ABOUT UPROXX INDIE MIXTAPE:
Indie Mixtape is the go-to for all things indie music. We serve as a funnel to make sure that only the best music -- new and old -- is delivered directly to the people who care the most.
Indie is more than a music genre. It's a sensibility. The indie fan may be overlooked in our current cultural climate, but they're alive and well -- going to see live music, visiting art galleries, and prioritizing substance over facade. This is for you. - Hudba
Freshmen year in high school, used to walk around the hallways with this album in my headphones. I'm 50 now and still love it.
I’m 68. Keep rock in’!
sophomore and doing the same thing now!🤟
Same but I'm 42
Funny thing almost, as Alex Chilton was not all that loved by Paul. Just put him in the song for rhyming and lyric purposes and he was obscure and Paul liked those Left of the Dial.
Have memories of when I lived in Toronto. Getting subway home late on a Friday or Saturday night, stopping off for a slice at the pizza place at Yonge & Bloor before heading back to my lonely apartment and putting "Pleased to Meet Me" on in my cassette player.
I'm now an old man with two adult children and an completely insane wife. But I'm still in love with this song!!!
one of the greatest R&R songs of all time. i don't understand why it's not more popular.
Yeah who knows why? People have sort of bad tastes and the replacements have a way of making the greatest r&r songs less popular than they should be. Kidding but a current remix of their albums does make their songs even better.
Thanks Dad for playing this song all the time when I was a kid!
You're welcome, Son. Now, stop touching my records!!
This was my surfing song. 1989. Camp pendleton
Semper Fi.
Beer league softball song, Chicago suburbs in the forest preserves. Late 80's.
One of the greatest tribute songs from one of the best about another. Classic!
More people, especially kids these days should listen to Big Star.. R.I.P., Mr. Alex Chilton.
I'm grateful for Alex Chilton. I dream that my daughter will fully appreciate the journey of Sir Chilton.
The Replacements figured out a great way to tell the company they had signed a contract with how to stick it with this series of videos. The Pixies also did it in the '90s. Gotta love it! Great tunes!
Many years ago, when I worked in the world of rock, I got to take care of this band during their stint at Boston’s Channel club. Paul Westerberg richly rewarded me by throwing up, barely missing my feet. Tommy Stinson, the teenage bassist, kept hitting on me, but I wasn’t interested in that sort of thing, even with a 17 year old as cute as he was. It was a brilliant night, though. Great group of guys, and one of the best bands ever.
God thats a great story, not a doubt in my mind that night was awesome!!
@@basedsouljah one of the best nights of my life, thanks!
Subbed
Hahaha. Yeah. That would be them . Pack of degenerate self entitled shitbags! It's amazing that any of them survived. Paul especially. I'm still a fan. Jeebus bless you for putting up with that shit. He's embarrassed about it now. Not sure if he's sober, but at least sane.
Oh what an honor
I'm in love with that song ❤
First song that made me aware of The Replacements. Fan ever since. Didn't discover Alex and Big Star until a bit later. Amazing confluence of talents in their respective legacies.
Paul actually was only a little into Big Star and Alex Chilton for a couple years . It's overblow said Paul. Big Star = 5 good songs. Paul = 50 good-great songs with the Replacements and solo.
Holy shit, the same thing happened to me!
Just regular midwestern guys. No affect. Brilliant rock music. So proud to be from Minneapolis, the bands are fantastic.
I didn't know it was possible to love this song more until I saw the video.
THE REPLACEMENTS ARE MY SHIT AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN JUST LETTING YOU KNOW
I’ll try to avoid stepping in The Replacements, then.
I truly love this band. I've had the fortunate opportunity to see them several times live at different times in the band's and my life. Just the best.
I've seen them quite a few times. Minnesota and Wisconsin when I was in college. When I moved to Florida, I'd drive 5 hours to see them in some dive bar in Tallahassee or wherever. Fortunate to have met and had conversations with Paul several times. The Replacements were a huge part of my young adulthood.
shitty band live..Westerberg was usually plastered..the other guys played off key..and could not sing worth a shit..saw them 5 times..which was 4 times I wasted my dough..
I'd bicycle by the lead singer walking his wife and baby around Lake Harriet. Minneapolis!!💜💜
@@shasta0919 That's so great to hear. Did they show up sometimes too plastered to play or is that somewhat apocryphal?
I only saw Paul once with Prince's drummer. Miss Chris Mars so much after that sledgehammer.
"Cerebral rape and pillage in a village of his choice, An invisible man who can sing in a visible voice."
That is some good lyrics right there.
* * * Crap, I always thought it was "We will rape and pillage" that was how I sung it inebriated ... had to use that word cause my kids know what drunk means
I always heard “so he will rape and pillage in the village of his choice” which struck me as an odd thing to say about someone you’re trying to warm your audience up to, haha
Not really. He's written far better even on the same record
Everything about this song just makes me feel young again. Great song from a great band from a great decade to be a young music lover...
Probably my favorite from The Replacements. It's the atmosphere in this song that is somehow very special
A genius singing about another genius
Wrong on both counts
@@docsavage8640 nerds will never get rock n roll
Well said.
@@docsavage8640 L opinion
@@docsavage8640 Paul is, Alex just didn't do enough great songs but Paul did 40 great songs.. more than Dylan or Neil Young and far more than Paul McCartney
Great band with a massive self destructive streak, as indicated in this video
I'm 10 years old and I like the replacements everybody at my school hate rock n roll but my friend likes rock roll
Constantine Morano you’re on the right track youngster. Pavement, Pixies, Joy Division, Build to Spill are some you should look into.
Don't forget JAWBREAKER too.
But don't write off your classmates' music either. There's cool stuff in every genre.
dude you're probably 11 now so it's a great time to start listening to The Menzingers
You have amazing taste! Check out New Day Rising by Husker Du - that record changed my life when I was your age. Keep rocking!
Constantine Morano u r a fucking bad ass kid. I wish I knew someone like u. I’m 17 and I’ve been listing to them since I was a fucking baby. How did u find them.
When I'm feeling a little down, I go to The Replacements to get up!
Man, this brings me right back to freshman year. I must have listened to this record and "Tim" a couple hundred times apiece - found both of the tapes in a box in my dad's basement the summer before I left for Vancouver. Took 'em with me when I went, and the rest is history.
Can never get enough of this.
What a great song. What a fantastic guitar sound
Overdrive
Arguably the best music video of all time, made all the sweeter considering that it out in the mid 80’s, the grotesque heyday of MTV.
Its an antivideo, MTV being the disease at the time
When we were kids we had to stay up past midnight to see our new videos!!!! This wasn't pop radio stuff.
Brings back memories of hearing this in the early 90s on 106.7fm KROQ. Flashback lunch hour.
Holy Shit!! THis song is killer!!!
Fkin oath it is ;)
Now get stuck into Replacements and Big Star
Brings back memories of better times.
I heard this track in my high school days great memories.
I'll never forget stumbling upon this gem of and album in a Sam goodies in Woodbridge, Virginia in 1989. My God I love them Replacements. Second favorite act from Minnesota aside from Atmosphere. Peace y'all.
Well I like them better than any band. Are you thinking Dylan, Husker Du, or Prince? Judy Garland?
Can't believe this wasn't a huge video back in the day
Replacements = Minnesota natives … Alex Chilton = lead singer for “Big Star “⭐️
When worlds collide.
I am a young fetus and I absolutely love Big Star and the Replacements. Can't wait to get out into the world and shake Paul W's hand.
I’ve done it. It was amazing.
I live in the same town I want to meet him
You are not a fetus, you are part of a woman's body, and if she decides she no longer wants that part of her body, you won't be shaking anyone's hand - misogynist!
@Dominic Brady No, I am always the same size, give or take a couple of pounds, the exit is to your left, thanks for playing
hell yes !you rule !im glad Mr Westerberg and moreover the replacements are still getting young fans..their music is generationless and appropriate for any and all occasions,,,you rule
They blew the budget for this video on the pack of Marlboro Reds and the garage sale furniture. "I've got it! Paul, sit on that chair, eat a cheeseburger, light up a dart and stick your finger in your ear. Genius!"
If I remember correctly this song was on the album Pleased to Meet Me
Yep. Many heard it first from Rock Band 2
Oh Fuck Yeah it is!
hell yes !you rule !im glad Mr Westerberg and moreover the replacements are still getting young fans..their music is generationless and appropriate for any and all occasions,,,you rule
I never go far without a little Big Star. Or without a little 'Mats, for that matter. RIP Alex. And RIP Bob Stinson.
Do you know that Alex Chilton has played guitar fills on Can’t Hardly Wait ? I think he loved this song which was named after him. Paul and Alex were both legends, they still are. RIP Alex
Alex Chilton is Indie Rock’s Elvis.
If only Elvis had had a song called 'I Wish I Could Meet Alex...'
Accurate
This song made me fall in love with The Replacements. I was 10 and I loved rock and roll and raspy voice singers.
Should've been a hit when it was released 31 years ago. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music (and longtime Replacements fan)
radio was rigged back then to promote shit like shitney houston and jacko not good songs like this.
Hey now, don't slag on Whitney like that
Aguanten los Replacements!
Saludos desde Monte Grande, Argentina!
Mario, you are so freakin' right.I was 20 when i first this,a hundred years ago, and crank this song whenever the spirit moves me.Damn the neighbors.
This was my teen song in Quebec city . ❤❤❤
Criminally underrated band!
The Replacements made anti-video music videos and they're all great
kind of lame actually.
The video for Bastards of Young is particularly great, LOL.
Despite the amazing lyrics by Paul and the wonderful instrumentation and song structure, what I admired much about this band was how much effort they put in to their videos. ;)
Truth.
Anti Videos.
Miss those days, just watchin videos...
@@weedmanwestvancouverbc9266 absolutely
@@aro5490 Replacements wanted to succeed but sabotaged themselves at every opportunity. The drunken concerts where they only played cover tunes of other people's music or the videos where they just sat around drinking smoking and eating and then kicking holes in the speakers at the end. They were without a doubt Their Own Worst Enemy.
Best band ever. Don't even argue.
....and the best video ever!
They're not even the best band from Minneapolis
Christian Minneapolis must have some pretty fucken good bands!
That would be.......Vixen...
kidding. I thought Husker Du was from St. Paul
So right.
Heard this being played over the PA during the NYR @ Min game before a face off the other night. Shout out to the Min arena sound guys
My Generation...vinyl Record albums & MTV...Nobody alive now recalls “punk rock”...Well the Replacements were quintessential American punk, at the same time as Prince! Can you imagine how we compared Tim vs Purple Rain?
Chaz Seymour I certainly remember punk and still do! I’m 48 and I grew up listening to Sex Pistols - fear - clash Raymones, black flag , etc and basically grew up on alternative :)
@@darkmantis69 Am 57 and you forgot television, talking heads, patti smith, the deadboys, and so many others... We are lucky we were there at that point in time...
Do you really mean "nobody alive" or just no young people?
Punks not dead till the last fan stops listening! Plus the cultural impact that is has made will never disappear.
Paul was our Dylan
phil oats And his band was Minnesota state’s Beatles
@@Abegoldhatch But is Paul Minnesota's Dylan?
Frank Irons Of course. Although I love Bob Mould so much.
Dylan didn't sabotage himself and has more good songs.
@@Abegoldhatch more like Chocolate Watch Band
I don't know who Alex Chilton is, but I LOVE this song!
I beg you if you love this learn who he is asap
Only the Replacements would put out a promo video like this. I will always love them as the last of a long line of favorite bands -- when I die they will be my favorite band.
I love this video. It's just them being them. In 2019 u see the same style and the same vibes. Successfully imitated. But.. ain't nothing like the real thing baby.
The replacements make me want ot be a better person.
That was never their intent.
I saw them 6 times some of shows of all time
Whatever "cool" may be, that's it right there.
Such a damn great song!
Love this song
nearly a perfect song
What do you mean nearly?
Just found this song it’s sooo dope yo
Great Song !
This and Bastards of Young, the Replacements had zero interest in making videos. It's amazing
the video is beautiful!
so. ...sooo good
best rock video...ever
I always liked the "Bastards of Young" video a little more, but these videos were really a good funny way to stick it to the label.
This is the best song about another musician.
How can you give this song the thumbs down? Totally under appreciated band
Great song. Stupid video.
Awesome vid!! The world failed to this band.
video is horrible, but a great song
Great song love the box tops!
Amazing song, amazing song
Good people good music!
Years ago I used to work in Boston annd heard these guys. Then forgot about them until 5 minutes ago. Sometimes CZcams lives up to its reputation.
Legendary
Thank you rock band 2 for show me this masterpiece
I fucking love this band.
One of those cases where intentionally dull camera shots end up being fascinating.
Very nice 😃😊❤️🎶🎶🎶
this is a great song..... : )
This video fits the Replacements very well, considering the videos they shot for the "Tim" record.
If you read up on The Replacements ,you'll find they hated music videos and, although contractually obligated to make them, always sabotaged them.
Which made them contractually obligated to toil in obscurity and sell a minimal number of albums when they should and could have reached a larger audience. Terrible career move
Probably the drug abuse by Bob, and somewhat by the rest was the real career limiting move. I saw them before and after he left, and they weren't the same.
Cool song.
An anti-music video*
*The opposite of all that was extravagant and indulgent in music videos.
Adam Vanderpluym: I hate music, but I love The Replacements!!!
I love the part where nothing happens🤣👍
I wish my friends liked The Replacements as much as I did, but then again, I'm glad they don't.
i dont like music, its got too many notes.
This was completely the opposite of anything on Golden Age Mtv. No explosions, big hair, no big boobs or asses, no fire or sparks or torn denim or leather, or smoke and fog etc. It was a big FU to Mtv circa 1985.
At least this video has cuts in it. The 'Bastards Of Young' video is as "anti-music video" as it gets.
, drummer from urbosleeks here. Yeah i was in Athens before katrina, and i moved back home right before katrina. Still in new orleans. I was born here. For 20 years i have been looking for music buddies and had no idea alex was here.
fuck yeah.....great tune great band
I, too, am drinking. So great......
Best vid in history irl.
One of their greatest efforts!
They originally made this video for "The Ledge," but MTV disallowed its release due to poor timing - national news was up in arms about a recent teen suicide pact. "The Ledge" flopped as a single in general, and in classic Mats style, when it was time to release a video for "Alex Chilton," they literally used the same exact footage and just changed out the song
And ten years later "wont you step back from that ledge my friend" was a huge hit...man...timing...
Put this in my veins.
Saw them in 92 (First Avenue) with my pal Julie Lehman!!
hottest song ever
Westerberg and the Stinsons Brothers, where the Hottest Band in Minneapolis/St. PAUL AREA. AND THEY WERE LIKE 16,18 YEARS OLD! WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ROCK AND ROLL?
This is the ultimate cult song. Like a cult band releasing a song about a cult artist. Cultception.
Also fucking amazing song by a fucking amazing band
Video is boss
Can't get more 'Punk Rock' than this video! FV
My dad is a *huge* Replacements fan. So naturally, he got me hooked on them as *well* ! "Alex Chilton" is by far my absolute favorite song of theirs!
Alex Chilton told me to shut up once. True story.
I believe you.
Hey rock and rollers----this is the way to MAKE IT BIG----in the music business!!!!
saw them on the cover of Cream. bought this album. Fucking best thing I've ever done.
