Anthony Quinn presenting Miyoshi Umeki with the Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "Sayonara" at the 30th Academy Awards® in 1958. Introduced by Jack Lemmon.
I think it's amazing and rather touching too that a little over a decade after World War II a naturalized American, a Japanese born actress was honored with the American Oscars! :) My first memory of Miyoshi was as Mrs. Livingston, the housekeeper of Bill Bixby's and Brandon Cruz's characters, in the TV series The Courtship of Eddie's Father. I remember watching reruns of the show in the early '70s. I loved her in "Flower Drum Song" too. RIP to a great lady, the lovely and elegant Umeki..
@@evancbiju474 Maybe he meant as an actress or actor. Plus, Asian is not exactly the same as Asiatic... for us Westerners. But I appreciate your comment. Do you recall the year?
Miyoshi Umeki is so sweet! Every time I see beautiful Miyoshi she has such a sweet demeanor & a pleasant face & smile. She was marvelous in Sayonara. She was quite magnificent in Flower Drum Song as well.
Yes. The 50s were certainly very strange times. For some reason, artistic achievement and individual accomplishments were considered to be more important than race, ethnicity or diversity. Amazing how we survived at all !
What a sweet and gracious speech. Not only a beautiful woman but a beautiful soul. And if you have not yet seen SAYONARA get a box of tissues and settle down.
Umeki certainly deserved it. With a role that really hasn't got much depth, she managed to make the most of what she had to work with. Her performance is so full of pathos it's impossible not to feel love and pity for the character of Katsumi.
I LOVED HOW MIYOSHI LET IT BE KNOWN THAT SHE LOVED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. A CLASSY LADY. AND VERY DESERVING OF THAT OSCAR. FOR ONCE THEY GAVE IT TO THE RIGHT PERSON.
Philippe- Maybe because she was indeed the best supporting actress that year? as opposed to the current trope of identity politics demanding people get Oscars because they are a minority?

@TIPTON340 She most certainly did more than say "Sayonara." She had some heart-wrenching scenes and her performance had an authenticity that is difficult to successfully convey on screen.

This was a surprisingly tough competition. Carolyn Jones was absolutely solid and unforgettable in the otherwise bland Bachelor Party; the two Peyton Place actresses were very good, especially Hope Lange; Elsa Lanchester was a favorite; and Umecki was beautiful in Sayonara. Tough choice.
I would argue that the real love story in Sayonara was between Red Buttons and Umeki. It was so intense and beautiful. And unfortunately, they lived out the kabuki theater metaphor. :(
Agreed. And I think that the Academy felt that they could not give the Award to Umeki and not to Buttons so he won for Supporting Actor (a performance that really breaks the heart).
She was the best actress and human being. Flower Drum Song, Sayonara, The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Her work is brilliant. Remember when award shows were award shows?

Amazing. I bet she was great in Sayonara, until now there weren’t Asian actors for Oscars, Michelle Yeoh should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Crazy Rich Asians
First Oscar for Japan then came some others like Spirited Away for Best Animated Feature and Departures for Best Foriegn Language Film and now Drive My Car for multiple awards. Shoplifters was also nominated. Someday we may get a Japanese movie for Best Documentary Feature
it is strange that only 12.5 years after WW2 they recognized a Japanese woman, but haven't since- prejudice /anti Japan sentiments were still extreme then...but no one has ever written 500 editorials about why Asians are over looked year in year out
Yes, there were pundits back then. Most predicted that Diane Varsi would win for her role in "Peyton Place". Only problem was that Hope Lange from the same film was also unforgettable. All four of her competitors deserved to win: an embarrassment of riches, one could say. Red Buttons, her lover in the film won the supporting actor; and Myoshi Umeki's character won her the Oscar. If you want to see her in some very comedic moments, see " Flower Drum Song".
Taking nothing away from puppies, penguins, and koala bears, Miyoshi Umeki was the single most adorable creature on the face of the earth at the time and a talented actress and singer as well. One of the funniest things I ever saw and heard was her imitation of Billy Eckstine. Wish I could find it somewhere on youtube. She was also something of a riot in Flower Drum Song. "My back is wet." Her performance in Sayonara was lovely to behold, but I would have liked to see Piper Laurie included among the nominees as Jean Simmons' self-destructive sister in Until They Sail.

Why not just move to Japan if you want to see more of them winning awards. Last time I checked this was America dude. They are super minority here. Not many Americans are winning Japanese awards are they? Can you name one? Probably not right? I don't even think White Americans exist in their filming industry. You talk about racist. Ha! Go to Asia and see just how racist they can get. Americans are a lot more willing and accepting. You got some nerve. Blacks are treated like dirt over there too. You would never see any in a Japanese film? They are even known to shrink Black actors on American film posters etc. What in God's name is wrong with them? You can definitely forget about Blacks winning any awards. I hope this get through to you. I will be honest with you. I do think the Asian community could get a little more love and recognition in America, but it's simply not going to be many winning awards. Simply not an Asian country dude. What do you expect? Go to Hong Kong or something.
