People with Histrionic Personality Disorder love to be the center of attention. They get easily attached to others and find themselves proclaiming that a person is their “best friend” within a couple of days of knowing them. More women than men are diagnosed with this disorder. Histrionic Personality Disorder can be misdiagnosed as other mental illnesses such as Borderline Personality Disorder or Bipolar Disorder. However, it has notable differences and symptoms.
All personality disorders are challenging but not impossible to treat. The challenge is that the individual with this disorder can be inflexible in their thinking or perceptions of others. A personality disorder manifests in a distinct pattern of maladaptive behaviors and causes the individual extreme levels of distress. People with Histrionic Personality Disorder have a severe problem with maintaining relationships. People who interact with them feel like they’re undervalued since the individual with this disorder demands to be the center of attention most of the time.
People with Histrionic Personality Disorder frequently struggle to modulate their emotions and shift between emotional states abruptly. For example, one moment they may feel happy, and the next minute they’re suddenly furious about a seemingly tiny problem. They can be inappropriate in their behavior and not understand when to tone it down. People with this condition are often overtly sexual and engage in flirtatious behavior in improper settings.
If you believe that you have Histrionic Personality Disorder, seek out the help of a trained mental health professional. Whether you’re working with a therapist in your local area or an online counselor, you deserve to get the help you need.

Histrionics seem like the flip side of narcissists. It seems that, while narcissists are controlling & stoic, histrionics are demanding and overly emotional. I get the feeling that narcissists need to feel respected while histrionics need to feel loved

My experience with a person with a personality disorder seems to be that she had NPD with a dose of histrionic thrown in. After analyzing my time with the her it was readily apparent that NPD stood out as the reason for her actions and reactions, but as time went on I found that she also behaved in a histrionic way... overtly sexual and flirtatious in improper settings (at work) stood out, the center of attention, acted dramatically (usually when angry), overly concerned with appearance (she was very beautiful and dressed to kill whenever possible), impulsive (a trait common among all Cluster-B PD's). While you may be thinking that I might be evaluating her incorrectly I can assure you that NPD was her base: grandiose (fantasies of beauty, wealth, status), entitled, special, envious/envied, lack of empathy, impulsive, arrogant, exploitative... and I even got to see the narcissistic "injury" and "rage" when I confronted her about her behavior, lies, and even the "blank look" when I confronted her as she tried to gaslight me. Believe me when I say histrionic seems to go hand-in-hand with narcissistic PD, that I have seen the controlling and stoic as well as the demanding and overly emotional rolled into one. *I work with a person diagnosed as borderline, and I can also say that she may be misdiagnosed as she exhibits histrionic traits, or may be comorbid histrionic/borderline... and I should say that her histrionic traits are over-the-top yet not inappropriate, and I don't detect NPD (though I just learned of her condition and will be interested to see if she does exhibit any NPD traits).

I've been thinking about HPD and how more women than men are diagnosed with it. More men than women are diagnosed with NPD. Looking at the diagnostic criteria, I wonder if HPD and NPD (both being cluster B personality disorders) are actually 'more feminine' vs 'more masculine' manifestations of the same disorder. Both seek external validation for internal insecurities, both are manipulative, and both are concerned with status. HPD is generally more outwardly social, outwardly emotional, 'seductive', and dramatic. NPD is generally more focused on accumulating and exerting power, financial success, and is very competitive in those ways.
Of course, because there is a lot of overlap in traits between men and women, no doubt some men will be diagnosed as histrionic and some women will be diagnosed Narcissistic, but you would expect more women to manifest outwardly seductive and dramatic traits and more men to focus on exerting power and financial success.

    • @SuedeStonn
      @SuedeStonn Před 3 lety +4

I read a comment once that histrionics are the female NPD's, and I can see why they made that comment. My female NPD wanted power and control, being seductive and dramatic was just her way of attaining it. A histrionic seems to want love and attention whereas a narcissistic seems to want validation and admiration, and to get it will manipulate their loved ones (if you want to call them that), friends (if you...), etc (a catch-22 if you think about manipulating others to get validation/admiration). But then again PD's tend to mix-and-match, so you can get all kinds of manifestations. :P

It's all about understanding yourself and taking steps to work on your weaknesses and strengths. To all the histrionics, we deserve to be loved and valued ; love is a two street however. I was diagnosed not long ago. Almost everything is right, but I disagree with what she’s saying at 01:05. My emotions aren’t really superficial. Maybe because I can switch so suddenly it seems like my feelings aren’t genuine. They seem shallow, but in those moments I really am overly emotional. This this can be extremely frustrating, when people won’t believe that you’re really feeling this way. On the other side my therapist assumed I had a borderline personality disorder for a long time so I may be an exception.

If someone hurts u or is a bully it’s not a disorder forcing them to be that way - dont blanket everyone w this disorder as a bad lesson

Thank you for this video. It wasn’t kind to us but it helped us understand why we are the way we are. We don’t mean to be so traumatized and abused and broken. Many people suffering from this are just trying the best we can to survive the pain. Sometimes, we don’t even know we are hurting people. We just want people to like us and not hurt us. We just want the pain to go away and to not be hurt anymore. I guess for others... survival can look like manipulation.

Wow this is very interesting I learned a lot I learned some things about myself I came from a lot of abuse as a child my father was a sociopathic narcissist and my mother was codependent suicidal depressed and everything else at the same time. I married a cerebral narcissist that was 25 years older. it seems like I have traits of all of them but yet I've managed to still have my own ways my own personality which Wherever I Go draws a good crowd and maybe this is why my storytelling is so interesting. Anyways thats what people tell me . of course the abuse that we suffer as a child and there was much physical abuse emotional abuse by both mother and father it left me open to more later on because I was groomed at an early age , but I find this fascinating it shows me things about my own personality and how unique we all are and we are a gift , we should celebrate ourselves. if we are going to tell a story we should make it as interesting as we possibly could and stay with the facts tell the truth . THIS WAS VERY INTERESTING & THANKS .

Is there a personality disorder where you obsessively regret and dwell over past events and decisions? Depression?

People in the comment section need to know, the symptoms don't have to be over the top. It can be subtle little details you notice.

Sometimes in a new social situation I will dominate the conversation or just talk more than I really want to. If there is a lull in the conversation I will talk. At the end of the day I will feel ashamed of my over talking and try not to do it again but it’s very difficult! Does this sound like I’m histrionic?

I think my long time "friend" is this, but was misdiagnosed twice. She's always lying and as many said "one uping" me. I'd state what I like or want and she'd go for it first. How can I help her stop hurting my relationship with the first guy I ever fell for?

My sister is def has HPD and is now anti-social because of it, it can make you so uncomfortable to be misunderstood and called dramatic, after awhile you can go in a shell forever and just use substances to make up for what you are missing outside.

I help run a youth group that supports young people with depression and anxiety (although all are welcome). A girl has just joined who I could tell from the beginning was a compulsive liar and fits all the categories for HPD. She is incredibly tiring to deal with and makes it more difficult for others in the group (especially those with social anxiety). Any advice for how to deal with this? Particularly from people with HPD as I don’t want to upset or offend her.

Men and women with histrionic personality face excessive emotion, so they have the tendency to look at things in an emotional manner. Also, patients with this disorder are characterized as impressive people, full of life and energy, and are highlighted by their charm, enthusiasm and openness, by the developed ability to flirt.
