As a white female barber I cut any head that walks in, we don’t often get black folks in but I can still do a mean fade. I keep a drawer full of special tools and products just for black hair. It is fun to me because you do have to cut the hair differently and I have started to gain a black clientele because of the care and love I put into my craft. My clients have said even the black barber shops dont fully pick out their hair like I do and that makes me happy because I want to take the best care for every one of my client’s. ALL are welcome in my chair! You can tell this woman was intentionally trying to hurt this woman… just by the way she is trying to comb out her ends just straight yanking her BLEACHED hair.

Let’s be realistic. The way they were looking at the camera and both doing a little too much, supports that it was a skit. We can’t assume things are real when it’s this staged. The camera or phone is set up right in front of them, is stationary and it’s doubtful the stylist would be doing all that eye rolling unless she knew she was filming and would be posting the video. 😅

I’ve been telling people for years, If you have to put a color descriptive in your sentence about another human being, you inherently are the problem! And it takes a while for people to understand what that means. We are all human. We all bleed the same color. Like you said there’s only one race and that’s the human race! When I meet someone new, I don’t even see color. I judge people on their character and I give back the energy that is given to if another person comes at me respectfully they will get respect back every time no matter what they look like, but if they come at me sideways, they’re gonna get that back in double. We’re all human we all make similar mistakes and we all want the same things out of life. to be loved and to be happy. Neither of those are dependent on skin tone.
      stay blessed!

She braided my hair with hair added in and it was gorgeous. At that time everyone was wearing braids, it was the Alisha keys era . This style allowed my hair to grow enough to be able to get a proper cut when taken out. The braids kept me from getting bullied . The stylist was nice and even made fun of herself for not being able to get my last braid because of my fine hair. She was a cool lady . I would never get them now knowing the stigma that comes with a non Blk person having braids (I’m Latina) but man it sure would be nice to not have to mess with my hair again for a few weeks. 😩😂♥️ my friends brag about how the braids are nice for them in this Texas heat because their scalp can feel the breeze and I’m sad that I’ll never experience that again😢😂

I'm so sick of hearing about this. Braids have been a popular hairstyle for a lot of countries, including European ones. And about that "black ppl have thicker "hard wooden" scalp" that's not true, if it was, black ppl probably couldn't left their head off of the ground or their heads would be much heavier to the point where they can't stand up straight,
Edit: Sorry forgot to say this. It's the hair that's different, not the scalp. One can handle looser braids while the other can handle tighter ones. I know there is another reason, I just don't remember what. Sorry :(

Here in Australia cultural appropriation wasn't really talked about until social media became really big. Now we do have issues of real appropriation here, where Indigenous Australians have had their artwork taken from their ancestral country, sacred sites have been destroyed, and people in the tourism industry have made fake artworks that claim to be made on country by local indigenous artists. However, people here are often happy to share their culture specifically through food but I've also had such positivity and excitement when talking to Chinese people about their tea culture and Melbourne is well known for embracing coffee and the various cultures associated with coffee.

When I was a child, my mom (the white parent) used to detangle my hair when it was dry, leading to a LOT of pain. My dad (the black parent) and my godmother (Puerto Rican Taino) knew my hair had to be wet/damp because my hair was a lot more like theirs while my mom's was wavy and could be brushed out while dry. Im white girl with natural red hair. I got my whole ass head braided when i was in 5th grade when i went on vacation and my hair and head was fine. (Aside from getting burned but that’s my fault for not putting sunscreen on my scalp.)
The best part was when i took them out at school about a month later, this black girl who i didn’t know, i had seen her around but i didn’t actually know her or her name, came right up to me and started helping me. Basically told my friends to get lost so she could take care of it cuz she knew what she was doing and gave me all sorts of advice like to wash my hair when i got home but NOT before i brush my hair cuz my hair would fall out. She was so nice and helped me when she didn’t need to.
Just a girl helping out another girl, that’s all it was and thats all I saw it as. Why can’t we go back to that?

I thought hairdressers were supposed to respond to their client’s pain and adjust accordingly, so I can’t believe she posted the video in the first place when all it does is make her look unprofessional and bad at her job. My black friends have had to get braids taken out for being too tight, and it’s a larger concern than whether or not the braids will stay because braids that are too tight will cause hair loss on ANYONE. You can’t just slap a style onto a person without customizing it to their body. She should’ve stopped when the woman screwed up her face and just made the braids a little bit looser while explaining why.

I grew up in a majority black neighborhood. I had my hair done by black women when I was a little girl. They asked me if I was tender-headed. I was not. One of my black friends was. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with whether or not you've got a tender head.

Look, ik it's frowned on to say "I got a lotta black friends" but I grew up in New Orleans so ofc I do and not one of my friends keeps a straight face while they get they're braids done. Lol men and women alike. When we were kids in school I went along and sat and watched, fascinated, wanted it done too so bestie and me could match. Her mom paid to get some lil side braids put in bc she didn't wanna change my hair up to much without my mom's consent but bestie and me thought we were twins for weeksssss and sooooo many adults were cruel to us both bc of it. Grown people told me I was racist and stealing culture, grown people told bestie she was betraying her race etc etc. We didn't understand and cried ofc and both our moms went full Mama Bear. Were in our late 20s now and still get our hair done together. Sometimes I still get some braids put in. Funny thing is I'm Dutch and moved to the US later and braids are a part of our culture too. Different kinds of braids but the further north you go, the closer to the scalp people braid etc and it comes from Norse cultures and germanic cultures needing to keep their hair tucked away for farming or battle. Braids don't belong to one race or culture and as a kid I was SO confused moving to the US where everybody seems to somehow own something and never shared. Suddenly I was mocked for having my braids done even tho it was a shared cultural tie for us both, just in different ways. As an adult, I left the US as soon as I could. Even diagnosed with PTSD (not hair related) for the crazy shit that goes on there. It's a really messed up country with a bizarre concept of freedom that poisons the perspective of anyone ingrained in American culture.

I’m white and had used braids most my life because I had thin hair but didn’t want it short. I braided it because of work regulations. I’m old now and have arthritis so I can’t braid it down anymore so I keep it short. Fine thin wispy hair just isn’t good for length. It’s too fly away and easily breaks. I could do it myself because I only had enough hair for two 1/8” thick braids.

  • @evlinboo9071
    @evlinboo9071 Před měsícem

Right, It’s not about what race is made for braids but about if your scalp is used to tight hairstyles like braids or not .
As a 4c hair that avoided tight braids my whole life and mostly do soft twists to keep my scalp healthy, when my mom tries to do braids style on my hair I have the same facial expressions this lady has.
You can be black and have a sensitive scalp just like you can be caucasian and have a strong scalp, caucasian vikings used to do small braids styles and they were used to it.

Not even the comment on braids, but that scalp comment 👀 umm, I know a lot of Black folks who cannot even sit through the combing out of the kinks before the braiding process. I did one lil boy's hair in braids & he was so tender headed (all his hair was super coarse) that he would squirm in his chair & was low-key crying. I felt bad & wanted to stop. Esp because I'm not a pro, I'm an amateur braider that just braids me & my son's natural hair with an occasional loved one's hair. I cannot even braid tight if I wanted to, & that boy couldn't handle it "hard headed" & all. I hope that White woman left a bad review

I went to beaches in Mexico years ago and a lot of ladies and their daughters walk the beach looking to braid people's hair right there as a way to make money. I'm white and had super long hair. First of all cultures overlap, so before you start screaming about appropriation, maybe take a peek at world history and other peoples from around the world. Second, while I do not doubt your culture has a rich history of braids, so do MANY others. Since the Stone Age, when braids entered common usage. Third, why are you being so ROUGH??!? Any stylist who touched me like that might get hurt, and I most certainly wouldn't stay in your chair! Don't take your anger or your RACISM out of your clients!

Interesting flex that your clients have to be particularly tough to tolerate your braiding? Haven’t we settled by now that overly tight braids are a great way to end up with thinning hair and receding edges? So cool, basically you just advertised that you always braid so tight your clients are going to be in pain and if they see you regularly they’ll probably lose hairs.
