Canon R5 and Z CAM E2-F6 Compared: RAW, Low Light, Codecs

  • The Canon R5 is a new hybrid stills and video camera with some impressive video specs. The Z CAM E2-F6 is a cinema camera first and foremost. You might not think these two cameras are very comparable, but my findings might prove otherwise.
    I put the Canon's 8K raw up against the Z CAM's ProRes RAW. I test low light with both raw and H.265 (interesting results). I give my likes and dislikes of the two cameras and show lots of footage.
    I was wrong about the playback of the Canon 8k raw on my iMac. While it does playback better than the H.265, I'm only getting around 12 fps. This could be a combination of CPU/GPU performance and also hard drive speed. The 8K Canon RAW footage has a high data rate and some spinning disc hard drives aren't fast enough to deliver the footage in realtime. SSD's and 7200 RPM drives are recommended.
    A viewer commented that if you change the Resolve decode quality to "Full res - Canon" it will enable the Color Space, Gamma, and ISO controls for Canon RAW. This is excellent! Unfortunately it's not obvious and the manual doesn't reveal it.

    Hey man. I don’t know if someone told you this but you can enable the iso and the gamma and color science in Davinci Resolve regarding the R5. You just need to change the decode quality to Full Res-Canon and then you gain access to all the controls.

    ❇️ *Some updates* : Resolve's RAW settings can be changed to allow setting the colorspace, gamma, and ISO on the Canon RAW footage. Thanks to James Jackson Films for pointing that out.
    ❇️ Canon RAW can be output in Canon Log 2 or 3 since it is raw. The H.265 can now be output in Canon Log 3 with a firmware update.
    ❇️ There are LUTs available on Canon's website, but they are hard to find. You can download them here: ninja.click/canon_luts

    Both the graded footage look amazing man. Awesome editing and all. So your workflow on the zcam is prores raw and not zraw? Hopefully someday they make their own codec much better for in camera options.

      I would try ZRAW if it had better support in software. I think Premiere can edit it now on OS X, but that’s not my favorite editing software. Scratch supports it on Windows, but not Mac. There’s also a question of what the codec is. Z CAM doesn’t provide any details other than to say it’s 12 bit.

    Thanks for the video. Interesting to see that both them of look really good. I guess when panning the Z cam vill be much smoother from frame to frame, doesn't it? I'm foremost a photographer and use Canon and will get the R5 as the next camera. It seems very usable as a hybrid especially now when Apple have released the M1 chips in their new Macs that can handle H265. I photograph a lot of buildings and landscapes and I have 4 TS-E lenses incl. FD TS 35mm converted to EF just as you have. I haven't seen anyone else done that but that's a pretty good lens. You have them on both of your cams, how do you use them as video lenses? Any special reason you prefer them as video/film-lenses?

      @@FlannelNinjaTech Thanks for your reply. Ok, good to hear. Well, I was just thinking that the sensor readout could be faster on a dedicated cine cam and therefore panning could be smoother. I find mirrorless not being so smooth when panning.

    What lens is used at 9:28? Great comparison. I was just looking at a friend's Z Cam 4k and it looks very versatile and well built. I have an EOS R which meets my photo needs so now I'm trying to decide my next purchase. The R5, R3 or the 8k Z Cam. Video is still very new to me but that might give me much more future proofing for video.

      That shot was the Aivascope 1.5x anamorphic adapter with the Helios 44-2 as a taking lens. It’s not a very common setup.
      Those are all great cameras. It really depends on whether you need autofocus since the Z CAM doesn’t even compare to Canon in that area. Otherwise Z CAM has great color, more professional features, and will never overheat 😄

      @@FlannelNinjaTech thanks for the info. I was thinking that was the Helios lens due to the bokeh. I just recently picked one up myself and trying to learn how to manual focus for both stills and video. Luckily the R never overheats but I do have a Ninja V that I record into. Looking forward to more videos.

    As you have so much experience working with zcam f6 you know it's limit and how much it can be pushed to get the best image quality . my question is now s1h now can record in BRAW kind of full frame bmpcc 6k .
    Which camera have the best image quality S1h , fx3 and Scan e2 f6

    • @FlannelNinjaTech
      @FlannelNinjaTech  Před 3 lety

      As far as I know, the S1H and F6 use the same Sony sensor. With proper white balance and exposure you really shouldn’t see much of a difference between them. Braw might offer better white balance control for those shots that are way off. In the current implementation, there is no highlight recovery option with the S1H braw.
      If you record PRR from the F6 that should technically be better than braw since it’s raw vs not actually raw. Still, with proper exposure this is really splitting hairs. There are more important factors like file size and NLE compatibility.

    R5 8k raw can be set to 16:9 full sensor also not only 17:9

    • @FlannelNinjaTech
      @FlannelNinjaTech  Před 3 lety +2

      The 16:9 mode isn't full sensor. It's just a crop of the 17:9 area: 8192×4320 (17:9) vs 7680×4320 (16:9). The full pixel dimensions of R5 sensor is 8192×5464 (3:2).
