- China is the undisputed global green tech leader. It has more solar capacity than all other countries combined. It is also leading the pack in wind power production. Unlike in the western hemisphere, climate change denial is rare in China, and the move to clean energy is an issue of national pride. At the same time, investments in green tech is in the hundreds of billions, and the next breakthrough could be just round the corner.
Yet, China continues to increase the use of coal, incongruous to its green ambitions. It had also threatened a solar trade ban, weaponising its dominance in the field. Why is the green energy revolution in China full of contradictions?

There is no contradiction once you take into account their population size. The only fair way to measure carbon pollution is by per capita measurement. By that measure, China only pollutes half as much as the U.S. The real question is why western countries are such big polluters.
Also need to factor in the fact that China has a production-based economy that produces vast quantities of goods for the World, and the U.S. has a consumption-based economy that consumes goods and energy, so average Americans emit way more C02 for personal use than average Chinese.
Do not forget CNA is one of the media stooges paid by US.
The only fair way to measure is CUMULATIVE, PER CAPITA, AFTER TRANSFER. The West industrialized roughly 100 years before China did, and are responsible for the majority of the carbon released to date. China is a relative newcomer, and has produced far less overall. To restart measurement every year ignores ALL of the historical carbon that the West has released, in effect, rewarding the West for having already polluted the world. In addition, much of China's carbon is consumed by Westerners as imported products - that carbon should be credited back.

1. China is the biggest polluter? China's emission per capita is only a half the emission in western countries. You are saying Chinese don't deserve to use the same amount of energy as westerners?
2. The western countries are the biggest polluter if we count from 200 years ago! The pollution of the earth is not done in one day, or one month or one decade. It's the accumulation of hundreds of years, especially after the industrial revolution in the western world. They had polluted the air for hundreds of years, and made themselves rich, and now when poor countries want to develop too, they accuse you of pollution.
3. The rich western countries moved all of their most polluted factories to poor countries to make products for them to consume, and then they come back to accuse you of pollution. How hypocritical is that!

if you were really cared about the environment, you'd advocate for either Western countries to drop their per capita emissions by half, or cull their populations by half to bring it down to the rest of the worlds levels.

Exactly, and well put! Global Warming heat pollution is due to CUMULATIVE carbon emissions since 1800, not since January 1st, 2023. The West is the primary cause of carbon emissions to date, and should be responsible for it.

China with it's 1.45B people is like a family of 15 persons, while the US only 1/5 of China's population (a family of 3 persons). Aside from it's role providing the world's need of products that also produce waste/pollution, a family of 15 who eats 3 times a day will produce more waste than a family of 3 persons, that is unavoidable. In reality the family of 3 (the US) produces waste almost half of the family of 15(China) and demanding that the family of 15 to eat only once a day in order to reduce it's waste/pollution while the family of 3 can keep eating 6 times a day.
China's population is 4x the US. The big thing you miss is CUMULATIVE carbon emissions because Europe and the US industrialized roughly 100 years prior to China, so they have an additional 100 years of carbon emissions. Furthermore, China has a vast de-desertification / afforestation program that is capturing carbon, adding more than any other country in the world. In your example, the US has a huge mountain of waste in their backyard that keeps growing, while the Chinese family has a small pile of waste that is growing at a smaller rate.

Moreover, all that China produces for the rest of the world... the pollution created via those exports should be added to those nations, for they're the end consumers.
So would the cost - China is not only vastly more efficient than the US at making things, they do so with far slimmer profit margins throughout the supply chain. Actually, the cost would probably triple if the item is a "luxury" or "necessity".
If all the products were made in US China would still be starving and the latest innovation would be a straw made pointy hat. Let's see. @@Sean-giang No, it means that China is much more efficient. The US produces almost no goods, but burns a LOT of carbon due to its automobile-centric lifestyle. Chinese transportation is very heavily electric, so there's much less carbon emitted.

China and the United States released 11.4 and 5.1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2022 respectively. But on a per capita basis, the Americans accounted for 1.8 times more greenhouse gas than their Chinese counterparts.
Another takeaway is that, measured in dollar terms, China accounts for almost 30% of the world manufacturing outputs, or twice as much as that produced by the U.S. And that is achieved on the back of per capita energy consumption being less than half that of the U.S.
Had China not moved towards green and efficient use of energy, what do you think China’s greenhouse gas emission will be like in order to produce 30% of the manufactured goods for the world?

The cumulative installed capacity of wind power accounts for 39.2% of the world's total. I am very Confident that China will fulfill our promise, to be Cabon neutral by 2060. US is the biggest polluter overall. This sort of article should be responsible for giving the right information. China is just the biggest annual emission in recent years. But it will take another 10 years just to match the carbon emission US put in the air in the past. And China is the fastest to clean up it carbon emission as compare to both the UK and US after their industrialization. Yet US is still number 2 in carbon emission despite not doing any manufacturing while China is the world factory with 4 times the population.
Unless you consider the people in China are not human, China emission per capita is way below most industrialized countries including US, Singapore, Israel, Canada, Japan and ranked 40th less per capita than even Falkland. And the number don't even include the carbon emission by US military bases all over the world.
Depends on your source, but in general per capita, China does have a lower CO2 emission, the difference though is the quality. Burning coal releases more pollution than natural gas (Coal produces a lot of ash, particulates, and sulphur by products).
I hope China goes green faster than countries. They should take note and learn from the failures and success of other countries, without stumbling around in the dark. Starting late has its benefits since you can avoid the traps. All the other countries have already invested billions on the research, so they just need to reap the results.
But yes, all countries should try to switch to renewable resources before we turn the earth into a toaster oven. Its not who is worse but how we can all make the world better.

And every renewable energy technology, China is pretty much the leading producer of the world whether it is hydro, wind, solar, thermal and even nuclear. China of course also have HSR and other energy saving transportation.
This is done by China on it own for awhile. You don't develop these technology overnight. And this is done on the background from lack of help from the western technology. And China is doing so without the need to move their pollution elsewhere. You have to remember the west move most of their manufacturing pollution out to developing country but now want to charge a green tax for pollution making stuff for them.

Chinese transportation is electrified mass transit, electric taxis and electric rideshare, supplemented by relatively few private vehicles, and Chinese EVs are now 40% of the market. US transportation is roughly 99% carbon due to gasoline & diesel automobiles dominating. China's energy grid is going renewable very quickly, now roughly 50% renewable by potential capacity, whereas America's energy grid adds renewables much slower.
China is actually leading the advances in next-generation energy. China has High Voltage Transmission technology that nobody else has (to move energy from solar farms in the western desert to the eastern cities), along with wind turbines that are larger and more effective than anyone else. China leads in battery chemistry and production techniques, and also leads in photovoltaic cell technology. Also, China is the only country with a 4th Generation nuclear power plant in operation, is operating a Thorium molten salt reactor, and is constructing a small modular reactor. China is actually doing the big investments and reaping the rewards.

This is planned ahead, pre-building cities and infrastructure that get filled in over time. They don't have extra cost retrofitting around existing people. There is no problem with China being the world's biggest clean energy producer and the biggest polluter, as the trend for China is tilting towards more and more clean energy and less and less pollution. However, we should have issue with the west where the trend is slow to invest in green energy but continues to use fossil fuels, which they have doing in the last 2 centuries polluting our planet.
Great! If China succeed, we won’t need to rely on oil. This will make those countries that produce oil and gas more humble and less arrogant. We will also benefit from having more choices
China will have hit Peak Oil by this time next year. China is electrifying so fast, 40% of all cars sold are plug-in. Their busses and taxis are already electric. Electric tractors and trucks are coming fast! Within 10 years, China's transportation network could be almost entirely electric, so the only oil and gas they use would be for aircraft, large ships, and long distance trucking.

There is no contradiction. Transition takes time. The larger your population, the longer the transition time. China has 1.4 billion people. They can't just suddenly switch off all legacy energy sources. Also the Chinese CO2 emission per capita is about half of their western counterparts. If you add the total CO2 emission of the collective west, the sum is probably higher than China.
China produces goods to meet the needs of wester customers. To reduce the pollution once and for all, we have to call for the west countries to reduce their consumption.
Asian people are the majority of this planet population. They make up 59% that 4.7 billion people. African make about 17%, white make 19%. The rest are made of the other ethnicity. You should be blaming the rest of the asian.

Very informartive but it would have been better if you included China's investment in nuclear power plants to help reduce carbon emmisions and the potential issues nuclear energy can bring. It would also be fair to mention that although China might be the top carbon emiitter by country, it is no where near the top if you look at carbon emmission per capita.

There should not be contradiction. At this moment, wind and solar power are very stable.
