    I think it's pretty simple, he's getting on in age. It's just a simple calculus of it being better to find his younger replacement now than to be surprised by it in the middle of a project. Especially after what happened with Satoru Iwata. But they also probably don't want Martinet to go doing a 'Mario' like voice elsewhere and wanted to keep him out there doing the convention circuit being the face of Mario. So I'd bet he isn't fired or retired but on retainer instead. Or as they called it, an ambassador.

    I mean anything is possible but I don't think it's that bad. I personally asked him when he came to Montreal Comicon 2022 what he liked doing the most and he told me "oh I love doing those voices but for me the best is really to meet fans in events" so I really think it was a mutual understanding with Nintendo that he would stop but continue being the face of mario with fans.

    I doubt Nintendo would actually screw a voice actor for one of their most popular characters for the past 20+ years. There's most likely no hard feelings between the 2 sides and how he likely understands and they understand that eventually they'd have to move on from him voicing Mario even if they and fans would like to move on and him being the Mario Ambassador is mainly to meet with the fans more and for him to do more voice roles outside of Mario. I feel like the Mario Movie didn't exactly play a part into changing the Mario voice it mainly showed a non Martinet Mario voice can work

    The dictionary defines "ambassador" (in the corporate sense) as: "a person who acts as a representative or promoter of a specified activity." His position as "Mario Ambassador" just means that he's going to keep traveling the world doing the convention circuit/meet and greets, only now Nintendo will be paying him to do so. This way even though he's no longer voicing Mario they can keep him around for advertising/promotion.
    We don't know why he left, but my best guess is that he's getting older and we don't know how much time we have left with him. For context Charles Martinet was born the same year as Kevin Conroy, and we lost Kevin roughly a year ago to cancer.

  • @successanimation
    @successanimation Před 11 měsíci +2

    I make a lot of corporate videos for companies and often work with voice actors. Some of which, have also worked with Nintendo. I know for a fact that it's very cheap to hire Charles Martinet. You can even hire him to do your CZcams intro. I suspect that Charles was severely underpaid all these years. Probably earning less than 250,- for a game. Nintendo is changing because the Switch is a major success, which means they're simply stopping doing things they did it before and they're increasing the budgets drastically.

    Ok, can I just say that I'm pretty sure Martinet didn't have a problem with not voicing his Mario and Luigi in the Mario movie. And I remember hearing about that he wasn't going to be voicing them before we got the release date and the cast of the movie. And I understood why because Mario and Luigi don't talk that much in their games, and I didn't have a problem with the cast of the Sonic movie. And since it's the beginning of a new year, I still do not like the new guy, and did Nintendo stop and think, did we even want a new voice for Mario in the Mario video games? Plus, Nintendo didn't even give a specific reason why Mario needed a new voice in the video games, and I doubt it's because of the new movie or the fact that Charles Martinet is old. Also, I agree that just being the "Mario Ambassador" is Nintendo's way of letting Martinet go, especially if he doesn't know what a Mario Ambassador is, so why would he agree to be it if he doesn't know what it is? Basically, being the Mario Ambassador means he's just doing what he's always been doing when he was still voicing mario. Meeting and greeting people, signing autographs, answering Q&As, he's just doing what he's always done when he's not voice acting. This whole thing is Bullshit! I think if Nintendo is doing this for no specific reason, then we should do something about it #BringbackMartinet!

    Ok, I love Chris Pratt and I'm happy that he got to live out his dream to be Super Mario's voice but this whole thing just seems a teeny bit shady and way out of character for Nintendo. Charles IS getting on in years and I can imagine the concern from Nintendo towards Charles if there is some health related things going on that we don't know about yet. Also reading the comments down below, if it's anything to do with concern for the health of their own employees in the future than I can understand why our dear Mr. Miyamoto went with these decisions. In the workforce when you reach the age of 60+ years in some countries you are entitled to some kind of senior benefit within your job or you are forced to retire with an additional money compensation.

    I dont think there is much of a conspiracy, i think nintendo doesnt want to standardize mario voice anymore and will change the voice based on the individual project. This would be easier by not using charles anymore or every movie coming out with a different voice would cause controversy like it already did. In a way, this does "force retirement" on charles but i dont think it is not intended as a means to screw over Charles, it is just time for nintendo to go a different direction. I think Charles isnt happy about it but he doesnt seem very angry or negative about it either, which might confirm my theory that nintendo said "nothing personal, we just need to do things differently." Charles isn't Mario. Thinking he is, that's the failicy I keep seeing. 25+ years voice acting the same gig is pretty amazing, but that doesnt give him exclusive rights to the character. And the in game voice acting is primarily sound clips, so a majority of gamers wont even notice any difference from this change (heck I wouldnt be surprised if the new sound clips were AI Generated instead of needing to pay a voice actor).
    Charles isn't the original voice of Mario either. He was the first to voice the character in an official Nintendo game, but Mario had a voice outside his games for several years before Charles. Walker Boone, Peter Cullen, Larry Moran, Bob Hoskins, and Lou Albano gave a voice to the character well before Charles.
    I support Nintendo's decision. Thanks for the work Charles, but time to move on to the next chapter.
