Batman (NES Beta) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A complete playthrough of a beta version of Sunsoft's 1990 NES game, Batman: The Video Game.
The cutscenes are all quite different from those that appeared in the final release version, the ending is totally different (Joker isn't the last boss here - he's taken care of in a cutscene!). The only other significant difference I noticed was in the powerup drops. Some enemies that regularly dropped power ups in the release version don't ever seem to in this one, and it's far stingier with health and ammo perk drops. If you're a fan of the original, this will probably be right up your alley.

"Vicky's in Gotham City."
"Thanks, punk. That REALLY narrowed it down."
"Gotham City? It rings a bell."

25:19 Who knew that The Joker was Bobby Hill all along?
That boy just ain't right, I tell you....
I wish they kept the cutscenes.
It'd be neat if one could take some of the better cutscene stuff and add it to the released game and then have the best of both worlds.
Joker looks pretty ugly in some of these, and the opening cutscene where he chases down the punk is just stupid, but a lot of the other ones are mostly just nice transitions.
7r$
@Ruby Williams How is it not stupid? Why would a completely random street punk have the knowledge Batman is looking for, and why didn't he slap the punk in the face when he was given such a ridiculously useless answer as he was?
This must be the version Nintendo Power got a hold of for one of their preview articles, because I remember some of those cut scenes being in the magazine, and then wondering why the game was different.
Yeah, I definitely remember that issue of Nintendo Power. I was always intrigued by the fact that we never got the version that was seen in that issue. This was very, very fun to watch!
What a hell of a game. I spent forever to finish this one when I was a kid. Really tight gameplay and controls. The music (what a soundtrack !!) and graphics in Batman were so amazing that they still feel great in 2018 and better than most attempts some indies are making at developing "retro" 2D platformers on Steam. There were some serious coders at Sunsoft. And their Batman for Gameboy is very different but really excellent too. With many new gameplay ideas like those rotating bats shielding you. Good old times.
yes, of all the nes games, I think this Batman is the game with best art, best music, just simply pure art, developers poured their hearts and souls into this one and as I kid I was lucky I got my hands on mostly all the best nes games.
I rechecked few times on youtube all the nes games and pretty much concluded that I didn't miss much, I was lucky and got my hands on the most beatiful games of nes era.
This is awesome! As well as answering some questions I had as a kid about one of my favourite NES titles.
Observations:
- FINALLY I know why Stage 1-1 has those ledges randomly close to the end of the stage. They have always bugged me. I figured it was just for players to practice their climbimg (which I suppose they are).
- Damn, Joker got beat with the ugly stick even more.
- The tank-like enemies on Stage 3-2 move really fast now. As if they weren't difficult enough.
- Life doesn't refill fully after level completion (it always did, right?).
- No pause/score?
- Now I know why the boss before the Joker in the retail version seemed so out of place, seeing as he was supposed to be the original final boss. I'm glad they left him in.
- The beta ending is just as awesome as the retail ending. I like the flying teeth.
- None of the stage music was changed as it was surely forged by the hands of the gods themselves.
Thanks for the great playthrough!
No problem :) I was surprised by the number of differences beyond the cinematics, but I think I prefer the retail version of it. At least without the Joker the ending is MUCH easier in this one. I spent so long as a kid playing this - I played it like everyday after school in the second grade, flip flopping between it and Ninja Gaiden. :) Good memories
good
The cutscenes better explain why Batman is going from location to location.
@@NintendoComplete There's definitely some similarities between Ninja Gaiden and Batman. Two of my favorite games to this day!
Cool beta. My bet is they decided it was fair that Joker be the last boss so they made him the last boss in the final boss.
Remember kids, Batman doesn't punch his enemies, he Batmans them.
Yeah, I really liked the cut scenes, even though they weren't as fancy as the released games' ones.
I love the Joker as the boss, it this is so much more reasonable at the end game
Games by Warner Bros. back then were done by Sunsoft instead of Warner Bros. Interactive since that company didn't exist at that time. It existed after Midway went bankrupt in 2010.
Well, this better explains Batman jumping down from the platform at the beginning of the game! Also, I think that it's funny that the guy in the first cut scene tells Batman that Vicki is in Gotham City. Aren't they already in Gotham? Why does Batman act as if he's never heard of Gotham? Anyway, this was really, really fun to watch. I really enjoyed finally seeing this version of one of my favorite video games.
Did you say.... Gotham City?
Did you say.... Axis Chemical Factory?
Batman has some serious ADD in this one.
@@raphaelturtle4146 Metal Gear?
Thank you for this! I never knew this existed. I enjoyed the cutscenes and would love to see a spliced version of this and the released one. Joker definitely needed to be the final boss.
"Could someone tell me what kind of a world we live in where a six foot bat steals all my press?"
This explains to me at the end why Joker was massive in comparison to Batman in the final version. I always why he was a beast next to Batman. I'm surprised they dumped so much animation work, most of it should have stayed. Also cool that the scenes in the Beta seem to be inspired by Killing Joke. Batman holding the guy is pretty similar to Batman at the Asylum in the book.
Who would have thought a Batman game exists with a cutscene of Batman punching the Joker but at no point do u play as Batman fighting the Joker? I wonder what AVGN would say about this.
Then again this is the beta version and not the released version of the game.
24:18 Wow, Bob the Goon sure looks different. Seriously though, I love the artistic license taken in this game. One of my favorite games for the NES, frustrating as it could be. The beta version is interesting, because I remember at the time seeing early screenshots in Nintendo Power featuring some of the missing cutscene images and wondering what happened to them. Also not being able to fight the Joker seems like it'd be a huge letdown.
I'll never not be amazed at the amazing sound, music, and graphics of this game, the presentation is just incredible, and all on an 8-bit machine.
Seems the gameplay wasn't changed too much from the final version, the cutscenes were mostly an improvement in the finished version I think.
Good playing btw, that section with the threadmill platforming always busts my balls.
I wish I had a copy of this version.
One of my favourite
NES game for all time👍👍👍👍 thanks for making this game
Especially with the cutscenes this game reminds a lot of Ninja Gaiden.
0:56 green al gore
Love the music of Level 1.
Why is the Beta more complete than the final version?
Awesome never seen this version just downloaded the rom
one of the best game EVER
Literally just played and beat this two nights ago for the first time ever. The WHOLE game makes WAY more sense with these cutscenes. Never understood why they even SHOW Vicki Vale in the attract mode screens when she wasn’t even in the game! But in this version, she was! Not sure what the space limitations were, but they really shouldn’t have removed so many story crucial cutscenes.
Oh and Batman essentially murdering Joker in the retail release was very out of character. No such thing here!
Good call on making the Joker the final boss though for this instead of the kind of lame "Oh no it's you!" they should've taken the line from the movie "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses would you?" I still don't know why they took out the other cutscenes though.
Kinda cool they used actual comic art
Purple Batman!
I feel like they changed the cutscenes because they were asked to do so either by DC Comics or Warner Bros, otherwise I dont see why they would have scrapped them. The rest of the game is almost identical to the final release.
I feel they are kind of pointless and do more to disrupt the flow of a solid game than add much to the story. Ninja Gaiden this ain’t!
Not entirely. Joker, the final boss, is absent in this version. That and the ending also is a bit different, with batman just punching him.
It was probably that they were doing a looser, more comic-based games and DC/Warner stepped in and said 'Make it more like the movie.'
Men they should leave this one instead of the copy is around. Way better all those cut scene.
these cut scenes fit better
Kinda. They also interrupt the flow more and add very little. Some of the dialogue exchanges are pointless. But I like seeing them after all these years just the same!
Impressive! I have the beta rom but haven't played it yet. I should give it a try. Still awesome skills you have. batman is a tough cookie of a game indeed.
Thanks, it is a really cool version, though I still prefer the original :) and you aren't kidding with the difficulty. I didn't think I'd finish without dying in the last fight until I realized that you don't fight the Joker.
LOL @ this version just ending with joker getting punched & no boss fight
24:28
Firebug: OOOOH, LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!
Much better beta version
no ita better the final version for the battle with the joker and the ending
Gotham City? But Batman you were born in Gotham. So glad they fixed that lol
Beta Is Better than original
Huh. I never knew this even existed. Interesting differences between the Beta & the Retail release.
true me too i have it the original when i was kid now for first time i see this too i never know it this existed too is rly cool
now first cutscene fits with the jump and free fall from released game
I wonder How did you get the beta to play
intresting they went with the more European/ London verison of The Batman and Joker Story line expecially the last end boss. The cut scences were nice though. Still glad they re worked it so that way you fought The Joker at the End.
Sunsoft wasn't alowed to use this look from the comics since Sunsoft only had the rights for the Batman movie and not the comic.
That's why these scenes were changed.
Could you image if batman was put in castlevanina game.
Damn this is a different game bet it's still hard as shit though I knew it can't be impossible I just didn't have the time and patience for it.
24:15 Firebug.
Why did they cut these cutscenes out?
It works better with Joker as a boss but this conclusion is still quite amusing to me and a vast improvement over other underwhelming video game endings. I wish NES Metal Gear had ended with a still of Solid Snake demolishing the title character in one punch.
when i was kid i have this game but the original now first time i see this game have it beta lol :D amazing :D and she looks so diffrend but her cutscenes are more good cool i like it :D
I never knew NES games had their own Beta Versions
Especially ones this good
true me 2 i have it the final original game on nes when i was super small kid but i never knew it that too they hav it beta thats so cool
@@devill2312 Now I'm curios to know if alpha builds exist for NES games as they do for modern games.
was this one of the games to utilize the updated sound chip?
bassx101 Nope, Sunsoft was just awesome at abusing the NES hardware
They used DPCM samples for the drums.
Mr. NintendoComplete do you know about a game with this chip improvement?
Yup they used special chips to enhance the sound. I remember opening up Batman Return of the Joker one time because it felt slightly heavier and sure enough it had a Sunsoft branded chip inside.
@@BryanX64 No, that's just a Sunsoft FME-7 mapper chip. It has no audio capabilities (that would be the otherwise identical 5B) and the NES wouldn't be able to use them even if it did, because the cartridge slot doesn't have audio enhancement pins like the Famicom does.
Those pins do exist in the NES, but for some reason they're all the way down at the bottom in an unused expansion port. The only reason Return of the Joker sounds like it might have enhanced audio is because of the bass samples Sunsoft started using for their later NES releases. It's still just running on stock sound hardware though.
What the fuck did this game have to do with Batman. It's like they've made some random game, and it's an ok game, and then thought, how can we give it broader appeal... I know... We'll add some Batman skins. Fucking hated that about the NES era.
What's nes beta?
A beta is a product that's mostly finished but still being tweaked. This isn't the version that was sold in stores.
@@NintendoComplete wow that makes sense right there thanks pal
