  • China is the undisputed global green tech leader. It has more solar capacity than all other countries combined. It is also leading the pack in wind power production. Unlike in the western hemisphere, climate change denial is rare in China, and the move to clean energy is an issue of national pride. At the same time, investments in green tech is in the hundreds of billions, and the next breakthrough could be just round the corner.
    Yet, China continues to increase the use of coal, incongruous to its green ambitions. It had also threatened a solar trade ban, weaponising its dominance in the field. Why is the green energy revolution in China full of contradictions?

    There is no contradiction once you take into account their population size. The only fair way to measure carbon pollution is by per capita measurement. By that measure, China only pollutes half as much as the U.S. The real question is why western countries are such big polluters.

    • @bpeng2000
      @bpeng2000 Před 5 měsíci +191

      Also need to factor in the fact that China has a production-based economy that produces vast quantities of goods for the World, and the U.S. has a consumption-based economy that consumes goods and energy, so average Americans emit way more C02 for personal use than average Chinese.

      The only fair way to measure is CUMULATIVE, PER CAPITA, AFTER TRANSFER. The West industrialized roughly 100 years before China did, and are responsible for the majority of the carbon released to date. China is a relative newcomer, and has produced far less overall. To restart measurement every year ignores ALL of the historical carbon that the West has released, in effect, rewarding the West for having already polluted the world. In addition, much of China's carbon is consumed by Westerners as imported products - that carbon should be credited back.

    1. China is the biggest polluter? China's emission per capita is only a half the emission in western countries. You are saying Chinese don't deserve to use the same amount of energy as westerners?
    2. The western countries are the biggest polluter if we count from 200 years ago! The pollution of the earth is not done in one day, or one month or one decade. It's the accumulation of hundreds of years, especially after the industrial revolution in the western world. They had polluted the air for hundreds of years, and made themselves rich, and now when poor countries want to develop too, they accuse you of pollution.
    3. The rich western countries moved all of their most polluted factories to poor countries to make products for them to consume, and then they come back to accuse you of pollution. How hypocritical is that!

    China with it's 1.45B people is like a family of 15 persons, while the US only 1/5 of China's population (a family of 3 persons). Aside from it's role providing the world's need of products that also produce waste/pollution, a family of 15 who eats 3 times a day will produce more waste than a family of 3 persons, that is unavoidable. In reality the family of 3 (the US) produces waste almost half of the family of 15(China) and demanding that the family of 15 to eat only once a day in order to reduce it's waste/pollution while the family of 3 can keep eating 6 times a day.

    • @ZweiZwolf

      China's population is 4x the US. The big thing you miss is CUMULATIVE carbon emissions because Europe and the US industrialized roughly 100 years prior to China, so they have an additional 100 years of carbon emissions. Furthermore, China has a vast de-desertification / afforestation program that is capturing carbon, adding more than any other country in the world. In your example, the US has a huge mountain of waste in their backyard that keeps growing, while the Chinese family has a small pile of waste that is growing at a smaller rate.

    China and the United States released 11.4 and 5.1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2022 respectively. But on a per capita basis, the Americans accounted for 1.8 times more greenhouse gas than their Chinese counterparts.
    Another takeaway is that, measured in dollar terms, China accounts for almost 30% of the world manufacturing outputs, or twice as much as that produced by the U.S. And that is achieved on the back of per capita energy consumption being less than half that of the U.S.

And China is the fastest to clean up it carbon emission as compare to both the UK and US after their industrialization. Yet US is still number 2 in carbon emission despite not doing any manufacturing while China is the world factory with 4 times the population.

      Depends on your source, but in general per capita, China does have a lower CO2 emission, the difference though is the quality. Burning coal releases more pollution than natural gas (Coal produces a lot of ash, particulates, and sulphur by products).
      I hope China goes green faster than countries. They should take note and learn from the failures and success of other countries, without stumbling around in the dark. Starting late has its benefits since you can avoid the traps. All the other countries have already invested billions on the research, so they just need to reap the results.

US transportation is roughly 99% carbon due to gasoline & diesel automobiles dominating. "agree on that but the U.S. has had an orchestrated anti-China campaign officially started by the Obama administration in 2011 (less than 2 yrs after China was the largest buyer of U.S. treasury [junk] bonds only next to Japan). Which started due to Xinjiang surpassing the U.S. in cotton and becoming the worlds cotton exporter. The Obama administration needed to come up with an accusation to apply sanctions. So they made up the Uyghur BS. That has since broaden into just about everything China does because the U.S. can no longer compete let alone keep up. So it's been one U.S. accusation after another. The U.S. needs to vilify China at every challenge to keep (threaten/bully/ bribe) US vassal states to stay in line. The reality is there's nothing the U.S. can do to stop China's progress nor the U.S. decline. In the next couple years China will be far enough ahead that the U.S. won't be able to catch or keep up.
      Many U.S. vassal allie states will switch to China for the interest and benefits of their own nations. Same goes for Europe with Russia, starting with Germany who will re-start negotiations to repair and restart the NS pipelines folowed by France. China, Russia along with BRICS will be the new global leaders before the end of this decade."

BRICS is already established and growing (there are over 40 countries wanting to join and another 50 or so who want to be affiliated with it) as it is right now BRICS members include the majority of the worlds energy / minerals / gold nations in its membership. BRICS has surpassed the G7 GDP, BRICS hold the worlds largest oil / mineral reserves required for the future. The U.S. and Europe are in decline and soon will be buried in their own debt with no nations to bail them out (2009).
      The U.S. is crippled to compete in the global 21st century with its outdated, aging, deteriorating infrastructure, a poorly educated unskilled populace still stuck in the 20th century, and thanks to its over-bloated, over-extended, over-costly, aging, hi-maintenance, undermanned out dated military that has eaten up the U.S. economic future, the U.S. is ill-prepared to compete (as is europe).
      Todays China is well prepared for the globalized 21st century (ports, rail, airports, roads, economic structure, global investments (unlike U.S. China build the U.S. destroys, no future in destruction). The primary motivation behind this goal is to eliminate their dependence on coal, oil, and gas imports. China's manufacturing industry is expected to benefit significantly from this transition, as energy costs are anticipated to drop sharply, resulting in improved profit margins. The decision is not only economically sound but also environmentally responsible, as it would reduce pollution levels.

    There should not be contradiction. At this moment, wind and solar power are very stable. The coat power plants should be transitional and suplemental power to ensure power stability and should eventually be partially scraped after 20-30 years. Bear in mind, reaching carbon neutrality is a long journey and does not means no carbon should be procuced at all. It is just that carbon produced is neutralized by more tress planted and other technology such s carbon capturing. etc. to reach carbon neutral.

    per capita, China is way less than west developed countries.
    also the reason we care about carbon emission is because it stays, that's why we should calculate historial accumulate number. it's more fair to developing and poor countries.
    every country experiences industrial process let out more carbon emissions.

    when it comes to the pollution emmission, shall we not only calculate the total volume, but also shall we take the pollution per capita, on that case, european and americans emisse more times than that of chinese.

    The contradiction is not surprising given its size. China well on the way to transition away from fossil fuels. Obviously, before wind and solar became economically viable, thanks very much to China's efforts, fossil fuels overwhelmingly dominated. OVERWHELMINGLYLY. That capacity cannot just be shuttered overnight. It's a gradual process that will take decades...

    Green energy is just a new phenomenon that nearly every developing and developed countries are trying to harness them. Within them China takes the lead and no one comes close. Still it doesn’t solve all the energy consumption issue therefore coal and others are still needed. One has to address the whole issue not nit picking on a piece to find problems.

    Is there separate waste collection in China?

    • @user-ub4pb6eu6i
      @user-ub4pb6eu6i Před 5 měsíci +1

      Garbage sorting is not practiced in most places in China, and even if there are garbage sorting bins, garbage pickup trucks will mix them all into one vehicle. But there will be many people who leave valuable items (plastic bottles, cartons, cans) and sell them. When you take your trash outside your home, there are retired people who come to recycle bottles, paper boxes, and metal cans and sell them for money. There are people on the street who pay to recycle what they can. When the waste is transferred to the disposal station, some of the disposal stations will have employees to sift through the waste and screen out the valuable things in it.
