Lt. Col. Matt Ziemann, an Air Force officer, is an instructor at the Air Force's Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base. He has been a pilot for 26 years and has experience flying World War II-era planes. He rates the realism of World War II dogfight scenes in movies, such as "Dunkirk" (2017), starring Tom Hardy, and Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor" (2001), starring Ben Affleck.
John Curatola is the resident historian at The National WWII Museum and a retired Marine Corps officer. He discusses the accuracy of World War II battle scenes from "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), starring Tom Hanks; "Dunkirk"; and "Band of Brothers" E3 (2001), with Damian Lewis. He also comments on the weaponry used in "Fury" (2014), with Brad Pitt.
Garry Adelman, the chief historian at the American Battlefield Trust, rates nine American Civil War battles in movies. He comments on the Civil War-era artillery and rifles on display in "Glory" (1989), starring Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington; and "Lincoln" (2012), starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, and Tommy Lee Jones.
Alexander Watson, a World War I historian and professor of history at Goldsmiths, University of London, rates First World War battle scenes from movies and TV shows for realism. He discusses the accuracy of trench warfare in "All Quiet on the Western Front" (2022), "1917" (2019), and "Paths of Glory" (1957), starring Kirk Douglas.
Bill Allison is a professor of military history at Georgia Southern University. He rates the accuracy of Vietnam War movies, such as "Apocalypse Now" (1979), starring Marlon Brando; "Full Metal Jacket" (1987); and "Platoon" (1986), featuring Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, and Johnny Depp. Allison breaks down additional battlefield tactics used by the Viet Cong, or VC, and People's Army of Vietnam, or PAVN, shown in "Forrest Gump" (1994); "Hamburger Hill" (1987); and "The Deer Hunter" (1978), with Christopher Walken, Robert De Niro, and Meryl Streep.

@@akadacat I didn't like him either, but for different reasons. When he first said that part about "lowly army officer isn't calling someone way above his pay grade, an admiral, from a field radio", I immediately disliked him. First thing I thought was that this guy has to be some sort of officer thinking something like that. What is he supposed to do in the middle of a battle? Go up the chain of command one step at a time individually through each person and rank until his message reaches that person? Does he look for someone else on the beach who can? Does he talk to someone else? Or is he just supposed to not report anything and say oh well.
Then he also said "why would those soldiers just stand around in the water and not get in a boat", because there's no boat.
Then he talks about the tank being alone when there is clearly more tanks around. He goes on about the tank using its main gun against enemies, he admits it happens, but still says no.
He says the Germans weren't going to do something on their own or make their own choice when the German ethos during WWII was literally not to wait around for orders and to take initiative. The guy is a snob who thinks he's above "lowly soldiers" and that people should wait around and sit for orders.

Something that most people don't know . Is the Germans had to replace alot of there equipment and especially tanks after attacking Poland. Before they could attack France. Because the 1st tank aces of ww2 were polish.

As a former artillerymen I disagree with his comments on the air bursts in Patton With troops in the open as depicted here the first volley would at this time be timed rounds They were calculated to burst 7 meters in the air to focus all the fragmentation in a 20+ meter circle per round hitting standing and prone and dug in troops that don’t have overhead cover Later in the war (and today) they used a Variable Time fuze that had a small radar in it that exploded 7 meters above the ground eliminating the time of flight calculation to achieve the 7 meter hight of burst
In Charles McDonald’s book “A Time for Trumpets”, he mentions that the new artillery fuses were still in their field trial period during the Battle of the Bulge. The artillery units, disregarded the need for permission to use them with great effect. If you are not familiar with Charles McDonald, in WWII he was in the Bulge as depicted in his first book “Company Commander” and witnessed their effectiveness at the “Twin Villages”. He ended his career in the US Army’s History branch as assistant director.
The cool thing is the ENTIRE movie of Dunkirk is happening at the same time. We just cut to different points in the story in different times of the event.

Really liked the 3rd history nerd (glasses brit guy) on the show. His charisma is and a bit of sacism really made him stand out and you can listern to him nerding and flaming stuff done wrong in movies all day.

It was great seeing gettysburg being covered in one of these. Still one of my all time favourite war movies. Especially the bayonet charge, i get goosebumps every time i hear Chamberlain shout bayonets.

Well on the mg42 you can use long rates of fire. You replace the barrel after 2-300 rounds. Takes about 3 sec to replace it and let it cool down
Especially when you're in a bunker and probably have several spare barrels.

IF I remember correctly, each gun team had 6 barrels. That gives about 1 minute of firing LOL. The rate of fire was shockingly fast! Brilliant for an aircraft gun, but way faster than needed for an infantry weapon. Obviously a gunner wouldn't be going all out finger on the trigger all the time, but in theory he could! @@Fastwinstondoom
Nope (unless in a computer game), Its an air cooled gun. So one or two second bursts max or you'll start to melt barrels which is really bad news and not just a case of letting it cool down. However, a water cooled MG like a Vickers could fire continuously for a very long time, as long as you kept the water jacket topped up.

First thing that would be unacceptable and the n * z I s would have fired the designers and the manufacturers because how could they not account for that and how the heck would it have passed testing. There's plenty of WWII footage of soldiers firing entire multiple belts before changing barrels. You could easily find plenty of videos here on youtube of people shooting, no stops.
Metal isn't cheese, it doesn't just melt. Before melting it would turn red hot and burn, then it would warp and then deform. It would become nonfunctional before it ever, if it is even possible for it to, melt. I think it's not even possible for guns to reach the temperatures required for metal to melt.
I really appreciate him debunking Enemy at the Gates. I loved that movie as a kid, and I like many people thought these wild anti Soviet myth reflected reality. I learned years later this stuff was complete non sense, and it's a shame how movies like this can distort peoples understanding of history.

I heard it was exaggerated propaganda from a couple of instances during Barbarossa when encircled red armies who had basically no supplies left tried to break out of their encirclement out of desperation.
The validity of this I don’t know and I mean Russia really isn’t known for having the most accurate reports and the German ones tend to have the same issues too.
Part of the reason why the eastern front is so full of misinformation is largely because for a long time the only side of the eastern front we knew about was from the perspective of the German soldiers who fought them, so it was an extremely one sided recounting of what went on there.

Grandad landed on the beach aged 19 he thought the scene was ok but couldn’t portray the noise and how disorienting it was which all their training couldn’t replicate .

My great uncle was in the first wave At Omaha Beach, but didn’t land there. His barge was hit by artillery about a mile off shore and drifted past the Canadian beaches to the British beaches. Their captain, a sergeant and himself were the only non casualties. That current off the beach was that powerful.
German Anti-partisan units would usually use armored cars and obsolete light tanks, some that were captured earlier. Rare to see them use heavier tanks

Dunkirk was in may and june. The only thing I can think of, for the men to stand in the water is group body temp control. Wool or cotton uniforms in that heat all day waiting on the beach, I'd sure like to get in the water. Makes sense if they keep rotating to get in the sun, too
Ive seen in movies of the time where the pilot talks into a hand held mic. I know that was hollywood also. But it was during the war. With actors that joined up and fought along with acting.

The first guy faults Fury for not having the American tanks spread around the enemy and with one going in the middle, but a later scene when they face the large German tank they use exactly the strategy he was describing.
the first guy is a joke, its also not an ambush but a defensive position that the allies know they are holding., he talks about how tanks would fight other tanks, but in the scene they were fighting pak 40s and ground troops

@@micksmithson6724 You might want to look up Moran's lecture about US tank doctrine, he puts that old myth into perspective very well.
I've read that Soviet blocking troops, usually from the NKVD, did actually at times fire on troops making unauthorised retreats. Just as their predecessor, the Cheka, did to Red Army troops in the Russian civil war against the White Armies. Generally though, retreating troops were usually arrested by the NKVD troops, with many later, as stated in the vid, executed for desertion.
I am thinking a column of rebar reinforced concrete should be next for this round.

The thing about the ironclad in Sahara is they were built for operating in shallow water like a river, harbor and estuaries. Not designed for the open ocean and no way could it carry enough coal to make it to Africa.
Russians wouldn't use blocking units like that....fast forward to today and once again they are using blocking units as described in the movie.......

@@ristoravela652They literally are. There is drone footage of Russian blocking detachments in Ukraine shooting anyone who retreats in the Z Battalions they send rushing at the Ukrainian lines. The men in those battalions are also sent into battle without training or proper ammunition. They are literally doing the exact same thing.
To the so-called military historian. On D-day June 6th 1944, there were five beaches, not just Omaha and Utah beaches. An equal number of forces of the British Commonwealth landed on Gold, Sword and Juno beaches. There is no denying that Omaha Beach turned out to be by far the toughest.
(D-day) Why did they streatch out over such a far area? only think i can think of is stagnation, but why not fokus on one section and send more waves and artillary. If they notice another opening have a second wave go there.
Because having too many people in one spot can create a bottleneck, and then you just lead them to slaughter. Attacking on a larger front also means that any enemy reinforcements need to be split up.
@@manuelschneider1105Not only that but spreading out over a wider area means you can't just fire in one "sector", you have to have the gunfire focusing on the bunched up people or the people that are in the front sp to speak. You do bring up another point of why we didn't just go to one area and why the allied offense were so spread out.

28:21 Why inverted? Because diving while inverted will cause the pilot to experience positive G-forces. If done the opposite way, diving while not-inverted, pilot will face negative G-forces. Negative G-forces can impair vision and consciousness. Losing vision and consciousness during a steep dive can be fatal.

33:45 with the Memphis Belle clip, while it would never happen in history. In the movie the co-pilot wanted the tail gunner to call him back because he wanted to shoot a plane. Basically he was jealous that he wasn't the pilot and that to him he was basically in the most forgetful and unimportant position of the plane.
It would never happen because of doctrine. it could happen because they're human.

Always cracks me up when 2 "experts" see the exact same scene and have completely opposite comments. Example - The tank expert on a similar video mentions for the Fury clip that this was a viable option that they could've crossed this open area but the tracer rounds were way too overdone. The guy on this one states they would never line up like this and the amount of tracer rounds was fairly accurate. Pretty sad that with all of the knowledge we have, accounts of battles, video footage etc that so called experts still can have completely opposite opinions on things like this
It doesn't help that the first dude in this video seems to completely misunderstand what's happening. Calling it an ambush when the US forces clearly know what they're getting into.
Part of these problems are when you get a subject matter expert, say the Chieftain for armoured warfare and and a more generic military historian. For example, A GP (family doctor) and a cardiac surgeon. The surgeon is the subject matter expert for the Heart. The GP has a much wider range of general knowledge about medicine and various aliments. The surgeon focused on a small area for more in-depth knowledge at the expense of broader knowledge outside his specialty..
I'm actually shocked that I disagree with one of these guys, but at 8:35 it felt obvious to me that it seemed closer to a depiction of a panzer III rather than a panzer IV based on the size of the turret and the length and thinness (for lack of a better term) of the main gun

A Finnish commander Carl Mannheim described a human wave tactic as “incompressible fatalism” at the battle of Karelian isthmus 1939. The Russians suffering a staggering defeat by a much smaller Finnish force.

Dude ...unbroken 27:50 the top gunner called out 3oclock position out yet looks left to 9oclock as he's giving the tail gunner a heads up cos to top gunner 9oclock is left but for tail gunner topguns 9oclock is tail gunners 3 o'clock he's calling it out to tail gunner so there's more than the top gun firing at it the tail Gunn initiates and then top gun picks up as it comes in closer ... so it's actually pretty much in context and is accurate why would you call your own position out to yourself when you cam call out a more precise signal to the tail gun an let them know there's a plane heading at there right side of tail gunner....which to tail would be 3oclock the top gunners left side .....
Clock directions are always given relative to the vehicle, not the individual's position in the vehicle, though.
"3 o'clock" is 90° to the right of the bomber, not the individual gunner.
My Lai could have been an anomaly, except that American militarists reacted so wrongly to it that it became something more. They were furious not at the soldiers who committed war crimes, but at the journalists who publicized the atrocity and the whistleblower who told everyone about it. The fact that they directed their rage this way tells you that they were actually not that angered by the war crime itself, which in turn tells you that the culture in the military probably permitted and covered up plenty of other war crimes.
1:19:21 I never knew that they would not want lefties shooting in unison. It makes perfect sense but it just never occurred to me. Mind you I'm Scottish and raised by my Scottish grandmother who for some reason that will never make sense to non Brits or Western Europeans we were not allowed to be left handed. So I'm ambidextrous and can shoot ambidextrous also I can hit a moving Target. I think being very good at math and physics make you a much better shooter. And the very least it will give you a Fighting Chance when it comes to hitting a moving Target. If you can do calculations quickly in your mind and under pressure you can quickly calculate the distance needed to hit your target you need to calculate the distance they are going to be at not where they actually are when you pull the trigger
Not only is the first guy wrong about Soviet infantry doctrine, hes also wrong about artillery. Air burst is really the best burst.
Hey tank guy - the french tanks stopped and shot because that was the only way they could hit anything., They could not accurately fire on the move they did not have th ww2 Sherman tanks gun gyro stabilizer..

The WW2 expert really needs to reevaluate his take on the Battle of Stalingrad. Up until recently, I also thought the stories of human wave assaults were a myth. Then Russia started to do them in Ukraine.

The British have to invent Incendiary rounds to deal with airships. I "assume" he meant that tracer and incendiary look similar when fired.
I was really looking forward to the SPR critique. But, alas, another "historian" that has apparently avoided reading the Army's own critique of itself available on the US Army Center for Military History website. Very little that he said was accurate starting with the depth of the tidal flat. It was not 100 to 200 yards deep. The tidal range is 18' and the low tide tidal flat for the first wave was in the range of 325 ± 25 yards. Of the men unlucky enough to be landed opposite Vierville (the farthest west of all the draws leading off the beach) 50% were killed long before reaching the beach and the other 50% discarded their equipment and pretended to be dead, creeping in with the advancing tide and eastward with the current. The Army itself admitted that due to the wholly ineffective bombing plan 100% of the first wave landed opposite Vierville was rendered ineffective.
He also committed the unforgivable error of not stating that Omaha was approximately 5 miles wide. Due to the lousy overcast weather and the strong west to east tide many of the men were fortunate in that they were landed between draws (all of which were fortified with concrete bunkers) rather than their assigned points directly opposite the other draws. This is the only reason the first wave Vierville massacre was not repeated at the other draws and directly led to the three points that the soldiers got off the beach by ascending the 60 - 90 foot non-rocky bluffs that front the Omaha beach between the draws.
The presence of a Ranger captain at any draw is inaccurate. Those Rangers were to be reinforcements for Col Rudder at Point du Hoc but because all of Rudder's radios were rendered inoperative command deduced that the Point du Hoc mission had failed. The Ranger reinforcements were redirected to Vierville but the Ranger officer in command determined that everyone that had landed at Vierville were dead so they headed west away from Vierville in an attempt to flank Vierville. Ummm... About 500 yards? The dirt bluffs had given way to the more usual rocky type. They climbed the rock face using bayonets for pitons. The Rangers then spent the entire day in a firefight at the Stone House west of Vierville.
I give SPR a 10 for special effects and a zero for historical accuracy.
Bro half the units who dropped in or landed at Normandy were in the wrong place. It was chaos but there were enough officers to throw makeshift units together until a beachhead was secure and guys could rally with their proper units.

The single example I have with the commentators is this. They r telling us about what they say r historical inaccuracies in the movies while they use historically inaccurate words.
EXAMPLE.
The word PAVN NEVER EXISTED, during the Vietnam War that term would be appropriate AFTER North Vietnam's successful invasion of south Vietnam. The south's army was called ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam). The North Vietnam regular army was called NVA( North Vietnamese Army) NOT PAVN and then there was the VC (Vietnamese Communist) which were local people that were irregulars/ guerillas fighting for North Vietnam.
Never heard the term PAVN until the 21st century.

I can see where he's coming from on that one, though; we don't know how infantrymen would engage a demigod or other superhuman because it has never happened. It would be like today's armed security forces confronted with someone like, say, Cloud Strife. "He's still slicing us up like butter! Why isn't he on the ground bleeding out? We've already shot him _nine times!"_

Yes it’s a bad tactic but they had to do anything they could. Also yes they did have soldiers ready to shoot their own if they retreated. At one point during the war Stalin gave the not one step back order. That’s when they started to have lines of NKVD soldiers shooting any who retreated
Sending in men with no guns was not as bad as it seemed as casualties were high and you would find a spare rifle lying around very quickly! Stalin was quoted as saying quantity has a quality all its own.

I agree that first "historian" seemed to know very little about Omaha Beach. A few years ago I read the after action reports with maps that were collected on the US Arny Center for Military History website on why the Omaha landing nearly failed and how the landing was only saved through the personal initiative of three on the ground commanders. I give SPR a 10 for special effects and a zero for historical accuracy.

Actually the P40 could do a knife edge pass through-- the P 40 was the allies most manueverable fighyer.. It had the faster roll rate of any allied fighter in WW2. As you well know- everything starts with a roll.. At speeds above 240 miles per hour the P 40 could even out turn the Japanese Zero- proven fact dude- check you sources before you run your mouth.

Have you flown a P-40? I have--and no it can't. You're right about it being maneuverable--it has a better roll rate than a P-51 and is lighter on the controls, and you can roll into a knife edge, but what you don't see at airshows or playing a flight simulator is that in doing so, the aircraft is still descending (there's not enough rudder authority to keep the airplane truly in level flight) AND the lift vector (like an arrow pointing straight up out of the cockpit) is pulling the aircraft. You would have to push forward on the stick to keep from flying into the building...but even if you were a perfect enough pilot to do that you just don't, as I said, physically have enough rudder to keep you from sinking and impacting the street.
