  • Federal officials discovered that more than 100 minors were found working in meat packing facilities across the Midwest, many of them cleaning slaughterhouses with dangerous chemicals. The company that employed those children has now been forced to pay more than a million dollars in fees. NBC’s Julia Ainsley reports.

@@MrEvtmazda Unions have plusses and minuses. You mentioned some of the plusses. The minuses are that everything turns into a complex legal negotiation involving a complex labor contract. Also, the relationship between management and labor is often adversarial rather than co-operative, which can lead to things never getting done. As such, unions, like a lot of things in life, are a series of trade offs.

My very first job at age 16 was working for a company that rented out those huge tents for big outdoor events. I made blueprints for them. My boss, son of the owner, was a terrible human being and his father was a day drinker. They paid a wealthy looking woman named Junia to supply them with workers and fake paperwork. Most of their employees were illegal; most from Ecuador, Brazil, or Eastern Europe. I vividly recall one day when I had nothing to work on and my boss took me to a job site. On the way we stopped at a building his family owned in town. The top two floors were housing where most of the illegal employees lived, the ground floor was a laundromat, and the partially exposed basement had a sewing shop. The shop had no windows and it was summer, very hot and muggy with the strong smell of adhesives and vinyl. In the shop was one boy, alone at a sewing machine, who was introduced as Domingo. I asked how old her was and my boss goes “Domingo! Sixteen años?” To which the boy just nodded. I quit that job not long after, as they owed me 11 weeks’ pay. The receptionist reached out to me a while later and asked if I wanted to be a part of a lawsuit that was being filed by the employees against the company. One of their key complaints was the treatment of Domingo, who was 12 and had allegedly been physically assaulted by my boss on several occasions. I gave a statement, but didn’t really have grounds to join the suit as I hadn’t been abused and they had paid me what they owed. The business is still operating, somehow.

Companies and illegal immigrants are both liable for breaking labor laws but this has been going on for years they get away with it. They want to make it out like these children are victims but in many cases they are purposely and willfully applying and agreeing to work the hours. My first job was age 11 working for a local farmer moving irrigation pipe in his fields. It was very hard work. My first week on the job, my arm was in a cast-which i had to wrap in plastic to keep the plaster from getting wet.
That was 45 years ago. I feel gratitude to the farmer who employed me. I didn't feel the job was abusive. I felt it gave me the chance to learn how to do hard things. I feel a large part of the workforce problem today is that young people have not learned these lessons by the time they reach working age.
While teenagers are minors, they shouldn't be equated to small children. They are capable of doing hard things. It is not necessarily abuse if they are working at hard jobs.

I dont feel I was exploited. Young people are capable of doing more than we give them credit for. Its easy to pass judgement. That job let me earn the money to purchase an instrument that let me participate in band in Jr. High. Later I earned enough money to buy my first computer. It took me two years to do. It was a Comodore 64. Now I make my living as an IT manager. It would have been exploitation if I had not been given a choice. I chose to work as a way to open up opportunities for myself. People started to notice because she was frequently late and seen being dropped off by a company van. It says Middle School right on the building, not College or University. There's no confusion on how old the kid is. This is child abuse at the very least and the parents or guardians are obviously in on it. The kids aren't kidnapped out of their houses each night. It's also not likely that this is the only thing horrible happening to these kids. Parents pimpin their kids out. It seems to be isolated to the immigrant community here.
