and of itself.
2:15 they are the most beautiful strings that I've ever heard in my life
I came to realize upon listening to this track again, that it's not so much of a song, more than it's an auditory representation of what it's like to have writer's block, and *desperately* wanting to overcome it.....but you're not sure how. So you get as random and as chaotic as you possibly can, in hopes that you will find and bathe in the same comforting light that you've come to know once again. Then near the end of the song the chaos is gone. In its place there's a soothing, tranquil melody. It's satisfying, and incredibly relieving. I think this symbolizes how the writer in question comes to the realization that positive self expression derived from imagination is in fact a beautiful thing, and as such it isn't something that should be forced upon yourself. If you get mad or frustrated with your own imagination, you're making the rain cloud overshadowing it even larger. Writer's block has been two words that I've been so deathly afraid of for a total of 5 years that the very sight and thought of them just made me more uneasy than I even realized it did. So once it occured to me what this was intended to represent, it resonated with me to my very core. I empathize and am so so sorry for anyone who's going through this pain. I hope that both this comment and this experience touches you & will heal you in some way :)
the name dullscythe makes me believe its something like this; people sometimes associate cutting grass with growing or moving on. the feeling of not being able to move forward, being stuck in a loop of chaotic thoughts. but eventually breaking through. thats what this song means to me. and i love it. It has become one of my favourite songs in the album. while it is one of the few with no actual lyrics, it has a deeper meaning for me than the others.
TLDR: scythes cut grass, and it being dull symbolizes the inability to move on.
Thanks for mentioning this interpretation
Prolly the track that explains Porter the most, melodic experimental
Easily the most breathtaking and beautiful of the songs from nurture. as someone who basically only listened to worlds in middle school (which I assume is a number of people lol) this is absolutely the direction I was hoping porter would go for and it reminds me a lot of like velocity design comfort or even like Alice gao it’s really an amazing sound. loved the album man, glad to hear you be personal and heartfelt in your music
0:00 When you play a new rhythm game for the first time
I wish this song was 10 minutes longer
Close your eyes
Take a deep breath
Feel the Song
Feel the rhythm.
Edit: Every time listen to this song it gets better and better, I felt like I can understand Porter now, he is explaining his journey.
Edit again: If you listen closely, start at 1:33 you can hear Virtual Self rhythm.
How's ur relationship with Kyouko? xD
It literally just glitchy sounds?
@@mentan2001 it's a journey.
@@Lumiereclips indeed
It’s gotten better everytime I’ve listened lol I’m thrilled
Dullscythe is when the scythe was dull and Porter channeled his energy here to sharpen it again and to trim the grass where he would dive in the Nurture album art.
Angst. Uncertainty. Ruminating thoughts. All peacefully come together at 2:09. Just a beautiful piece of music.
this is the creative process. messing around at first, and then later it just clicks
Flume vibes 💙🙆🏻♂️🙌🏻
Feels like Daft Punk's Motherboard's violent cousin, but in the best way possible. I love it.
I’ve like repeated the second half like 50 times by now, it’s sooooo beautiful
I think the name is really appropriate to my theory of this song. A dull scythe is a tool that has a purpose, but without being sharpened it can't cultivate what it needs to, and pulls at the wheat trying to grasp and cultivate it. This song is basically a song desperately trying to be put together. I think this could reflect the time of when Porter was over working himself and not letting himself go out and experience things, not knowing that experiencing things is what would sharpen his scythe.
Guess I'll throw in my interpretation too:
The scythe - a farming tool used to reap and gather crops - has grown dull from use. However, this collection of notes and tunes begin to come together and eventually make a piece. I'd say the scythe has sharpened up by the end of it. It took some grinding, but it cut through clearly.
I enjoy how this has the same feeling as a lot of classical music in the sense that you can feel a story in just the instruments. Love the hell out of this song lol
I haven't listened to this for weeks but this music appeared in my dreams! We listened to it in a Cinema and the sound was just bouncing here and there and going around, glad I had this experience even though it was all in my head.
Thank you for bringing us this emotion.
Listening to this make me feel like I'm time travel forward.. floating... seeing confusing then amazing things along the way..
My heart is pounding 😭
dullscythe and unfold are my fav track of the album
The whole song is mind blowing, definitely an incredible experience. The gentle piano melody ties everything together.
The feeling that you can't describe with words, the feeling that you can't feel anymore, something nostalgic.. this music is making me feel like those days when I was a child didn't know anything about the world and also not knowing how to put the feelings that you get into a word. But, every time you learn and memorize you get to know about the things that you couldn't describe. By listening to this music it felt really great and I can't describe the feeling I'm having now. That's how amazing this music is!
It made me bring back memories of childhood, of places where I lived and did not remember they were there, it generated a lot of nostalgia for the old days. I cried when I remembered such beautiful things. Thanks Porter! This album is pure art.
This is like musical ASMR :)
After listening to the non-single songs of nurture, this alongside Wind Tempos are my favourite, they're so unique, I love them
i love all the experimental stuff on this album
no in hell way "Until Next Time" take inspiration from this, because the first glitch part was recalling me to this song...
Toby nailed it so much, and i wish Porter would compose one song for Deltarune, i'll be screaming if he did so...
This isn't weird, crazy, or bad stuff.
This is Masterpiece stuff.
i just adore this... the chopped piano, the experimentation...
Hah, everywhere I look now, I find your music. How inspiring.
Can’t explain the feeling with words,
Just amazing! Love it
I am crying to this right now. It's so pretty!
This is my favorite song of the album. Glitch noises are my jam
Been with Porter since the release of Worlds. Thanks Porter for this giving everyone this great experience
I feel like the song goes through my head and it's amazing. ❤️❤️❤️
I swear I thought this song was going to make a sudden transition to Virtual Self at 1:34
Thats kinda the point of the song. It's starts off with his signature style of distortion and glitching from Worlds, then moves into small piece sounding like it's from Virtual Self and then moves into his new style in Nurture. Genius. It's a journey and it's beautiful
This is amazing! This is my favorite so far.
This feels like something transforming into an object of substance, beauty, and light...and it's trying to understand the world around it...I think I need to use this as a sleep album dude, then as it gets to the end it feels like a bike ride by the beach...
This is a beautifully crafted track here. Plus those drum breaks and homage to so much other influences was really fucking cool honestly.
Wow wow wow, wait, this is art, love it
every song of nurture is a masterpiece, seriously.
So after listening to this a couple dozen times, my favorite part is the last 14 seconds. Absolutely beautiful.
the rhythm game maps for this song are gonna be so siiiick
The eventual osu 8* techmap will be interesting
@@miutonata5052 agreed
This map will be super difficult to map because there's no stable tempo until the second half, so I'm not sure who will put in the effort to make a beatmap for this if only for the timing issues for the first half
This is unique, I'm digging it!
Ever since I first heard this song, I didn't quite understand what it was trying to convey but I listened to it because I loved how it unfolded and how strange it sounded.
But things happened in my life that made me listen to this song again... and I couldn't help but cry, it has a very incredible meaning for me.
Thanks for making this song Porter.
Beautiful song 💚
Thank you so much porter for this gift
This is one of my favorite songs from the album
The melodic break between all the percussion at 1:40 blows my mind
wow it’s so beautifully unique i love it
I cannot get enough of this song, It feels like he just walked me through life.
Right when the song goes from being distorted, to feeling like you are in an open field with the plants breathing beside you as the music seems to sigh up and down to simulate human breath, I found myself unable to dictate where the sounds were coming from. I was simply experiencing them, I could not make out a beat to tap my foot along with, I could not determine where the chords started, it was amazing to me. It genuinely brought me back to a place before I ever started my music career in 6th grade concert band. Truly incredible stuff, Porter. Thank you!
